They should have let it roam and eat some of the natives of Chicago like city hall and cook county.

A trank would have been a much wiser choice of ammo. You're kidding right? I'm an animal lover and all, but I think the City of Chicago could do without a full size Cougar running wild in the streets. Last time I checked, you can't just head over to Target and pick up some animal tranqs and a weapon to deliver it.

I think it's poor form to run the photo of the dead cougar. Completely unnecessary. This animal didn't hurt anyone - why couldn't they just have caught it and handed it over to a rescue group.

Meowch!!! That hurts! Damn overreacting cops, bumbling donut eaters can't even wait for animal control. "Let's shoot some stuff Barney!" "Ok Andy, but first let me see if Goober want to take the first shot!"

I can hardly wait to hear from the jerk who said there was no such thing as cougars any where near the midwest, I guess this makes all his 'data' that he read and posted for us a few weeks ago, obsolete. I doubt he has the courage to eat his words publicly. How do you think the cougar got there? Crossed Western Ave?? It's called HUMAN INTERVENTION!

How absolutely horrific! Why wasn't this animal tranquilized and relocated? The CPD, and especally this officer, should be held accountable. It is very distressing to keep reading stories of humans killing wildlife senselessly in these situations.

The CPD and neighboring community police forces were well aware that there was a wild cat about. There is no reason why this animal could not have been tranquilized and relocated. None at all.

You_Gotta _be_Kidding_Me wrote: Terrible....that such a beautiful animal was shot. The fear-mongers will tell you that it was better the cougar than a person or child...those people watch to much TV. Cougars are solitary animals and will not attack a person unless cornered or surprised. If it wasn't a Chicago cop, then I hope they are trying to catch the person who did the shooting, if it was a cop...shame on them if they weren't being threatened by the animal. The poor cougar was probably more frightened than anyone seeing it. You work at the Zoo or something? Watch lots of Animal Planet? What if the Police did nothing and then someone actually was killed or hurt? Who'd be at fault? Maybe Sigfried(sp?)and Roy could have handled the situation?

I guess the CPD never thought to bring Animal Control along. But then, what's better than a big shootout, and then even nailed an air conditioner!

A trank would have been a much wiser choice of ammo. I must have missed the news story that said that all police cars are fitted with tranquilizer guns and the appropriate doses for a cougar. Or is it that the police should have staked out the big cat and kept it under surveillance until the zoo officials could arrive? I am saddened by the need to take the animal’s life, but the public’s safety needs to come first. To say what you said about the officer that had to take this action is in poor taste and shows a lack of intelligence on your part.

This is so unfortunate-- it's an ignorant tragedy. Why not drug the animal and remove it? I live in Winnetka, and understand the hypothetical threat of these animals, but how neanderthal-like can you get? The animal is simply trying to survive in our world. Unfortunately, another case of Chicago-based civic management being run by a bunch of narrow-minded dis-dat and dosers.

To all those angry at this poor beast's demise, I'd bet you'd be whistling a different tune, it it were you and the cougar...and he's hungry.

For those who wish a tranquilizer had been used: how many police cars do you think come equipped with tranquilizer guns? Also, is it possible that a wild animal that has wandered into a dense residential area might be doing so because it's looking for food and therefore may behave erratically (i.e. attack humans or their pets)?

I don't understand why they had to shoot the animal, why not tranquilize it? But, it is nice to see the cops actually RUNNING after something. That's probably the most exercise any of them have ever gotten.
