A couple of years ago, a coyote dug himself a den under the front porch of my house. I would see him around late at night. After a few weeks, he moved out.

I would say that it is probably wise to be vigilant with smaller dogs, e.g. keep an eye on them when they go outside during night hours...

My beloved 3 year old 4 pound tinker bell was killed and taken by a coyote Sunday nite the 6th. She was out at 9:30 PM for a potty break. She was attracted to remains of a fresh rabbit kill behind a snow bank. We are located in lake county by russell RD and I-94. Tinker barked 4 times then stopped. 10 minutes later I went outside to call her in. She did not respond. Then I saw the coyote about 400 feet away walking thru a deep puddle.
Tinkers remains have not been recovered and I have not decided what to do when I find the coyotes' den.

I just heard a coyote by the industrial park on gary and elk trail. I have seen on 2 occasions what i thought to be a loose dog running down elk trail towards the industrial park. but after hearing that howl i know it wasnt a dog.

295 coyotes were trapped in the Chicago area? That's a lot. I'm glad something is being done about them. They are potentially very dangerous. Rabies is just one of the concerns. I've seen a whole pack of them on the campus of a community college in the southwest suburbs one night. They were walking through the snow. I can imagine that a pack like that would attack a human under the right circumstances.

You all have it backwards - its' not the critters that are invading, we are impinging on them. they are here because it's where the food is. keep wrecking where these animals live and pretty soon you'll be neighbors with more than harmless coyotes.. when there was a bounty paid on coyote pelts the outcry was unreal; the population went up, their prey is harder to get so they scavage what they can, including your unattened dogs. trust me its not personal

While I too am concerned I have a small dog in the Carol Stream area and don't have a fence we have to remember we've taken over their land. Someone said "I thought this was a thing that only happened in the wild", it is still their home. Our houses are just taking up their space so it's up to us to watch and protect our pets instead of blaming the creatures that are merely trying to survive.

Actually I am not sure about calling Carol Stream police, unless there is imminent danger. They will probably refer you to Dupage County animal control. But they too may not come out either and instead just advise you over the phone.

Last winter I was walking in the forest preserve with my dog. All of a sudden my dog became excited and wanted to run into the woods. I looked to see the reason for the excitement and there he was; really very close to us. I didn't see him because he stood so silently, watching us. He was not excited at all but very alert. It was a lone coyote. My dog wanted to go to him but of course I would not let him. Honestly I was scared. We kept walking and past him by; he turned around and walked away, back into the woods. It was quite an experience.

If it seems like a pack of coyotes, it's more than likely stray dogs. Coyotes are solitary animals. They are usually small, normally going no more than 30-35 lbs. They will avoid anything larger than themselves. So, if you have a small animal, don't leave it outside unattended, don't leave food outside & by all means- secure your garbage cans. They are scavengers & since we've managed to destroy most of their habitat, will do what it takes to survive. They don't know that there is a new subdivision. All they know is that food isn't as plentiful as it used to be. Personally, I get a real thrill when I can catch a glimpse of a coyote. It's just as cool as when I see deer or fox in my front yard. They're all welcome here.

The forest perserves by Moraine Valley has way too many of them out there. Drive down 88th bypass and 107th and you will see them dragging another victim back to the dens.

What do you consider way too many? Victim? No, it's called food. What are they supposed to do, subsist on human's garbage? If we hadn't driven them out of their habitat, there wouldn't be any problems now. The same goes for deer. You push them out of their natural areas, then complain when they eat expensive shrubbery. Move over & give them a little space.

yes vsir... rabies is a problem.. more so in hotter climes
wonder what crossover breeding is possible with other species ...dogs.. etc.. wolves?
there are many attacks documented in the greater chicagoland area including infants and other pets

too bad the nannocrats wont let you take this animal with a bow or firearm in the chicago area
animal control doesn't seem to be doing there job fire them
in case you hadnt noticed whitetail population is high in that area and they do displace fox
when they learn how to pack on deer then you got more problemos
