This is the most blatenly racist article I've read to date in the Tribune. Blacks are no better than the whites were in the 60's when we practice this type of separatism. No matter how you spin it, this is racism at its core. Race relations will never improve if this behavior continues. Separation/racism should not be condoned by the Tribune no matter which side is doing it.

Yet if I did that as a white person, I'd be a racist. Go figure.

What a bunch of morons. This is why the black community fails. They always think of only themselves as if they are the only ones that matter.

I take that back; there is something else to say...
The Chicago Tribune quickly, and completely, should come out against this retarded - in the truest sense of the word - type of message. It is self-imposed segregation out of fear of progress and moving forward towards inclusion, rather than the 'comfort'(?) of exclusion.
There is no other reason on Earth that there is any reason to call attention to this gutless nonsense other than to condemn it, and vigorously so. It damned well better be on the Tribune Editorial Board's short-list of editorials to address, otherwise they are deemed complicit in helping further a disgraceful message.

As an Asian, I will be using this same concept but will be 'going yellow. Going forward, I will only buy my beer at asian owned liquor stores, drop off my dry cleaning at korean owned cleaners and my wife will only get her nails done at Vietnamese owned salons. Wait, I think we are already doing this.. WTF?

I'll bet every single one of you already buys at white owned businesses already and you don't even know it. There is nothing wrong with supporting your own. We all do it, whether it is a family member, friend or someone that looks like you. You are the racists by making this your excuse to puff up your chests and act like someone is doing something to you. You are pathetic.

how about instead of focusing on black owned business they only patronize locally owned businesses instead of big box stores. That way they can give back to their actually community, not businesses 18+ miles away. ps When you purchase a gift card the money isn't given to purchase location, it goes to the location it was used at. Gift card sales don't even get counted as profit until it's used.

"'Supporting your own isn't necessarily exclusive,' said John Anderson, a financial adviser ..." That's true. However, supporting ONLY your own, to the EXCLUSION of all others, is. I have nothing against what the Andersons are doing. They're just exercising the same right we all do to patronize businesses of their choice. But let's not try to spin it with doublespeak.

I tried a social experiment last year to not buy items made in China. I have nothing against China, and in fact lived there a few years. I was merely shocked at how everything I purchased was made in China. My experiment failed. It was impossible to buy shoes (even fairly expensive shoes), kids toys, nor any electronics. I would guess the couple in this article will give in the first time they need a hasbro or playschool toy for their toddlers (I suppose they could get really good at going to garage sales held by african american families. (sort of cheating) **Unless they just tell others what to buy their kids, but that is the same cheating that led me to quit my non-China purchase experiment after only 7 months.

An honest analysis reveals that such an attitude is racist. When the basis for decisions is based upon the race of another person, that is racist, regardless of what races are involved. Due to political correctness, some people are afraid to challenge racist attitudes when they are proposed by non-whites. A racist is a racist, whether they wear white robes or not. I wonder, though, why so few of the black-owned businesses noted within this story are located within the same neighborhood as they protagonists? The story fails to answer that question.

This is as ridiculous as the "Buy American" campaigns, or "Union Shop" campaigns.

I plan to join the Anderson's buy Black campaign. I commit to spending as much with Black-owned businesses as I possibly can, starting now. Thanks Tribune for publishing this article, my faith is somewhat restored in your journalistic integrety. I plan to shop at the grocery store they cited in the story this week and will check out their web site about those gas cards and every other Black-owned business they patronize. I don't care what anybody else thinks, this is the best thing Black people can do to achieve economic equality.
