More billboards with the message “One nation, under God” are going up across North Carolina following fundraising efforts in Asheville.

The billboards are a response to signs put up in Asheville and five other North Carolina cities by the N.C. Secular Association referencing words from the Pledge of Allegiance.

Those signs – with the message “One nation indivisible”– have touched a nerve by dropping words “under God,” which were added to the Pledge of Allegiance in 1954.

“I think Christian people need to speak up,” said Dr. Johnny Tiller, interim pastor at Sunrise Baptist Church in West Asheville.“Too many Christians are closet Christians. They don't identify themselves, and they don't say anything.”
A secular association billboard on the Billy Graham Parkway in Charlotte was vandalized, and the words “under God” spray painted below the word “Indivisible.”

Protesters targeted another of the billboards in Wilmington.

“I'm afraid that some of the controversy and some of the things people are saying may cause our message to get lost,” said Jennifer Lovejoy, the association's Asheville spokeswoman.
“It truly was meant to be a message of unity, that our nation was founded on the freedom to choose, and we need to continue that,” she said.
The secular association's sign in Asheville is sponsored by the Western North Carolina Atheists.
Tiller said the signs must be answered by Christians.

“The other side, the unbelievers, however you want to refer to them, have a right to put up what they want to say,” Tiller said.“We have the right to express our beliefs.”

At Tiller's small church Sunday morning, the fewer than 70 people attending the service, raised $2,000 toward the billboards countering the secular message.

The organization, We Still Pray, which is made up of local churches, businesses and individuals, is coordinating the fundraising efforts.
We Still Pray formed 10 years ago in the wake of U.S. Supreme Court decisions prohibiting organized prayer in schools.

The organization's advisory board on Wednesday agreed to purchase more signs, said the Rev. Ralph Sexton, pastor of Trinity Baptist Church.

The group already purchased space on six electronic billboards. Those will remain in place through Thursday.

The new billboards carrying the same message will go up early next week across the state.
That includes two in Asheville, one in Charlotte, one in Greensboro, one in Raleigh, one in Wilmington and one in Winston-Salem. An eighth will go up on Interstate 26 in Madison County, Sexton said.

The group raised $17,000 this week, Sexton said.
“It's overwhelming. But what does that tell you?” Sexton said.“There's something pent up inside of people.… Maybe there is a majority that has been silent.”

Folks, this is just a new chapter of a long-lasting American debate.
