What is the fascination with this guy? Because he's from St. Louis Park? Good lord...This is a Big Ten job that pays a lot of money and has nothing but upside for a coach who wants to make a big name for himself. Why would we settle for someone simply because they're from here and so will be less likely to bolt? That's a total loser attitude that leads to nothing more than mediocrity and unfortunately speaks to the insecurity of Minnesotans.

if Trestman is the new coach. Never going to a game again. Just because he is from Minnesota, doesnt mean he knows S&^% about college ball. he was a disaster in his two years at NC State, why do you think NO other colleges want / wanted him!?!?

When exactly has ANY school or team hired ANY coach away from Minnesota? EVER? That is the least of your worries. Finding a competent coach with experience would seem to be the way to go. Mess this one up and it might be a Cubs like time until you see Pasadena for anything but a parade.

Trestman is a good coach, but I don't think he's the big name fans are hoping for. Cerrato might have been good with Lou Holtz, but he was everything that was wrong with the Redskins under Dan Snyder.

Mike Shanahan coached at the U. Have you heard of him SoCal?

For all the Trestman naysayers out there, here's a little food for thought: If you think guys like Saban at Alabama or Stoops at Oklahoma wave Harry Potter wands that lead to magical, undefeated seasons and national championships, you're sadly mistaken. Those two coaches have surrounded themselves with experienced, intelligent, coordinators, assistants, recruiters, and support staff that work within a proven, successful system. Trestman would be great offensively, especially developing the current QBs in waiting on the Gophers. Unfortunately, Maturi's major gaffe by hiring a high school coach whose real name was Professor Harold Hill now forces him to go after someone with "a name," who could turn out to be like another "music man" who simply used the program as a steppng stone to a job he really wanted.

Why would he want it now? MACturi passed on him in 2007, and then let Punkster drive the program into the pits of hell. Why would anyone want this job now????

Trestman has no head coaching experience. So hire him as the offensive coordinator. Because of his reputation in that area, that could serve as inducement for a big name head coach to come here. But they shouldn't hire anyone else without head coaching experience, I don't care who they are.

Trestman? The Gophers can do much better but they won't-not with Maturi and Brunnicks around.

Gophers my foot! He needs to replace old Wreck Titus with the Vikings. It's been a long time since their leader understood anything about offense.

SoCalGuy - His name was Lou Holtz, and Notre Dame hired him away from the U. If one certain Athletic Director would have shed his ego and retired as he should have, we might not have had to endure all this frickin frustration and humiliation. A local sports writer who claims to know it all, said that Holtz would have accepted the A.D. job and stayed here.

I have to laugh at all the comments. Especially the ones where it is said that Trestman has no head coaching experience. Offensive Coordinators are promoted all the time with no head coaching experience, duh! Brian Bilick & Jon Gruden to name two. Just like Tony Dungy was a defensive coordinator with no head coaching experience. Wow, all three won Super Bowls! I agree, the Gophers screwed up in 2007 when they passed on Trestman. Just think where the program could be. How a loser like Brewster got a new stadium for the team is beyond me because if he was such a good salesman, the Gophers would have had every blue chipper out there~ Trestman could be the savior of the program. Lets think about it for moment. He is 54 years old, what other dream job would he possibily use the Gopher job to get? He has won championships, so perhaps his love of the game and wanting to teach the game to youngsters is what will actually keep him in Minnesota for 5-10 year with a good solid competing team every year~ And he is from Minnesota~

NO TO TRESTMEN!!! You are kidding, right? Surrounded himself with experience, intelligent coordinators, assistants, recruiters, and support staff that work within a proven, successful system? Smoking wacky weed again are ya? The guy had 4 different offensive coordinators in 5 years.3 different defensive coordinators in 5 years. The coordinators that left, went to teams with actual leadership. A proven, successful system? Are ya kidding me? He came in with the run & gun system, then changed that to the wishbone and the following year tried the I formation offense. Brewster threw crap on the wall and hoped something would stick. It didn't work, it just stunk! The Gophers were successful on offense when they use to have a power running game. Please tell us what proven, successful system the team has now, Einstein~
