One killed in wrong way crash

UNION COUNTY, NC (WBTV)- Deputies may charge the woman they say caused a deadly wrong way crash Friday night in Union County.

They say Frances Dunderdale had some sort of medical episode, causing her to drive the wrong way on Highway 74.

Dunderdale sideswiped two cars before crashing head-on into another vehicle at Presson Road, near the town of Wingate.

Eleazar Lopez of Monroe was killed. Two of his passengers are in the hospital.

Deputies think poor visibility may have also played a role in the wreck

Both Drivers In 485 Head-On Collision Charged With DWI
Wednesday, October 22, 2008 – updated: 5:45 pm EDT October 22, 2008

CHARLOTTE, N.C.-- A pickup truck and a car crashed into each other head-on on the Interstate 485 inner loop near the South Tryon Street exit late Tuesday.

State troopers said because both vehicles going at least 65 miles an hour, if not faster, the impact was at least 130 miles an hour.

Troopers said April Wallace of Charlotte was driving a white Chevy Silverado the wrong way on I-485 when she slammed into the red Oldsmobile Alero driven by Darrell Tarleton of Gastonia just before midnight.

Troopers said both drivers were intoxicated more than twice the legal limit. Wallace and Tarleton are charged with driving while impaired.

Wallace is also charged with reckless driving, driving the wrong way and failure to obey traffic signs.

Wallace, Tarleton and Tarleton’s passenger, Angela Scott of Kenansville, were all rushed to the hospital. Wallace and Tarleton did not suffer major injuries, but 37-year-old Scott is in critical condition.

A number of drivers said they saw Wallace’s truck during the nine miles it traveled on 485 before the crash. At least a half-dozen called 911.

“I’m on 485 out of Charlotte heading -- I don’t even know where I’m heading. My heart is pumping. There's a vehicle, truck, white pickup truck, heading the wrong way on 485, going like 80 miles per hour, just, just missed me,” one caller said.

Troopers said when the crash happened, there were no skid marks.

“Both vehicles either didn’t have time to react, or just weren't paying attention,” one trooper said.

Officials said the crash is much like several other recent wrong-way accidents.

"I can only attest it to the impairment of the alcohol on the person's judgment. I believe all the ramps are fairly marked pretty clearly with red and white signs that say ‘Wrong Way’ and ‘Do Not Enter’, and from my experience from being forced to drive the wrong way, it just feels funny to drive the wrong way up a ramp," said Sgt. Ben Miller of the Highway Patrol.

Last year, the North Carolina Department of Transportation considered making changes along I-485 because there had been several wrong-way drivers. But in the end, NCDOT engineers said there is no way to build a road to prevent drunken drivers from driving the wrong way.

NCDOT crews did go out Wednesday and check to make sure signs were in place and lights were working, but they found nothing amiss.

Investigators said Wallace was coming from a bar, but they wouldn’t say which bar. There’s no word on where the people in the other car were coming from.

Driver Killed, Three Hurt In Car Crash
Friday, November 14, 2008 – updated: 6:40 am EST November 16, 2008

UNION COUNTY, N.C.-- Police said a woman's medical condition caused a fatal wreck on Highway 74 east of Monroe Friday night. It was one of two deadly crashes among dozens of other, less serious accidents on roads in the Charlotte area.

Officers said Franci Dunderdale was driving the wrong way in the westbound lanes and hit another car head-on.

The wreck caused massive backups in all four lanes during Friday night traffic.

The driver of the second car, Eleazer Lopez, died. His two passengers, Nicholas Ceron and Daniel Cruz were taken to Carolinas Medical Center-Union with serious injuries. At last check, they were in fair condition.

Dunderdale was also taken to the hospital. She has since been released.

Officers said the accident backed up cars for five miles.

"It was pretty jammed up. I know at least as far back to Wingate," said Sgt. Mike Washburn.

Police won't elaborate on the Dunderdale’s medical condition that caused the wreck. The district attorney will decide whether to file charges.

Woman Drives Wrong Way Up Ramp, Ejected From Truck
Thursday, August 7, 2008 – updated: 5:20 pm EDT August 7, 2008

PINEVILLE, N.C.-- State troopers believe the woman who drove her pick-up truck, in reverse, the wrong-way up an exit ramp on I-485 was driving while impaired.

Right around 9:00 AM, a white pick-up spun across I-485 near the Highway. 51 exit. The driver, Linda Milton, wasn't even inside when it finally smacked into the median. Milton had already been thrown from the car. Troopers said she wasn't wearing her seatbelt.

Milton was running from her husband. He followed her up the exit ramp.

Troopers said the couple got into an argument at a nearby bank, and she drove off.

State police officers said Milton was under the influence of prescription pain killers. She was cited for driving while impaired, after refusing a blood test. Milton was taken to the hospital with head injuries, but she’s expected to be ok. Both husband and wife were cited for reckless driving.

Another example of the ignorant, vicious outlook carried by today's small minded person. We have people today who operate exclusively on opinion and emotion. Truth and justice is no longer considered the standard to follow.
This current population/culture just stinks and it will ultimately cause it's own collapse.

Just look at the current banking collapse. This is just the tip of the iceberg of a bigger civilizational collapse, which is really what this banking collapse represents.

So enjoy your opinions while you can because they are about to kill you.

Seeing as it has nothing to do with me, I cannot take credit for the video. Just like everything else in your life the truth just never comes into play does it "Melissa the Moron from Morganton"?

I'm sure that Ms. Dunderdale will get the due process of law afforded her, just like other people that have been involved in traffic fatalities.

And contrary to what some people believe, all "wrong ways" are not accidents. Nor are they all 2nd degree murder. Each case has to stand on its own.

On what's own?

What quota's? Mecklenburg sherrif's dept. has quotas on the number of wrong way fatalities it investigates each month?

Use what?

If you took a basic writing class, I'm sure that people might understand you more clearly.
