It's a tragedy for all involved. Thoughts remain with the family and friends of the victim, as well as those who witnessed and responded to the scene.

What happened to the old comments board about this topic?

A few witnesses on that board commented that the man was riding on INNER Lake Shore Drive. Bikes are allowed there, and many people take it to access the lakefront path. The cyclist was struck by a car on Inner Lake Shore, then flew over to main Lake Shore Drive where he was struck.

Agreed, biking on main Lake Shore Drive would be like biking on I-94: a suicide. But common sense, and the comments on the old board, convince me this was not the case.

Having said that, it looks like news reports are all over to board. ABC7 is reporting it was a pedestrian who ran across the lanes (what?!?!) I'm hoping the story gets sorted out.

Thoughts go out to his family. What a tragedy.

This is precisely why I don't blame cyclists for riding on the sidewalks, even though I mostly walk. I admit they can be annoying some times, but can you blame cyclists for not riding in the street?

We aren't safe anywhere these days. I used to ride my bike mainly in the park when I lived lake front - even that could be chancy. Some bikers put their heads down and cycle very fast without looking out for others. We are responsible for out own actions but are also responsible to be careful to not injure others.

Being a Glenview resident he may have thought he was safe - especially if he was on the inner drive. But some of these cab drivers we have today.... Wow! Tell them to go north and they step on the pedal heading south!

Too young to die.

Let me state this is caps:

THE VICTIM WAS NOT CROSSING OR CYCLING ON LSD. HE WAS CYCLING ON THE INNER DRIVE.

For those who want to know the details of what really happened, read the witness accounts in the thread that was attached to a previous version of this article:

http://www.topix.net/forum/source/chicago-tri...

It's a damn shame that every media outlet in Chicago is reporting the same erroneous police and fire reports, instead of going out and interviewing actual witnesses to the tragedy.

The med student only heard from someone else that he got hit by a cab. However, The Trib and Suntimes say he was crossing LSD, as does cbs2:

[Major Accidents Investigation Unit traffic specialist Galo] Gutierrezsaid the victim had attempted to walk or run across the lanes, but a wrecked bicycle was seen in the middle of the traffic lanes.

The man ran into the front panel of a white pickup truck, according to Gutierrez, who said the actual impact took place in the second lane, heading west to east.

If he was biking the inner drive as some say...this is tragically sad, and when are these cabbies going to be held more responsible for their crappy driving.

If he was crossing LSD as some say, he took a chance with his life and lost.

Either way, I pray for his family at this time.

OK i read the other postings (from last night's story). I'm wrong and shocked. How friggin fast was the cab going? I can't believe he flew with the bike that far. He had to have been killed instantly.

Inner or outer? Nobody seems to know for sure, especially the Trib.

Looking at the picture, that bike is in the Outer Drive.

Three lanes - Planter Median - Three Lanes - Belmont Harbor.

The underpass to go below outer LSD from inner LSD is on the eastern edge of inner LSD just north of the 3300 block. He was probably heading for that underpass to get on the bike bath east of outer LSD. There had to be several eyewitnesses from pedesterians to other drivers and potentially even security cameras from some of the LSD buildings. The driver will be caught.

What was he doing onthe drive? Where was his sense of self-preservation? Obviously, the Hit-and-Run driver must be found, but Adam Andersen appears to have not had any common sense.

Terrible reporting by the trib. Thumb through these comments and everybody has a different take on what happened. How about some real details trib? So we can have a 'real' debate between angry motorist and bicyclist for the umpteenth time.

I guess we will never know if the biker was heading towards the bike trail, or if the cabbie sped around abus and struck the bicyclist without seeing him. Also, the biker may have been weaving, and not easily visible though there was still sunlight out. The city must begin posting vertical signage alerting motorists of bicyclists in this congested area. There should be traffic controllers out there during rush hour. How many bicyclists have to die before the city takes action. BTW, there IS NO LAKEFRONT BIKE TRAIL north of Hollywood Ave. and bicyclists are forced to use city streets or Sheridan Rd. Very dnagerous especially at night. Check out www.fotp.org !!!

This is so sad and confusing. As a driver, I would never be looking for a bicycle on Lake Shore Drive! How was he crossing?

Fleeing the scene is shameful! I know that Lake Shore Drive can be crazy and it may seem good to depart the drive after an accident but ... not good at all.

I am so sorry for his family.

BTW ... how do we know that the driver "fled the scene"? Again, these are the Tribs words. Are there witness accounts? We do not know the full account. Perhaps, they were not aware of what truly happened.

The real story here may be the outright awful reporting by the Tribune. And from there the larger story may well be that the cuts instituted by Sam "Big Time Deficit Financing" Zell have already began to take effect.

This is true bush league work. But I suspect, we will see a lot more in the coming months/years.

When I first saw the headline, I was thinking, "what the heck is someone doing on LSD on a bike?!?" I am glad that wasn't the case and am sorry for this guy's friends and family.

While I am no friend to the wild, law breaking bikers of Chicago, a lot of cabbies are just as bad. And THEY are behind the wheel of a 4000 pound Crown Vic.

There needs to be a serious attitude shift from bikers, cabbies and drivers in order to stop these senseless deaths. There is some very bad behavior out there and it needs to stop.

One hopeful sign is that since gas prices have gone up, traffic accidents have plummeted. Driving behavior has actually changed for the better! However, during this time the number of bikers has also gone up (for obvious reasons). Normally, this is good. But I'm afraid it has emboldened a number of bikers to more blatantly disobey the law and put themselves and others at risk.

Please be careful out there folks! Follow the rules and don't get yourself or anyone else killed!
