MLB trade talk: Roy Halladay biggest name on trade market

A trade is far more likely next year if the Jays are out of the race by the All Star break like this year.If talks break down for a new contract he'll be a"rent a player" to a contender so Toronto gets SOMETHING for developing one of the top pitchers in the game

Why would the Blue Jays taken anyone else in the Sox system except Beckham?! The caliber of player Beckham is...that is what Ricciardi wants! He doesn't want B list of young players, it's right there in your article Phil...or should I call you Fill since that's pretty much what your articles have become.

It would take probably take at least the top young players in any organization, maybe more. The only bargain that Halladay's new team would be getting is the money owed on the remainder of his contract.

The Cubs should go after Halliday. It's a known fact that Milton Bradley eats up the weak AL pitching and a smart GM like JR knows that. Package him with Harden or Theriot and it should be a win-win.

The inanity of the Halladay-to-Sox scenario Rogers presents in this column is so off the charts that it should have never seen the light of publication. Why have other columnists been let go ahead of this guy?

Neither Chicago team is getting Halladay. The Cubs don't have the money right now and probably don't have anyone Toronto would want beyond Vitters. Everyone seems to agree that Gordon Beckham is untouchable but unfortunately it's going to take a player like Beckham to get a player like Halladay. Ricciardi isn't some backwoods rube who's going to sell you his land for a sack of magic beans. Also, the Jays don't have to trade Halladay. As pointed out in the article his contract is a relative bargain so money is not an issue for the Jays. Next year with a healthier rotation that includes Halladay they could be a competitive team.

To actually say that the Sox could get Halladay without giving up Beckham and Ramirez is completely asinine.

Here, JP, we'll take one of the best pitchers in the game (a true ace, unlike "Z" who just plays an ace in his contract) and give you 1) our overpaid slumping malcontent who has never been anywhere for more than a year and can't hit weak NL pitching, 2) a fragile pitcher the A's gave away who's probably injured right now, and 3) a utility player who passes for a starter on the Cubs. Oh, and 4) we'll throw in one of our one-dimensional 4A players like Hoffpair or Fox. Okay? Great.

As a Cubs fan I think, and hope, his post was a joke. Because again Phil Rogers posted almost the same thing about how the Sox could get Halladay.

I wouldn't talk. The Twins have given away more talent than anybody. You could field an all star team just with former Twins!

You overrate the ChiSox system greatly. It is ranked in the bottom third, even after acquiring prospects for Vazquez.

The Cards and Brewers have better systems according to most MLB scouts. However, both have financial limitations (especially St. Louis.)

The Sox have the prospects and the $$$, but there is no way that Ricciardi trades Halladay within his own division.

The Dodgers could snag Halladay if they will part with Kershaw. That would basically be Halladay-now for maybe-Halladay-in-5-years. As Cub fans know, always trade "might become" for "is" as most "might becomes" do not!

Actually, all knowledgeable baseball people know that pitching is much better in the AL than in the NL, and that the best pitching in the AL is concentrated in the AL East.

Again, did the AL's annual stomp of the NL in interleague play teach people nothing?(Indeed, if it were not for the Jays weird inability to beat inferior NL teams, the numbers would be even more lopsided!)

I still don't get how anyone thinks that the Jays are going to take anyone but Gordon Beckham, and who knows else, for Halladay. Gavin Floyd?! Really?! And an injured Carlos Quentin?

The Sox double-A team in Birmingham had one of the top three records (LA Dodgers & Akron Zips were the other two) at any level of professional baseball in the first half of the season. That doesn't happen by accident. Two players from that team, Beckham and Poreda, are already with the Sox. Two others, Tyler Flowers (C) and Dayan Viciedo (3B) will be playing in the all-star futures game. Jordan Danks (CF), CJ Retherford (IF/OF/C/P), Stefan Gatrell (OF), Dan Hudson (P) all with Birmingham and Dexter Carter (P) at Kanapolis (single-A) are other "A" list prospects. I'm forgetting one other player at Kanapolis but you get the point.

Trade Dotel, Ramirez, and some minor league pitching prospects. What would be the point of trading Floyd? All you essentially do with that is upgrade one pitcher. If you keep Buerhle, Danks, Floyd, and Contreras, and then get Halladay, you've got the best 5 man staff in the Central. If you swap out Floyd for Halladay, then you're still lacking a 5th starter. I don't want to see us trying out a different pitcher every couple of weeks to try and lock down the 5th spot. Keep all the starters, add Halladay, and you've got the staff locked in, and can deal whatever minor league pitchers you have left for some position prospects or an established player in whatever position you need an upgrade.

A pitcher can only win so many games in a season. How long has it been since Denny McClain won 30? Halladay is certainly one of the best but by trading Floyd in the deal just how many more wins would that translate into during the course of the year considering they have nobody close to Floyds ability to move into his spot?

Throwing out Halladays call up year of 1998 and not counting this years stats from 1999-2008 he has averaged 13 wins per year. He won 22 games in 2003 and 20 games in 2008. Throw out his high total of 22 and his low total of 4 during that span and you are at 13 wins per year. Unless Kenny Williams can come up with another 10-15 game winner like Floyd and another what looks to be 10-year plus major leaguer like Beckham forget about it. Add to the fact of how many years the Sox have Floyd and Beckham wrapped up on the cheap and the deal makes absolutely no sense. Now give me a pure fantasyland trade of Floyd for Halladay straight up and I am all over it!

They want more than that because they want prospects. Any trade scenario with the Cubs would involve Josh Vitters and they aren't ready to do that.

Colon will be next at No.5 and if he fails, Poreda will hop in.
Nothing to worry about.
Just worry about guys like Danks and Richard throwing strikes when the games matter.
Those two have cost the Sox consecutive games.
