Geez, Crafty B, off your meds today or something? Just because some people choose not to procreate and instead pick up the slack on taking care of animals that other people have carelessly tossed aside, we're "emotionally stunted"? Can you say... "NARROW-MINDED"? Sure, you can!

Alright... you got me... I'll lighten up.

I'm a bit touchy when it comes to kids. It's all the "parent kills/abuses/neglects toddler" articles I see in the paper. I guess I took it out on the dog lovers.

My bad.

Yeah--let's ALL stay on topic and try to remember what the main focus of the article was on: "designer" dogs (and people) who suffer due to overbreeding and the related health problems and resulting heartbreak.

And as for your second comment--that was crass and utterly uncalled for. Let's try to be at least a little civilized here.

Hey man... I admitted I was being uptight... asking me to be civilized too is a little ambitious, no?

Well said. It is damn simple, folks. You breed it, you are responsible for it until it dies, or can take care of itself. Same with children, actually.

So, what you're saying is that you recommend taking defective animals back to the store where you got it.
Why yes. Of course. Defects of any kind are bad. Even in the pets we purchase.
But, fortunately for the animal, you didn't "discover" the "defect" until you had fallen in love with it.
Good. Now you get to keep it. Tell us -- if someone discovers a defect in their child soon after it was born, would you recommend they take it back to the hospital for a refund?
Thought so.
OK genius...
first of all equating a dog with a child is downright moronic..you obviously don't have a child...

second of all, my POINT was that pet stores don't back up their puppies, especially considering the price they charge for puppies and the fact that they supposedly guarantee the health of the puppies they sell. I wasn't going to return the puppy you idiot. I just wanted the pet store to compensate me for the increased medical bills; but at the VERY LEAST return my phone calls. Not to much to ask for someone who just cashed my check.

Don't read between the lines and invent situations in your little mind..you shouldn't make judgments on something you know NOTHING about.

BTW, my dog is now 3 years old and the delight of our home.

Ummm - Cheryl - did you miss the earlier posts between Pingu & Crafty b re: kids / dogs / ok to have different life choices - not all of which will include kids?

re: mutt from pet store - glad to hear s/he is healthy.

I understand your expectation that pet store would sell you a healthy animal. However - pet stores buy from puppy mills / puppy mills don't have "dog health" at the top of their list. "Looks healthy" yes. "Healthy dog" - who cares.

Last - was it really necessary to call the other poster an idiot? Not possible to get your point across in a nicer way?

Yes, dear readers. We can at least act nice, whether or not we *are* nice. Polite discourse is a lot more interesting than name-calling.

Sorry I do apologize for the name-calling. But he was making alot of insulting accusations concerning my motives in purchasing my pet. I was actually AGREEING with the posts regarding unscrupulous pet stores in case that point was missed. And life choices regarding kids vs. pets is TOTALLY off the point in this forum. It's really funny what people choose to pick up on in these forums.

Agreed - the post you were replying to was a little extreme in their analogy. However - don't like it when posters start name calling. Makes it too much like some of the other forums where the bottom-feeders come out to play en mass.

I "rescued" my cockapoo puppy from a friend who bought him at a pet store and wasn't willing to take time to potty train him or walk him. He is 10 months old (almost 11) and so far is really healthy. Our animal shelter only had pit bulls and pit bull mixes too! Not everyone wants that sort of dog - I wanted a furry fuzzy medium sized dog for a companion and I'm GLAD I rescued Brody! I'd do it again in a heartbeat! Cockapoos need love too!

Okay, I'm going to keep this brief:

I worked for ten years at an animal hospital and have spent the last 7 years training, rescuing, fostering and rehoming abused dogs.

1. Well over 95% of dogs in pet stores have roots at puppy mills. These dogs are not what I would consider sound, either by breed standard, general health or upbringing.

2. People that think all pitbulls are the same are the people believing everything they see on television. Pit bulls rank higher on independance temperment test results than Golden Retrievers. If you abuse a dog, you end up with a dangerous animal. If you treat a dog well, and give him rules, boundaries and limitations you will have a great pet. My pit bull is one of the most obedient and even tempered dog I've ever encountered (of the thousands, by the way).

If you're interested in the independant truth on pit bulls, google "ATTS". It will send you to their home page, atts.org . Different breeds are tested in a variety of situations, pitbulls pass over 85% of the time.
