I don't want them to be like the people from Wall-E, all zombified out from not moving all day. I want them to have a ton of unstructured free play, outside, with kids they're not related to, with adult interaction happening only when there is bloodshed. ;-) It is still happening, but you have to look for it. In our neighborhood, the kids play outside all the time.

Mary Lieber wrote: What is wrong with parents that they want their 8 year old to stay clean? They should come home dirty, sweaty and with a huge smiles on their faces. So true. Luckily,*most* of the families we socialize with go by the adage that you can measure how much fun a child had that day by how filthy they are. Isn't that what washing machines and bathtubs are FOR?

squishymama wrote: <quoted text> There's a book called "Free-Range Kids" where the author uses statistics to help parents get over the fear of letting their kids out unsupervised, due to things like fear of kidnapping, etc. Haven't read it yet, but I will. She even includes a note template in case the kid get stopped for being alone. From NPR: http://www.npr.org/blogs/health/2010/08/30/12... Based on surveys Barnes collected, the top five worries of parents are, in order:
1. Kidnapping 2. School snipers 3. Terrorists 4. Dangerous strangers 5. Drugs
But how do children really get hurt or killed?
1. Car accidents 2. Homicide (usually committed by a person who knows the child, not a stranger) 3. Abuse 4. Suicide 5. Drowning

LW1: You are right, but it is more important to let go of the right/wrong debate, continue to express your concern to your siblings who live closer to Mom, and put the focus on making sure that she is OK, even if it means that you have to fly all the way to New York to see for yourself. You acted out of love; do NOT be ashamed.

Also she quit track -- maybe a lack of rigerous, mandatory exercise contributed as well.

L1- Many elderly people say they don't want to be a burden on their children, but I think that secretly, they're happy to get the attention. I hope the older woman gets what she needs from her children who live locally. It sounds like they'd prefer to forget she exists. And that's sad. L2- How do you fall in love with someone you can't get along with? You're both too high maintenance. L3- If you'd stop making comments about your daughter's weight, you'd have no risk of damaging your relationship. Now, clean all that crappy junk food out of the cabinets. And don't buy any more. Ever hear of an apple? Fresh fruit! What a wacky concept!
