This story is so long overdue, not that I'm complaining now, so glad to finally see it here.
Regan Martin, Cherry Simpson, Susan Murphy Milano...you are changing our world! Because of you so many targets of Domestic Violence are now able to face tomorrow with much more hope...thank you for your voices, examples and vision of a safer, better world ahead.

Susan Murphy Milano, a Chicago resident, played such a huge part in the escape of Regan Martin from her vile abuser.

I highly recommend her books and resources to any crime victim, most notedly of domestic violence, her words saved my life...I know they could/will/and do save many more lives as well...

The best way to give a voice to the TRUE victims of Domestic Violence is to not allow the Extremist Father's Rights Groups to divert our attention from the beauty of this story and the hope it brings...let's Press On!

Susan Murphy-Milano

Susan Murphy-Milano, the victim's advocate
Susan Murphy-Milano is a respected author, nationally recognized relationship safety expert, tireless advocate for battered women and children. In January of 1989, Susan's father, a Chicago Violent Crimes Detective, murdered her mother and then took his own life. Susan's quest for justice has been trumpeted across the pages of newspapers, magazines, radio and television, including: The Oprah Winfrey Show, Larry King Radio, ABC's 20/20, CBS 48 Hours, Nightline, CNN, Sunday Today Show Profile, Women's Day, Family Circle Magazine, U.S. News and World Report among others. Expertise: In 1993, she was instrumental in the passage of the Illinois stalking law and has constantly argued for the rights of battered women and children, both through legislation and through national television appearances and print media. And as National Executive Director of Project:Protect, Susan directed crime scene investigation, safety and successful prosecutions of numerous high profile cases.

Author of "Defending Our Lives" Doubleday books and "Moving Out Moving On" when a relationship goes wrong. Susan’s life story,“Murphy’s Daughter,” is currently under option by Lionsgate Films and is set for a 2011 release. She is also featured on an upcoming “E True Hollywood Story.” Susan is Co-host of War on Crime Radio and is also a member of Women In Crime Ink.

Nice try. We aren't 'extremists'. We're parents. Good parents. Parents who for no other reason besides our gender lost our right to be a parent.

I won't bother asking you to get the facts, because you have an agenda, and your mind is made up.

But for everyone else, please make the effort to learn about domestic violence from someplace OTHER than a feminist advocacy group.

Read the work done by Professors Richard Gelles, Murray Straus, and Suzanne Steinmetz. The truth, as they say, is out there. Go find it.

The Regular Guy did not read the facts. The story talks about a woman & the abuse she suffered. The abuser is a convicted felon. I get it you must be related to this person. As someone said on this site this isn't about you or fathers rights. It it is about an obsessive, dangerous abuser, turned felon. He also can't vote in any election or own a firearm.

Message below was posted on http://peace4missing.ning.com/ by Cherry, the Mother of Regan Martin.

Today is my birthday. My greatest gift are my children and grandchildren. I can not look at their faces without also seeing one other face "Susan Murphy-Milano" she has tirelessly helped me and my daughter for almost a year. The Chicago Tribune, the video, are all here because of Susan. More than that, the whole 13 charges, the GPS monitor, the Harvard Law students now trying to help, these are all because of Susan. While I am thankful for the article I am upset they did not put Susan in the article.
Others need to know what to do and where to go for help. Please if you can comment on the article or even let the editor know of how Susan has helped so many. Do it! The whole reason Regan did the article was so God could bring good from this evil. Susan is an important part of God's miracle.

Thank you all for your love and your prayers.

The gripping story of Regan's escape from violence would have been a different story had it not been for the help of Susan Murphy Milano. Susan could tell this same story several times over. She is to be commended for selflessly helping abuse victims escape the cycle they are so often caught up in.

If you think this is not a success story, ask any number of dead spouses if they would like to trade places with Regan. Ask any number of missing mothers in Chicagoland, Stacy Peterson, Kathleen Savio,Lisa Stebic, Peggy Dianovsky, Jeri Lynn Duvall. Ask them where they are? Ask them what it's like NOT to escape from a violent relationship.

Regan Martin is an overcomer and has the love and support of her family and many who will never really know her, but she is out! She is safe! Her children are safe! Regan is alive! I know that she would never deny giving credit to Susan for literally saving her life.

When I began to read the story my heart sank. What this young woman survived is a miracle. A abuser with the intent of bodily harm, rape, these are crime's. I can identify with Regan. Just last my abuser was arrested for the attempted murder on me. I was able to get a divorce and while he was in custody waiting for his trial move away to a new state with my 2 children. I didn't have much hope, until Suan Murphy Milano provided assistance in both the civil matter and criminal case.

I am alive and safe because of Susan and no one else. It seems the newspaper disregarded Susan's role in this case and the lives to womens safety. Susan Murphy-Milano deserves a lot of credit for what she does and maybe the Tribune will highlight her work with the importance of everything she does.

So well said, Jane! This is a fantastic article, but without ALSO including information on the THOSE WHO HELPED REGAN ESCAPE = SUSAN MURPHY MILANO, it seems to not be serving the greater purpose that it could...being to HELP OTHERS AS WELL!

I have to agree. Sounds like this case was handed to the Tribune by Susan Murphy-Milano. The reporter should be ashamned of herself in omitting a woman who does this work because her own mother was murdered.

Everyone should email the Tribune editor and reporter each ask they print a story on Susan Murphy Milano.

Great plan!

Please DO send out an email to the reporter of this story, it only takes a moment! Please encourage her to do a follow-up story regarding what Susan Murphy Milano did for Regan, not to mention so many others!

Susan's books and her safe escape plan should be in every women's shelter. Women need the knowledge that they can survive and they can overcome abuse. They can break the cycle, stay safe and keep their children safe.

Re: Front Page Chicago Tribune! Peace4 Cherry's Daughter and her heroic struggle to Escape Abuse!- Peac

I read the article and it made me so mad that it took this woman...this mother...so long and cost so much to get away from such a monster, only to have the courts, the judges & the laws stop her in her tracks and turn her around to start over again. How dare the laws be so protective of monsters and give no thought to the mothers and children involved?
I am grateful to hear and know that much credit is due to the help of Susan Murphy Milano. She has been there, strong and fierce in her battle for so many. God blesses us with her and God bless her.
Sincerely, endangered missing woman Jessie Foster's mom, Glendene.
