I think it'll be great for the train as well. I keep going back and forth whether to get the eReader or just get a notebook computer where I can download books. For you book reader people, not sure if you are aware, but in addition to buying books to download, some libraries have services where you can "check out"/download books to your device for free.

On an ipad, you can still download books but do other stuff as well. I agree. I would never buy a dedicated bookreader when the iPad(and its eventual competition) will run bookreader software and much more. AngelaMN wrote: That's all I remember from the conversation. It's like looking at pages in an actual book, rather than like a computer screen, which makes my eyes tired. Different strokes for different folks, but that's what works for me. My sister (the one who is losing her vision) is getting a Kindle. She can enlarge the font so she can see it & the back-lighting seems like a good idea if you spend a lot of time outdoors. I am so sorry for her. She told me, yesterday, that she can't do jury duty because she can't understand the instructions. The interferon really messed her brain up. She can't remember what she read 2 pages ago, but she enjoys just being able to read words. We're going out for the day tomorrow to a craft fair. I think this is something she'll really enjoy. Last nite she told me that she can't figure out how to crochet a granny square. I taught her how to make them just a week ago. My heart is breaking. She's my best friend.

We have both, a 2nd gen Kindle (mine) and an iPad (J's, but I use it more), and if you're going to choose one over the other, iPad is the way to go. I like the screen and the functionality of the Kindle for reading, but it really is redundant to have both. The only thing I can say is that I'm less afraid to bring the Kindle places for fear of it getting broken or stolen, because it costs significantly less and is a little more sturdy (I think). Less bulky, too. The *only* reason I got one was because a friend was upgrading his and was selling this one on the cheap. I couldn't justify buying one at full price, when we already had the iPad.

Well, they have ereaders that are basically MP3s as well. I start thinking of all the brands and options. So, then my mind wanders to the thought that I should just get a netbook and have everything. Of course, then I start thinking -- perhaps a laptop so I can also run movies. By the time I decide I will probably have a desktop computer in a book bag!

My mom was on it for her cancer, and yeah, her brain was pretty fried, too.:-( I just thought it was a combination of chemicals and drugs she had been exposed to. I'm sorry, Andie.

That would be really frustrating. Does she enjoy listening to books? I have some downloaded to my MP3 player and I listen to them when I'm walking or on a plane.

Thanks for the info on the Kindle. My Mom was just wondering last night if we should get one for my Grandma, who is losing her vision. I will pass it on. My heart goes out to you and your sister.

My heart goes out to you and your sister. One of my uncles bought an MP3 player for my grandfather and loaded it up with audio books. Grandfather would finish the books and mail the MP3 player back to my uncle, and he'd re-load it and send it back. I thought that was pretty neat. I can't do the audio books, though. I fall asleep almost instantly.:-)
