Are you talking about when they hired Michelle Obama to be vice president of community and external affairs?-- you know the point person for making the hospital's policy with regard to service to the community? I don't think anyone would argue that she would have a negative attitude toward people of color -- so are you saying that the University of Chicago has a positive attitude toward people of color? Or is it that you're just a nut who likes to accuse people of being racist without any justification? Mrs Obama was hired or promoted by Uof C as a pay back for all the earmark money Prez bought to U of C. David Axelrod helped put the plan together,to send vpoor and under insured patients to ill equiped clinics. Just go to the NY post.

Michelle Obama was paid over $300,000 a year to figure out a way for U of C to cut down its indigent patient load. So? Are you jealous a black woman was making more money than you could ever dream of making?

When a hospital gets bad press, it is usually a lawyer or other group with money to be made that convinces a "journalist" there is a story. Look at the coverage of the surgeons at Rush

Yes , we need the Medical "industry" to Keep us Healthy and Alive.
And ,with that in mind, the Fact is that PURE GREED and PIGGISHNESS is what Rules the Day in Health Care Facilities and Medical Professionals.
Why WON'T Providers Settle for what Insurance pays them?
Why do Senior Citizens, on Medicare, need to PURCHASE SUPPLEMENTAL Insurance and STILL GET A BILL?
How MANY TIMES OVER do they "PAY" for a Piece of Equiptment.
You can be sure ONLY ONCE.
Why when there is a Child Fighting for his/her life, do people ,including celebrities, have to RAISE FUNDS ,when the Hospital and Doctors SHOULD JUST SAVE THE KID????
Why does a PATIENT NEED TO FILL OUT THE "How Are We GETTING PAID" Clipboard before receiving treatment??
Putting the THUMB on the Medical World IS the Kind of CHANGE we need.
Tell Them what they'll make -PERIOD!
If they Don't like it, they can CHANGE PROFESSIONS.
After All, They did take the HIPPOCRATIC OATH( NOT the HYPOCRITIC)!

Reality Check wrote: <quoted text> Cook County is the hospital where the uninsured can get care for free. Other hospitals are not obligated to treat the uninsured. Actually, all hospitals are required to treat emergency cases, regardless of the insurance status of the patient. That being said, the state's horrendous track record in paying Medicaid bills is not helping this situation. We need a system of good, affordable health care that everyone can access and everyone can afford. The system we have right now clearly isn't working.

No city fees, free water, subsided bus service and other tax dodges. If the U of C is a business let it pay the going rate. I don't want to forget the free land grabs in Woodlawn, Kenwood, and South Shore. The citizens finacing the clouted and elitist again. Tax exempt status has nothing to do with it. The tax break is meager when compared to the cost of care that is rendered. Perhaps UCMC should go bankrupt and close altogether. Of course one can only imagine the outcry when a medical center in a slum closes down, yet no one considers that. The healthcare system in this country is broken and UCMC is not going to fix that.

It's not the medical profession that needs fixing, it's the healthcare system. Insurance does not always cover the costs that a medical center incurs, moreso with Medicare which barely reimburses anything unless you go into a skilled nursing facility. Dressing, tape, bandaids, pills all cost money. If you really need to point a finger perhaps the start should be with insurance and pharmaceutical companies for starters, then move on to our elected officials who line their pockets with contributions from these companies. In the end the insurers and pharma companies get their share, the politicians get their share, the medical centers take the blame and the patients ultimately suffer.

Every emergency department has to make decisions about whom to treat first, and whom to treat at all. There is no "system" and no "insurance" that will make the ED an appropriate place to care for the broad spectrum of ailments that presently come to the ED. As I read the information, the decision that was made in this care is rational and supportable. Rather than vilify the U of C and its medical center, the discussion ought to focus on how to influence people to use available resources more effectively. Simply because an ED cannot turn away a patient without a screening exam does not make it "free"--we all pay with compromised access to emergency care when we truly need it.

Mr Fish, I have no loyalty to the University of Chicago-- "elitist snobs," if you will, but you are confusing the term "patient dump." It is when you transfer a patient OUT of your hospital inappropriately. It is NOT the refusal to accept a transfer. The insolvency of so many hospitals in the country is not the fault of the University of Chicago. Lack of health insurance to so many Americans is not the fault of the University of Chicago. Hopefully Obama's long awaited health care plan will address these two issues. Fish wrote: U of C is patient dumping - I am personally aware of a young girl being refused transfer to that hospital because their "Transfer Service" plainly stated they did'nt accept the girl's insurance she was subsequently transferred to Stroger. They have their ER doctors tell you they can't accept transfers because you need to talk to their "Transfer Service". The service asks for insurance information and then they get back to you more often than not refusing the transfer for one reason or another. The University of Chicago elitist snobs expect that everyone is willing to pretend knowing a persons insurance status does not change their transfer acceptance. Someone should go to their transfer service and check the acceptance rate of well insured patients vs medicaid and uninsured. Is it because of greed or are they fighting for their economic survival. The answer lies in comparing their economic status to other hospitals and the answer is most likely they're trying to maintain their current economic status which is a lot better than other area hospitals who are actually fighting for mere survival. Many hospitals have closed up across the nation so something has to be changed. There are subsets of the population that is causing the rest of American healthcare to suffer a HUGE cost which can be dealt with..

Univeristy of Chicago is a private hospital not a public hospital!! Every private hospital makes their own decisions about which insurances they accept. Maybe you just dont understand this.
