NORTHERN MICHIGAN IS VERY BEAUTIFUL. EVEN THOUGH MICHIGAN MAY NEED THE TOURISTS MONEY, MY FEAR IS THAT ALL OF THE AREAS MENTIONED IN THESE POSTS WILL BE BECOME OVERDEVELOPED AND OVERCROWDED. THIS WILL OF COURSE TAKE AWAY ALL THE CHARM, BEAUTY AND RUGGEDNESS THAT WE ALL LOVE. I'VE BEEN GOING ONLY TWICE A YEAR FOR THE LAST FIVE YEARS AND ALREADY SEE TOO MUCH DEVELOPEMENT OF BEAUTIFUL, PRECIOUS LAND TAKEN UP BY CONDOS AND HUGE MCMANSIONS. DONT LET THIS BECOME ANOTHER OVER DEVELOPED DOOR COUNTY, WHERE THE CHARM OF YESTERYEAR IS LONG GONE.

I have been going up there for nearly 40 years! My grandparents first went up there, then my parents, and now I bring my family.

Please stay away (especially those from Illinois)! I do not want the charm spoiled.

I was lucky enough to grow up in this area. My great grandparents homesteaded in Northport (and the farm's still in the family). Now that I'm grown, it's often that I wish I could return. Nostalgia aside, there are a couple things you missed. Hiking and camping on North or South Manitou islands (the ferry leaves daily from Leland). There are also numerous oppotunities for canoe trips...Platte River, AuSable River, Manistee river, etc. Also, you simply must watch the stars from Good Harbor Beach...it's where Good Harbor Trail (local rd. 651 runs into M22). On a clear night, it's like seeing the entire universe.

If you like good craft beer, one of the best breweries in Michigan, and that's saying a lot, is in Bellaire about 30 mins north of TC - turn north at Acme and go to the east side of Torch Lake.
Short's Brewing Company in Bellaire MI.
Pretty little town, great beer and good food.

Well, then you are a lucky person from "ILLINOIS" that is able to spend much time up there. If you followed your own advice you should not go up to Michigan. That was a stupid comment to make about people from Illinois.

What are you talking about? I want to get away! I want to feel part of another culture. I have lived in Greece and Germany for lengthy periods of time. I enjoyed the aspect of living in the midst of another culture. When I encountered Americans, it sorted spoiled the expenience. So, as with Leelanau county, I do not want other people from Illinois to spoil the experience. Just ask people, who go to Lake Geneva. Your comment is off base

Don't forget golfer Walter Hagen's bar of choice, Little Bo's, on the west end of town. He also had a house for over 20 yrs. out on the eastern shore of beautiful Long Lake!!!!! Sir Walter passed away in that house in 1969.

YOU are "off base". And a total hypocritial selfish idiot. So you think you're the only person from Illinois that should go to Michigan or any anywhere else because you want the "total" experience"?
"Hey, listen up everyone else in Illinois and America, STAY HOME, because this person can't stand that you are also traveling and want to experience different cultures too. Don't get in her/his face because that would ruin the experience." Oh brother!!!

And who cares where you have lived, you still are living in "Illinois". Maybe you should have stayed over in Europe, because it sounds like you have a bad attitude toward all Americans. But I am sure you have made your living here in the United States for your travels to other countries.
Yes, you are very much a HYPOCRITE.
