The Democrats who voted in favor of the resolution had no contrary evidence to weigh agains Bush and Cheney's claims. They had doubts, but no concrete facts to oppose those of the administration. So it took considerable courage to take up a contrarian stand.
It was not a matter of pursuing their own selfish political interests, but what to believe at the moment the administration raised the issue of national defense.
And don't think Bush and Cheney didn't calculate how much pressure Congress was under to accept their claims giving the upcoming mid-term elections.
Despite all the political heat generated by Bush and Cheney's lies, Democrats resisted the push to war more than Republicans.
In the Senate, 48 out of 49 Republicas voted Yes, compared to 29 out of 50 Democrats.
In the House, Democrats were even more resistant. Only 82 out of 208 voted Yes, compared to Republicans where 215 out of 221 voted Yes.
I'd say it was your party that voted for re-election over the interests of the nation. The record shows it.
