That's the thing, it's just harder to sleep. My body seemed to fight it, even though I've never had problems taking naps in the afternoon or whatever. I rarely got a decent 'night' of sleep.

my niece works 3 am to 3 pm as a nurse... that's a really sucky start time, not sure why that hour. if they want 12 hour coverage (understandable) in addition to the 7 or 8 hour shifts, why not 12-12 or soemtihg more reasonable than a 3 am start? To me, taht's too late to be early and too early to be late (or soemthign like that). i e-mailed her soemthing the other day and almost texted her to follow up, but dno't know what days she works or not and when she goes to be when she does. her fiance seems to be adjusting ok, especially now that they got a new couch (that he gets to sleep on when she has to work).

but, in a few years, i think she'll earn enough senority to get midnights instead of 3 am starts. plus she's in a specialty unit and loves it (not everyone does), so she'll be around long enoguh to hand pick her shifts.

That's just how the 12 hour shift rolls. 1st shif is usually 3a to 3p or 7a to 7p. 2nd shift is either 11a to 11p or 3p to 3a. It's one of those unexplainable mysteries, like how a light switch works, no one knows.

Physiologically, H. sapiens is diurnal. There is a difference in what "comes naturally" to humans as opposed to what we can "train" ourselves to endure.

I think the data suggests otherwise. However, I sleep best between like 3am and noon.

I agree, the data and research are pretty extensive -- swing shift workers have less quality sleep and don't live as long. That was in the news in the last couple of years.

To me, it's a sacrifice a lot of parents make so they can avoid day care, or to bring in extra money (swing shift often makes 10% extra). I don't think it's the actual first choice for many people working that shift.

The families I knew where dad worked nights, the kids seemed to not get much time with dad. And hanging out at their house was a lot of "Sssh your dad's sleeping."

I love 2nd shift (3:30 to midnight)-- I worked it quite happily for years! Monday to Friday, weekends off. If it were available in my current job, I wouldn't mind going back to it.

I never worked 3rd shift long enough at a time to get used to it, only a week here and there. It was tough to adjust. Mostly those were 12-hour shifts; 7 PM to 7 AM, working in a photo lab. I was drinking then, too. This was in a mill town back in the 70s, and it was perfectly acceptable to go to the bar no matter what time you got off work! But since I lived about 10 miles away and had to drive home, I was afraid to start drinking in that town. Especially as I was a young married woman and the men outnumbered the women a couple of hundred to one! I may have been a lush but I'm not foolish! So I'd drive home and hit the bar right up the street from my house -- where there *wasn't* a mill running 24-7, so it was pretty empty. And depressing as hell! I'd just have a quick one or 2 and go home and crash. Only to wake in the late afternoon and have to go right back to work. I didn't get much done but made a lot of $$ those weeks.

I don't know how I'd do on midnights 30+ years older and sober, and only 8 hours rather than 12. Not gonna happen in my current field!

But by far the worst shift I ever worked, as far as my bio-clock goes, is 6 AM - 2:30 PM! And I only did it twice, for a week at a time, about 10-12 years ago. I thought, "Oh, it won't be too bad -- I'll get off early and have time to go do stuff, swim, whatever...." Nope, I'd get off work early and FALL ASLEEP for HOURS! And feel like crap. But I know several people, including my very own husband, who are natural early-birds and love 6-2:30. Hey, takes all kinds!

I've seen numerous letters to advice columns over the years from people who have a terrible time waking up in the morning, and constantly oversleep and get in trouble at work or school. I just want to grab them and shake them and say, "The world is full of jobs where they need steady 2nd-turn workers. FIND ONE!"

Ok, Ive killed them all in there sleep, worthless beings.

Ive slept with all their husbands and taught their children to smoke crack....

Ive learned that smoking dope is a good thing, and that ice cream is my friend.
