1. You're husband is an asshat, that's the only lesson he's teaching someone. The only way you're going to teach him a lesson is not refuse to get in a car with him until he quits driving in a way that puts you in danger. And point out to him that, if he's going 5 over, he doesn't get to decide how much over the speed limit anyone else gets to go.
2. Having to write lines in front of her friend? That's her lingering complaint from her childhood? We should all be so lucky.

Once you are on the highway the ambient speed is usually higher and people who appoint themselves monitors by driving at or close to the limit like LW’s husband do impede the flow of safe travel, but try telling that to a cop I've been meaning to ask teh cops & retired cop in my extended family what criteria they use(d) for pulling people over. I find that i'm more likely to drive more over teh speed limit on the highway, but i have my personal speed limit taht i don't like going over, even if prevailing traffic is going that fast. Then i stay more to the right - there are 4 lanes on the toll way by me, and even though i pay for them, i don't feel i have to use all of htem! And i watch it even more closely when i'm visiting my in-laws in Wisconsin. Out of state plates are easier pickin's i've heard...

To save gas, I've been doing very well at not going more than 5mph over the limit, and the bonus is, no worries about being pulled over. Only the asshattest of cops is going to pull someone over for going 5 miles over, especially since it's not like I'm on the road by myself, I'm always surrounded by other cars, most of them going faster.

My dad, in his Prius, will put the cruise control on 55 and just ride the right lane. He has no problems going slower than everyone else. I had an anthropology professor in college who had a theory about driving. He said that your heart rate went up in relation to how much over the speed limit you drove, so consequently he never sped. No one ever wanted to ride to the dig site with him. :D

Then she tried going 5 UNDER the speed limit and it doesn't happen anymore. She thinks that the slower speed is much more noticeable so they get over in the left lane earlier (if that makes sense the way I said it).

Dear Jon - Oh I've met you many times, and you frustrate me with your petty power play every time. But you haven't taught me a thing, because your entire impact on my life ends when I finally leave you in my rearview mirror.
P.S. Why the fark is what I think or do more important in your life than what your wife thinks or does?
Dear Jon's wife - I dunno, being able to to arrive in a calm and unfrazzled manner, in one piece, seems like a worthwhile expenditure of additional gas and time to to me. The inconvenience factor is there either way, so why isn't occurring to you to take the version that leaves you with peace of mind and body? Why is it up to you to have consideration for him that he won't have for you? If he doesn't like it, he can drive in a way that allows you to feel safe in a car with him. Until then, the extra gas is a necessary expenditure. Seriously, stop thinking that saving money is worth more than your life is.

Yeah, I know what you mean. I don't like being the passenger either. And if it weren't for the posted speed limits I'd be hammer down. But no, I drive defensively and stay in the right lane at all times. That oncoming traffic scares the daylights out of me. You just never know when someone coming toward you at a high rate of speed might drop his cigarette or spill his gin and tonic or something. Or have an important phone call he is attending to.

Highlight the section in the Rules of the Road that state that driving in the passing lane is illegal and then repeat that like a mantra next time he starts doing this. And I agree, this cannot be the only place where this a-hole behavior shows itself. I think it's entirely possible that he is only an a-hole on the road. I have ridden with people who vent when driving and do equally stupid things. Has anyone ever driven in Boston? The drivers there are very aggressive, but the people there are very nice.
