Have they been able to confirm the animal is a cougar? I didn't think the north suburban "cougar" would make it into the city without being seen by numerous people.

If it was Animal Control I sure hope they tranquilized it and didn't actually shoot it with a gun. Call me humane I dunno...

The cougar or mountain lion was shot to death in the alley between Hoyne and Hamilton, just north of Roscoe just after 6:00pm. Shots were also fired by police on Seely Avenue. The cat - weighing about 150 lbs was about 5 feet long. The cat was taken by Animal Control an hour later for autopsy. Over 25 police were at the scene.

Well it certainly couldn't have been shot with a handgun - those are illegal in the City.

My guess would be some IDIOT probably had it as a pet and couldn't deal with it any longer and decided to let it loose. It wouldn't be the first time an exotic was let loose when it no longer served a purpose of stature. If this is the case.....Too bad it wasn't the moronic owner who was shot instead.

This is probably the same cougar that was in Wisconsin a couple of months ago.

Beautiful animal. I hope more of the story is released. I wonder why it could'nt have been tranquilized and relocated.

Sad. What did this animal deserve this for? We do have tranquilizers, traps, etc. We are our own worst enemy.

I can't help but feel sorry for the cougar....although it probably would have eaten my small dog if it got the chance.....

Terrible....that such a beautiful animal was shot.
The fear-mongers will tell you that it was better the cougar than a person or child...those people watch to much TV. Cougars are solitary animals and will not attack a person unless cornered or surprised.
If it wasn't a Chicago cop, then I hope they are trying to catch the person who did the shooting, if it was a cop...shame on them if they weren't being threatened by the animal.
The poor cougar was probably more frightened than anyone seeing it.

How the heck is a cougar getting to Roscoe village? I am guessing this was a pet of some sort.

Not realistic that the standard CPD squad car would have a tranquilizer gun of course. Not much choice in the outcome very unfortunately, if the cougar proves to be wild then a relocation would have been nice story.

Poor kitty, why did they shoot him? He was just lost and out of his environment...
