While I understand the need for those who have lost loved ones need time to grieve, doing on the side of the road where it happened is "not" the place to do it. I'm sorry to say that roadside memorials are distractions to other motorists that may be unaware of what happened, and look thereby taking their eyes off the road which could cause yet "another" accident. It's unfortunate that these people lost their lives and others were injured, but let's be honest. They were there as spectators to an illegal drag race on a public highway. If they had been at home like normal law abidding citizens, they'd be alive today.

All of them older than 20 but without the good sense they were born with! It's a shame the families now have to bear this due to their stupidity. Not to mention the poor tractor trailer driver just trying to make a living. There are many more victims than those killed at the time.

I can't believe these people want justice. Why were they participating in an illegal activity to begin with? If these people were not doing something illegal, this would not have happened to begin with. It's always someone else fault when something goes wrong. These people that were attending this drag racing needs to take the blame themselves. Leave this kid alone that hit them. If they weren't in the middle of the road, they wouldn't have gotten hit. We need to move on to more important news.

I'm glad they're dead. "People" who love street racing also love extreme speeding when they are behind the wheel and that makes them same as a terrorist.

"Somebody's got to pay," said victim Mark Courtney's brother Wayne. "He's got to pay for what he's done. He's taken life." ==========
Where do these ignorant people come from?? This guy needs to fvck off and blame his idiot brother for running out onto the middle of a major highway @ 3am to watch an illegal drag race.

Yes, this WAS a tragedy on all counts. But, realistically speaking - even if the driver of the Crown Vic was going at a normal rate of speed, how in the world was he supposed to know ahead of time when he was driving on a fairly isolated road in the wee hours that there'd be a crowd of people in front of him? I doubt that any one of us could've reacted quickly enough to avoid hitting the people in the roadway. And to tell the truth, I'm getting extremely tired of hearing that the "real truth" of this story hasn't come out, ESPECIALLY when the police are having such a difficult time getting any of the spectators to talk to them about what happened! Supposedly people aren't talking because they're scared that they will be charged with illegal activity. Well, maybe it's just my way of thinking, but if someone I loved had been killed and I knew what had really happened, I'd be willing to talk to the police, the FBI, ANYONE, regardless if I went to jail for the rest of my life or not. But of course, that's just me...

If any body should see a penalty it is every one who was out there that night watching the race. Blaming Bullock is not the answer every one out there that night took a chance and every one out there should face the penalty.
It should be those people and the two racers should face jail time not Bullock.

While it is a tragedy these 8 people were killed, they bear the responsibility for their OWN death. 1st of all, they were standing in the middle of a highway in the dark of night! They were attending an ILLEGAL STREET RACE.
Yes these deaths could have been prevented if all those involved weren't breaking the law in the 1st place. PERSONAL RESPONSIBILITY!

For those people who say that the driver of the Crown Vic needs to be punished, I say that is true also. Give him a ticket for driving with a suspended license. His punishmnet is living with the fact that every day he has to see bodies flying off the hood of his car when he closes his eyes. These people where participating in an illagal act of street racing, standing in the middle of a major highway, in the darkness of the night and could have chosen either not to be there or to call the cops to stop it, they did neither. Now they want justice done, come on people wake up and take some responsibility for your own actions.

I read a statement by one of the victims family members stating that someone should pay. Unfortunately 8 people did pay with the cost of their lives. If the date of this accident was January 22, a day before Bullock's license was suspended that would not have changed the fact that adults that should have had better common sense decided to be spectators in an illegal event. Bullock should not have been driving because he was breaking the law as well but if it wasn't him it could have been someone else. The victims aren't just the 8 people that died its also Bullock who is now mentally traumatized. Honestly they are responsible for their own deaths.

Glad I'm not the only one who thinks that the driver of the Vic shouldn't be punished. These stupid idiots were standing in the middle of a highway! Not to mention, the safeway truck also ran over a body and dragged it a while. If the Vic didn't hit them, the safeway 18-wheeler surely was going to!

“Somebody's got to pay," said victim Mark Courtney's brother Wayne. "He's got to pay for what he's done. He's taken life." I understand that this man is grieving and I am truly very sorry for his loss. I have never lost anyone very close to me so I won’t pretend that I know how he’s feeling. I’m not mad at him for having the point of view he has currently but I do hope that with time he will be able to see the situation for what it is. Your brother was standing in the middle of a public highway in the dark of night. He is responsible for his own death. Based on the evidence that has been released so far (and my opinion could change as more is released) I don’t think that Mr. Bullock is at fault for the deaths that occurred. No, he should not have been driving with a suspended license but even if he had a valid license the events that night still would have happened. If not Mr. Bullock, then someone else would have come along and struck the victims. I do think he should be given a ticket/fine/jail time, whatever law enforcement deems appropriate, for any moving violations he committed but no more and no less. I’m sure that the fact that he should not have been driving in the first place that night is adding to his grief. I know how Darren Bullock and his family must be feeling. A relative of mine hit 2 pedestrians about 3 years ago who were wearing dark clothing and outside of the cross walk on a poorly lit road. One of the boys was in the ICU for 2 weeks. My entire family prayed every night that the boy would pull through. And my relative, who was in college at the time, became so depressed that he dropped out of school for a semester. He has since overcome his depression and is doing great but it was not an easy thing to go through. By the grace of God, the boy survived and has no lasting injuries at all from the accident. After an investigation, my relative was not charged by the police because they determined he was not speeding or under the influence of any substance. The case was closed and ruled pedestrian error. Yes, its true that pedestrians have the right of way and this rule makes perfect sense. I agree with it whole heartedly. But no one in their right mind wakes up, gets in their car and consciously decides to look for people to run over that day. If a driver is able to stop, they stop. It’s an automatic reflex to slam on your breaks if you see a collision about to occur. What we all must keep in mind is that there is so much a driver has to pay attention to while driving. The traffic pattern, the cars immediately around you, your speed, stop signs, traffic lights the list goes on and on. And let us not forget the fact that vehicles CANNOT stop on a dime. Because of these elements pedestrians MUST understand that they are the ones mainly responsible for their own safety in spite of the fact that they have the right of way. In addition, I have a cousin who is a lawyer and he informed me that when a pedestrian is hit, in most states a driver only have to prove by 2-3% that the pedestrian is at fault and simply being outside of a cross walk is usually enough to cover it. I work in downtown Bethesda so I see pedestrians make bad decisions everyday. I see people jay walking without ever checking for cars and walking out into the street from between parked cars where it’s impossible for a driver to see them. And when pedestrians do use the cross walks a lot of them use them improperly by walking before they have been signaled to do so. Even when you have the signal you should still make sure traffic has stopped because unfortunately drivers run stop lights or stop their cars beyond the stop line and in the cross walk itself all the time. The best part is when pedestrians get mad at drivers for their poor decisions. I’ve seen people scream and yell at drivers and flick them off. I myself even had a man slam his fist down on the trunk on my car. Pedestrians just simply need to be more vigilant.

I am sorry for all of the people who lost life that day but they cannot blame this man for the tragedy. If they were not in the MIDDLE of 210 a dangerous road as it is they would not have been hit. This is ridiculous to blame this young man. anyone riding through there would have hit them. They should take responsibilty for their being at an ILLEGAL race and standing in the middle of the road! Common sense would tell you not to stand in the street...especially 210 in the pitch dark in a smoke cloud!
