My dad was a DIE-HARD Beatles fan (I can still barely listen to them today as I was so over-saturated with it as a kid)who spent his only (at the time) child's (me) first birthday watching their first appearance on Ed Sullivan. He listened to a lot of different stuff though which is why I still have an affinity for bands such as CCR (google it), and people like BB King, Muddy Waters, and Wilson Pickett. My mom was way into country music (the old stuff that gives me a headache) and so I heard a lot of the old time singers (a large majority of whom are dead now) and hated it. I have however been able to appreciate it a lot more as I've gotten older. They were BOTH into Elvis. Another one I can barely tolerate because of over-saturation. Consequently I never particularly restricted Chris and he was exposed to the stuff I liked as well. He grew up with an affinity for RUSH (RUSH RULES!!!!!) Bob Marley and Alice Cooper as well as his own stuff.

He usually has a medical student following him around. I made reference to the Ethel Merman appearance . The doc, aged about 65 drew a blank. the med student aged maybe 24 had a very hard time not cracking up.

The other day we were listening to NPR and they mentioned some guy who'd written some "famous" piece of music "way back in 1967" had died.(So famous that I can't recall what it was or who it was at the moment. That could be because I'm having a "senior moment" or because I didn't pay a lot of attention those days to who wrote what.) Anyway it was the "way back in 1967" that got to me. I graduated from high school that year. So yes, I'm definitely a confirmed member of the "old folks." It gets really bad when I find out that a former student (high school) is now a grandparent. It feels like my own kids are grandparents even though none are and I don't think any are old enough. But realistically, I suppose it would be possible if my 38 year old unmarried son had married young, he could have a child old enough to have a child of his/her own. I'm just not psychologically ready to be a great grandparent yet. And even though I'm not shy about my age being known, it just struck me in a rather bad way for someone to say "way back..." in reference to a year I graduated from high school. It gives me a whole new perspective of how my parents must have felt at times. I, too, am class of 67 .At my 10year HS reunion, we had "prizes" for things like farthest traveled to the reunion, least hair and oldest child. One woman, I don't remember who, had gotten married and pregnant right after graduation. About 6-7 years ago,one of my girls' friend's mom is much younger than the rest in the neighborhood. They had a party to which family, including grandparents were invited. Turns out I knew the mom's parents from HS because they graduated a year before I did. It still bemuses me that my HS contemporaries are grandparents of kids my own children's age .

Old people shopping at Dayton's loved it when I would blurt out "Rosemary Clooney" or "Perry Como!" when a song would start on the overhead music. We had some god awful "pop" stuff, but when they played the stuff from the 1930s through the 1950s, I was in heaven. I don't get tired of that stuff. Young Tony Bennett, Dean Martin, Duke Ellington, Ella Fitzgerald, Count Basie Orchestra... that's the stuff.

I really got in to 70s rock in high school. It's probably my favorite genre over all.

He saw RUSH when he was 2...and 4...and 7...and 10...and 13...and 15...17...21.... Saw Ozzy (with my sister) when he was 8. <shrug> He did a lot on his own too. A couple years ago (2005?) I took him to Greenday. The last show he went to (last year) was either Nine Inch Nails or Avenged 7x, he saw both but I cant remember which was the last one. Both were birthday gifts from me. One year I think it was Christmastime-ish I got him tickets for SAD. I'm pretty sure he saw Rob Zombie once too. The only show I know he wanted to go to that he never did was the Stones. Do they still tour? Now that I think about it all kinds of bands/singers come to mind. Wow we saw a lot of concerts over the years...

It's one of my favorite movies. It still makes me laugh. The actress who played the mean old mother died and I felt bad when I heard about that. My grandson has the DVD and we play it every so often. I mentioned the movie to a 14 year old and was surprised he'd never heard of it.

I've always been fascinated with rock music, but my habit was never subsidized or supported by my parents. I saw the Stones in 1997. Really, really...really good concert, despite the fact that I had almost the worst seats available. I haven't heard of them touring lately, but I saw an advertisement yesterday on some travel channel we were watching for an HD concert of theirs. Until the Rage Against the Machine concert I went to in 2007, it was my all-time favorite concert. Ozzy's one I'd still like to see. I've only in the last several years come to really appreciate Rush. They made an appearance in the movie "I Love You, Man", if you haven't seen it. Was very cool.

Because 22 years before me was WWII I think of the sailor suits that were in style and the swing music. I can remember watching I Love Lucy reruns even though they were made before I was born.
My kids are 17 and 12. My husband and I use the catch phrases etc.. from the shows we grew up with in the late 70s/early 80s. Remember the Welcome Back Kotter episode when Barbarino said "gimmee drugs gimmee drugs"? One time one of us did that routine when we needed some Aleve or something and the kids looked at us like we were nuts. I found a you tube clip (really funny) and they were like "hey it's John Travolta". To them Valerie Bertinelli is the Jenny Craig lady, not Barbara Cooper from One Day at a Time or Mrs. Eddie Van Halen. We have a ring tone of Aunt Ester from Sanford and Son that's really funny, and of course the kids didn't get that either till we explained.

There isn't much RUSH that I miss out on, even after all these years. I got turned onto them WAY back in like 1976, so they were still pretty much a cult band then and hadn't really had too much exposure in the US. I remember when their Moving Pictures album (the one with "Tom Sawyer") came out in '81 and suddenly EVERYONE was "into" RUSH and telling em how good they were. <shrug> Duh! My parents never paid for my music addictions either. I paid all of my own concert things (except one time my mom LOANED me the money to see Bob Dylan back in '78), records (yep on vinyl), tapes, CD's etc. I could remember how hard (as a kid) it was sometimes to get the money to go see someone I really, really, really wanted to see, so I liked to help Chris out whenever I cold. Mostly though he paid his own way. The Greenday thing was my idea (I really like them) and Chris liked them a lot too and it just kind of made sense for him to take me so I didn't have to go alone. Plus I'm not all "uncool" enough for him to actively NOT want to spend time with me. I actually donated some money to a charity thing via Trent Reznor's website which got him awesome NiN tickets, a CD (autographed) a backstage thing and a (autographed) shirt. It was expensive but way worth it because he was dancing on air when he found out what all was included. <shrug> It was a birthday gift. I have the CD, shirt and backstage pass (signed VIP pass)with his other stuff that I've kept. He wanted to see Dylan when he was old enough that he started to appreciate him, but it never came to pass. If he was still alive and the opportunity presented itself though I would make sure he got to. Oh well c'est la vie I guess. I've never actually seen Ozzy. That was really my sister's thing. The time Chris went with her she called me on a Friday (after work) and wanted me to go with her but I had to work the next day and didn't feel like going out and being up that late. I asked Chris if he wanted to go with her, asked her if she wanted to take him (she had 2 tickets and no one to go with) and they both said yes. I felt more or less safe with him (remember 8 years old) going with his aunt who doesn't drink and wasn't doing drugs at that time. He still was telling people about how he saw Ozzy when he was only 8 years old up to only shortly before he died. I guess he had a good time.:) My dad (and some of his pot head friends) took me with them to see the Grateful Dead when I was like 5 or so. Back in the day before anyone really knew much about them and Jerry Garcia was still young. I remember the event; going, music, stuff like that but I was really too young to have a good memory of it. Still, I can say I was there in San Francisco, at the height of all of the hippie stuff and saw them. Kinda cool.:)

Go figure...
