If people get in a boat without life preservers and drown, I'd say they made a stupid choice. Key word "choice". In America that used to be allowed. Newsflash: not everybody needs to be babysat, some of us can still think for ourselves. Take your fines and shove them where the sun don't shine.

DCNR rangers have the same authority as police officers. The DCNR discourages writing tickets, preferring warnings whenever possible. Maybe some are bad, but the only ones I've known at White Clay Creek have been great. I'll just appreciate 'em more.

Very well said! The DCNR Ranger follows three tenants in the performance of his/her job. Public Contact (information), First Response (Medical Emergencies) and Law Enforcement. This is no small task. The state's DCNR Rangers have worked very hard to be by far the most understanding and public friendly police in Pennsylvania. Sadly, people like the one who initiated this post are ignorant due to this necessity to be three in one cops. I can't tell you how many times I've had to deal with people from minor rules infractions to felony fugitives, who were appreciative of the way I treated them (yes, even when I was taking them to jail). Please try to understand the role of the Law Enforcement employees who really do care about the visitors in the woods/water. Lastly... I would not suggest that you follow the advice of a previous post telling people to tell the Ranger to stick his ticket. That may not end as pretty as the smile on your face when he posted it. . And last, the most ridiculous comment of your complaint was that the Ranger carried a gun!!! Wow, a police officer carrying a gun, go figure! Obviously you're ignorant to the laws of Pennsylvania. All DCNR Rangers carry a gun, they are sworn police officers. Maybe before you complain about something do a little research before hand!

Certainly you would expect the warning over a citation and I would imagine that most people would prefer this. However, would you be the one to file a law suite against the DCNR, the Ranger and anyone else who had knowledge of your actions? My guess is yes. It seems that there are a lot of people like you who want the world to leave them be, but are more than happy to tell the world “you owe me…” when you don’t make the right choice. Most DCNR Park Rangers are "cops". They must complete extensive training and are Act 120 certified. This is the same training that every municipal police officer must take. They carry firearms and are fully trained and have full law enforcement authority.

There are two types of Rangers in PA. A DCNR Ranger and a Park Ranger 1. The DCNR Ranger, which can be found in Parks and Forest is in fact a sworn State Law Enforcement Officer. I would suggest that you produce ID when asked when you are stopped for a violation. A Park Ranger 1 is not able to enforce laws, however showing a little respect is not a bad idea, if of course you expect the same in return. The Park 1 can issue "Courtesy Notices" and issue Tickets for Parking Violations. Either way, It is your responsibility to know the Laws and the Rules and Regulations. Most Rangers will treat you very respectfully as they should. Also remember though... When they are treated badly by most people, you can expect that they are less likely to be smiling when you give them a hard time. Respect is a two way street. WWWWWWWW wrote: <quoted text>

Yes you do need to show them your driver's license or another form of identification when they ask for it...even if you're just using a canoe. You tell a Park Ranger to "take his ticket and stick it", you'll quickly find yourself in jail.
