We're talking about $2 on a $100 bill. Hard. Very hard. Maybe this is why I'm not rich. Too busy tipping on the post tax amount and not the pretax. Oh well. my yacht purchase will have to wait another couple years.

Especially since most people round up anyway. Or if it's a group and everyone's share is $12.67, most just kick in $13. Though some servers can be demanding - on the Drex show a while back, he had a couple servers say if you can't tip 20% stay home. With this economy, I figure servers are better off with parons who tip low (10-15%)- it may be all they can afford and if people stop eating out - then there's less of a need for servers (as well as oher restaurant personnel.) |

I have this dilemma, the severs at the high-end restaurants usually deliver the worst server whereas the neighborhood restaurant with Miss Smiley keep you entertained with coffee, water, and bread, etc. while waiting for your meal. The high-end restaurants just take the order and disappear to talk with their friends and deliver a mediocre warm meal because they were too busy talking.
We forget that cooks make the meal that you enjoy, it can be the server who ruin a nice meal. So you see my dilemma. I tend to avoid the high-end restaurants because of the poor service. I do return where the service is great but that is more the exception rather than the rule. |

just pay servers a decent hourly rate (when I was a server our hourly rate was $3.20, and that was just to cover our taxes so my paychecks from the restaurant were usually voided - meaning servers literally live off of their tips, minus what they have to share with the bussers and bartenders). then you can forget about all this tip confusion altogether.

IF the tax is so badly needed, then why doesnt the county and OR city employees decrease their salaries, pension and benefits, so there would be more money to operate the budget with.
I dont see them digging into their own pockets. Maybe the county shouldnt pay the commissioners credit card bill expenses or gas expenses. Why doesnt the commissioners donate money back to the county budget? |

Todd Stroger can take a salary benefit cut.. hes over paid for lack of experience anyhow.

Why does someone deserve 20% of the bill for carrying food from a kitchen to a table? If they want a good job, they should go to college.

I hate tipping.

Spend $3 on one of those little tip cards sold at card shops. Use the subtotal & round it up to the nearest dollar. Decide to use the 15% or 20% column and add the tip on accordingly. It's not difficult.

PEOPLE ARE STUPED!
EVEN STUPIDER WITH MONEY! If one couple overtips, then the next couple undertips, it only shows one thing, THEY DONT KNOW HOW TO TIP!! A fool & his money will soon be departed |

You are absolutely correct. I had the best service consistently in Australia where tipping isn't customary and is sometimes considered rude and presumptuous. Just pay servers decently and increase the food price 15-20% and call it a day. |

Good Lord. How cheap can the writer possible be??? She obviously has never waited tables. Waiting tables is HARD work! She should stop nit-picking and tip on the entire amount unless she wants to look like a tight wad in front of her guests. If you can't afford to tip than don't go out to eat period. I'm sure she makes a lot more money than the struggling students waiting tables to pay tuition!

Most of them ARE in college genius. |

To be honest, I would traditionally eat at Ruths Chris(excellent steak in my opinion but for another debate) but with the increase in taxes for Chicago, I will stay in the burbs. My wife and I would usually have about a $225 bill (dinner wine etc) and then tip accordingly, but with the tax increase, i know it is petty, its just not worth it anymore. I'll go to Mortons in Naperville. I have just had enough of the tax and spend Crook County.

I'm assumming you mean only people in high positions. There is absolutely no reason for your typical city employee to take a pay cut. |
||||
Looks like McDonalds for you! |
||||
Obviously you've never done it. Someone else already posted that a lot of them are in college as the wait tables. It's part of going out to eat. If you don't like it, make your own dinner. |
||||
To say Todd Stroger is overpaid is an understatement. He is an idiot and has no business holding his position. |
||||
Changes on the scale you suggest should be based on more than just your vacation in Australia. |
