You think Aberdeen is a craphole?
You must not be a outdoors men. We have the beaches, for fishing boating, hiking camping kite flying clam digging, sunset gazing, storm watching, surfing, crabbing, biking and much more. Then we have the Olympic Mt's for game hunting, hiking and camping in the rainforest and old growth timber, bird watching, snow boarding, Quad trails, freshest rivers in the Northwest for swimming, boating and fishing, we also have lots of wild edibles to harvest year around. plus a category 4 Whitewater Kayaking river and I could burn up the page with an endless number of thing to do around Aberdeen. My model is "get high on life not drugs" Lets not forget that wonderful freshly scrubbed jetstream air off the ocean.
Breath in deep-------awe its Aberdeen.
I agree - great things - except the Kayaking thing. Wish you guys in the little banana boats would learn to be more courteous to us guys on the banks with the fishing rods.

But that is another thread...

In answer to Jim Garant, your brother was allegedly bullied in the 50s, and some fifty years later you hate the people of Aberdeen, grow up. Name the school, if your story is true.
I was born in Aberdeen Scotland and its not the hell hole being portrayed on here, the claims of druggies going mad on Union Street is utter tripe.
The place isn't perfect but its a damn sight better than many.

Yes Aberdeen is a dump. One pass thru the vibrant downtown core is evidence enough. The mayor is a joke, the cops are slack, the bums own downtown....just the great place to raise kids.
Meth adicts everywhere you go......sewer is the only word I can use to describe this place.
I drove thru downtown recenty to see every kind of miscreant known to mankind wandering the streets , hassling people for money, chasing good customers away from businesses......yep a real stand up place!!
Descendants of whores, loggers and fisherman.....class A place!!
The city of fools running it.....a city attorney that has not got a clue, inspectors on the take..hear that Matt?
Rampant news of business deveopment lady bedding down local idiot wannabe developer....john and Lisa
Is this all rumor or is this why this town doesn't go anywhere?
And lets not forget the city council that does NOTHING. Or the windbag glad handing Mayor.
Nope......some one said it...doing anything in Aberdeen is like putting lipstick on a pig. Right n spot.

i lived in aberdeen for many years and my sister, mother, grandparents, and a whole bunch of my family still live there. my dad would except he was sent to prison for drugs, but he did used to live there--under the bridge. my mom is an ex drug addict. my uncle is an addict. my sister, etc. growing up everyone of my friends parents were drug addicts and the mothers were prostitutes. a kid we used to take care of and called my brother used to live there but he was sent to prison for murder, although i never heard of a whole lot of murders growing up. when i lived there, only two kinds of people existed: people who owned businesses and the people who worked them. The well-off and the poor. the well-off lived a life where they didnt see a whole lot of the bad side of aberdeen and the rest of us were too ignorant to realize that it was considered bad. Small town mentality. i was the only one i know of to have escaped Aberdeen and it's dark ways. i now live in vancouver, i have no and never have had any addictions, i am a store manager, i have a family, 4 vehicles and my husband owns a business. i thank god every day for what i have now. myself and my siblings were placed in foster homes just like several other kids i knew. our drug addict parents would leave us for days at a time while they went off getting high. my parents had a total of 8 kids. they didnt raise any of us past the age of 15 and most of us never got that far. we were in and out of shelters (my dad and brothers had to stay in the mission in between the wishkah and south shore bridges). i ate at the same table as a man (we called him the watch shiner, but his name was vincent) who would time how long it would take him to pull a razor out of his brief case, take his shoes off, shave the bottoms of his feet, put his shoes back on, tie them, and then put his razor back in his brief case. that's only one of my favorite aberdeen loones. you cant tell me aberdeen is wonderful because i grew up there. i still cringe when i go back to visit my family.
"UNDER THE BRIDGE"?? I guess you are a Cobain fan? BTW, he didn't live "under the bridge" either!
If your entire family are drug addicts and you used to eat dinner with a nut who shaves his feet, then GOOD THING YOU MOVED. WE DON'T NEED PEOPLE LIKE YOU HERE.
GO LIVE IN TACOMA!

Hi there - I appreciated your thoughtful comments, but I do have a question that I hope you or others can help me come to terms with (I am considering rehabing a (once) beautiful old home in aberdeen).
There seems to be a population of registered sex offenders in aberdeen that grossly outpaces the national averages...it's something like 370:1 - which is crazy high.
Why is this the case? Is there some kind of half-way house located in the city? Have any of you who live in Aberdeen had any issues with the relatively high number of sex offenders who reside there.
Again, I'm not trying to be critical - I love the old homes in the Aberdeen/Hoquiam area, and am considering purchasing there. But, as a man with a family, I'm struggling with the fact that so many registered offenders make their homes there.
With respect to drugs; whatever. Drugs are everywhere, and I personally don't care about what responsible users do with their time. Street-carpet junkies and white-trash iceheads are another story, of course, but I haven't seen any more of them during my visits to Aberdeen than in Seattle, Everett or Tacoma.
I understand your concern, but have to say according to the Megan's Law website, 90% of the time, the child KNOWS the person who molests them! Simply having someone registered doesn't stop unregistered people from molesting children, right? I have searched the sites also, to check out areas, and found 48 registered offenders in Aberdeen. With a population of somewhere around 16,000 I would not say that is an especially alarming number.

One particular website, showed me the entire city of Seattle only had SEVEN registered sex offenders! So...I would not really put all my faith in who is registered and who is not.

Aberdeen is a SLUM. Full of drug addicts and criminals. The slum-lords perpetuate the problem.
The mayor is a real P.O.S. They can't even afford to have this incompetant woman work full time. The police look twice at anybody walking the streets day or night because most likely they are about to commit a crime.(At least they do their job)! Otherwise it would be as bad as Bagdad.
The place even looks like a slum! UGH!!!
As for the "Slum", maybe YOU live in a slum! I live in Aberdeen, and my neighborhood is FAR from a slum! I bet if you lived in TACOMA, you'd live in a SLUM too!

I wish these people who make these comments would actually get off the 101 on their way through town, and really look around a bit. YOu can really tell many of them are either teenage Kurt Cobain fans, or fools who drove through on their way to the beach, once, 5 years ago in the dark.

Mike, Most of these respondents are under 30 and think Cobain was the only "rock star".

They only see the darkness because that's what they want.

I have lived all over the Puget Sound area and now I live here, by choice! I like the small town feel with all the services I need.

If "somewhere else is greener",........GO!

I like it here.......

Uhhh, no MikeM, I am a life long Aberdeen resident that has been reading these posts. Oh and by the way, I am no Kurt Cobain fan either. The fella that has put up the Kurt Cobain Memorial site near the North Aberdeen bridge, is simply attempting to find an excuse to shore up his house on the river to keep the flooding at bay. Ya know, calling something 'HISTORICAL' goes a long way with the City Leaders, what a joke. Trust me, you obviously have had no run=ins with these so called City and County Leaders. Sorry to say, but I have to agree with too many of these posts. Unfortunately, there are many posts that are negative, but true. You simply have no idea how sad this Community has become. Oh and I might add, Kurt Cobain did not live under that so called bridge, as so many tourists are led to believe.

I think we should get rid of mentally unstable people who threatens people!

aberdeen is my home town, and there is nothing wrong with the place apart from the fact that we are now home to thousands of foreigners. If anyone has anything bad to say then blame the coverment for letting so many people into our city to live when we can hardly find housing and beniffits for our own,if the city seems to be in illrepute due to over crowding and badly run councils, then so be it, but if you have visited our lovely city with so much history to its name and you dont like it then you wont mind not coming back..
thanks anyway for your visit and remember its nice to be nice.....

I've been thinking of moving to Aberdeen. I've been researching it for several weeks. Today I read about 90% of the comments in this thread and a much better picture is starting to unfold.

#1 It's a gorgeous, historic location - at least to me.

#2 There seem to be very distinct boundaries between poor, middle and upper class. Economic, social, political, geographic, etc.

#3 There are distinctly different experiences among the people posting in this forum, depending on who you are and your personal experiences in the town.

So, maybe some of you good folks can answer some of my questions about Aberdeen.

Where in the city is it reasonably safe to live without the worry of being mugged or burgularized?

Since there are problems with drugs, sex offenders, etc, I would really appreciate knowing. I'm on a fixed income.

Right now I am looking online at some nice little homes for sale. Nothing fancy. I am hoping to find an average, older home in a nice neighborhood. I haven't got a clue, except to stay away from the southern part of town. Above Aberdeen Ave? Above Sumner? Not sure...

For now I am looking online until I can actually come to Aberdeen and take a look.

I could use a realtor, but they always want to sell to you. I'd much rather ask the locals because, lets face it. They know about the town.

I found some houses in the 2100 block of West 5th Street and thought that might be good.

I am looking around Cherry Street, trying to stay west of North Division, etc. Is that a good idea?

Eventhough there are some cute places in the 700 block of West 4th Street and the 700 block of East 2nd Street, I don't know how safe the neighborhoods are.

One in the 600 block of East 1st Street is really cool. But is it in a bad area?

Also, if anyone knows about the Hoquiam area from West Chenault on up and around to Lincoln Park, will you let me know about that area too?

Thank you. Maybe this info will help other people who are looking to move there.

And by the way, Hello Scotland. Maybe you can start a new thread of your own, "Aberdeen SCOTLAND is a very dangerous place to live and raise a family".

I'm just sayin...

Daily Horoscope for December 16

Capricorn

Today's New Moon urges you to get to grips with something that's been weighing on your conscience recently. Do something about it, dear Goats, preferably before Christmas Day. Think how much better you'll feel when you've finally faced up and taken some concrete action over it. You'll wonder why you waited so long before doing something about it.
