Full story: Chicago Tribune

A new TV commercial shows kids eating hot dogs in a school cafeteria and one little boy's haunting lament: "I was dumbfounded when the doctor told me I have late-stage colon cancer." It's a startling revelation ...

I have colon cancer. I will NOT let my children eat any processed foods with Nitrates. Lunch meats, hot dogs bacon- all are loaded with these chemicals. My doctor agrees...stay away.
Organic is more expensive, but definitely worth the investment.

Alcohol causes cirrhosis and pancreatitis, fatty foods cause heart attacks, fruits and vegetables sprayed with pesticides cause cancer. Where does it end?

Organic is the best way to go, but is not affordable for most.

Ingesting vitamin C (via a supplement or orange juice) at the same time as foods containing nitrites/nitrates will block their absorbtion dramatically.

Cancer does not develop overnight. What we eat in our youth will affect us as adults. An excellent book with years of research, THE CHINA STUDY, will set you straight on what to eat. Yes, our food has been tampered with for years by big business...Monsanto is a monster controlling our food supply with patented seeds, GMO's, Round-up, etc. READ & make your own decisions on YOUR HEALTH. The closer to nature, the healthier it will be.

"Nitrate-related substances have been reported to cause cancer in animals, but there's no proof they do that in people."

...people aren't animals, therefore hot dogs won't do the same to us.

Face it: the ad was designed to scare people.
FACT - it reaches CHILDREN who are most likely WITHOUT their parents.

That is like a stranger coming up to your child and saying: you are going to die if you eat that. Very impressionable. Which is what the ad was designed to do.

Makes me want to vomit on the person who came up with it OR go up to their child and say: YOUR Mommy and Daddy are going to die, will you be ready for it?

Slight correction there; Alcohol, consumed in excess over a period of time, can cause cirrhosis and pancreatitis. It can also lead to irreversible brain damage, a condition called Korsikov's (sp?) Syndrome.

But researchers are now saying that glass or two of red wine a day seems to cut the risks of heart disease and plaque buildup in the arteries. Who knew wine was healthful?!

So.... let's take hot dogs out of schools and substitute a 4 oz. glass of wine.
JUST KIDDING...

I gave up red meat and hot dogs back in 1980 because my girlfriend, who worked at the health food store, told me about its link to colon cancer. I'll still eat a dog at a ball game,(when I can afford to get a ticket, which is rarely) and I'll eat meat if it's in a sauce, but I believe giving it up is one of the best things that I've ever done for myself, besides quitting smoking cigarettes. For me now it's turkey or veggie burgers and cigars. We all need a vice of some sort!

Nope, organic has its own problems but you won't hear that from the organic nuts.

Hey, that's the best advice I've heard yet! Wine and chocolate cigars, until they're old enough to enjoy the flavorful nuances of a finely blended stogie.

Future commercials will have less impact on changing behavior when a lie is uncovered. Makes me wonder if the lady in the throat cancer commercial really lost her voicebox.

We already have a problem with some parents who won't vaccinate their children, who seem unconcerned that their unwillingness may impact the health of other children.

Well thank you Diane, but if you don't mind, I don't think I need to be 'set straight' on what to eat or not eat. I do have a question for you; how do you propose that everyone gets fed if food isn't preserved with chemicals?

Daily Horoscope for December 22

Cancer

If you're busy with a last-minute Christmas shopping trip it will be easy to lose track of how much you're spending, particularly if you're in a panic and desperate to tick off every name on your list. However, you might be in for a nasty shock later on when you tot up the massive amount of money that you parted with. So try to keep a running total in your head or stick to a strict budget for each gift.
