Marc wrote: OK, on to something practical. In the interests of full disclosure you should know I'm writing this from the wealthiest county per capita in Texas - yeehaw and shucks. First, I think the folks who siad crime is issue numebr 1 were correct. I think the Michigan National Guard needs to be moved in until police, fire and emt services are capable of handling matters effectively. Before anyone gets loopy, I'd note that they had Louisiana National Guard troops provide this function in New Orleans after Katrina and they only stopped after 3.5 years. Second, with a background in urban studies, I'd agree Detroit is far too large. At a minimum it should be broken up into several smaller communities, and some areas flat out returned to reserves with no one living on them for the forseeable future. Third, I'm also an educator. Instead of the traditional elementary-middle-high school model, maybe honorable school leaving after 10th grade, then varied 2 or 3 years technical or vocational or academic training as an alternative? In any case, breaking up the school system would be a real blessing for students AND taxpayers. Fourth, taxes should be significantly whacked, especially city income tax and property tax as well as the entities receiving said taxes. While I'm a dyed in the wool Leftist, I agree that if taxes aren't supporting services then there's no reason for their collection. Finally, sounds like a big mess of folks in Detroit have given up hope. Too bad, cause there are a lot of folks who are looking for cheap land and a new chance but expect to be treated fairly and safely.... in my world, i can't wait till mexico takes back texas. how bout those Cowboys!

It really can't be worse than the blight there now. Invent robocop. He will force everyone to mow their lawns and turn off their TVs. Robocop. Freakin Robocop. The answer has been there for 20 years, just invent him already!!! Now this is what I call a solution !

It looks like its time for a fiscal conservative to come on in and clean up the mess. Too bad most blacks dont vote republican. I guess detroit is doomed since democrats typically have no idea on how to govern.

The median home price has absolutely nothing to do with politics and everything to do with jobs. The automobile industry has abandoned the State of Michigan, especially the Detroit Metropolitan Area. On top of that Wall Street is stealing the nations wealth. Detroit is being especially hit by the disaster in the financial sector as well. No one is going to buy a house in an area that has no jobs. Last one out turn off the lights.
