Maybe AD Joel Maturi should be pointed the road too, he gave looser coach a contract extension regardless of continued poor coaching. It cost us $600,000.

The only qualification for the next Gopher's coach is be a winner. Anything less is Minnesota like.

After reading Maturi's criteria for the next hire, I am truly scared. All this coach needs to know about Minnesota is we long for championship level college football team at the U of M.. The other crap is just fluff. He just fired fluff. Just win baby.

"And, quite frankly, they need to understand the challenges here and the positives. Embrace who we are, embrace the winter, embrace the challenge, embrace the major metropolitan area. You can't fight those — you need to understand those and embrace them."

Because our AD sure has all those skills. Clueless will beget clueless. I see no indication that Maturi has learned a thing from this debacle.

And Shooter, quit shilling for Trestman. He's not that good.

Maturi should fire himself and Lucia too. Since the loss to Holy Cross I'd say this is the worst stretch of Gopher hockey in my lifetime.

In 2003 the Gopher went 10-3 and had a new AD, Joel Maturi, entering his second year. The rest has been all Joel Maturi. His decision to not renew Mason's contract until it ran down to the last day, his decision to extend Mason's contract, his decision to fire Mason after the TT loss one month before National Recruiting Day, his decision to hire Tim Brewster who had never held a position of responsibility in coaching at any level, his decision to extend Brewster and now his decision to support wearing white helmets.

Now, I am suppose to support the "team"? The one that no longer even wears maroon and gold? My thanks to all the deep thinkers who have pushed us in this direction. Well done.

Actually, he is pretty good. Coached many successful college and pro players.

At least Glen Mason had a winning record. I thought that it was an ill considered knee-jerk reaction to fire him. As for Brewster, you'd have been better off with Goldie. Hire a search firn this time and tell your AD to stay out of the way. Go Gophers!

Give me a break. Hire the best coach. Who gives a flip if they understand Minnesota or have lived hear. Get over that someone needs to be from here to be a good coach.

If you really want that then hire Sid Hartman.

32-48 in the Big Ten is not a winning record.

Oh yeah, Maturi shouldn't be hiring this coach. He should be fired. If I lost my company 600,000 dollars it would be a no brainer.

The problem still remains and it is the AD. Gophers were a hockey power until Maturi and another inept coach got involved and it's been downhill ever since.
The basketball hiring of Tubby is a joke and time will prove that. KU is happy to have moved on.
Until Maturi is gone nothing will change at the "U"

Phooey! Please cut out the crap about needing to find a coach who "understands Minnesota"--whatever that means. What we need is a coach who can win consistently on the field, make sure that his players develop into responsible and contributing adults off the field, and restore our pride in Gopher Football. Beyond that he (or she for that matter) could be from Mars for all I care.

So Mason went 10-3--he had 2-1000 yard rushers and won nothing, plus he had the most demoralizing loss to Michigan (in recent memory) at the dome. The program shouldn't be about respectability--it should be about competeing year in and year out against the top programs in the Big 10---just like Iowa and Wisconsin do !! Could it be that we have the lowest budget for football of any school in the Big 10 ? The cards are already stacked against anyone who takes the Gopher job. How many coaches since Murray Warmath (who used to hang in effigy) outside the stadium in the early 60's? And what have they won ? And if you're a top tier division 1 recruit why would you come here instead of USC-Oklahoma-Texas-Nebraska-Mi chigan-Ohio State-Florida-Florida State-Miami. A decent recruiter may get a few, but you need 22/30 blue chip type players to compete and it hasn't happened in Minnesota since the early 60's !!!!!!!!!!

The new coach must also understand that there is no such thing as "Minnesota Nice," that a new generation of Gopher fans and plenty of old alums like me are fed up with mediocrity. The goal should be to win consistently and aim for a major bowl game, not the Music City, Insight, or Motor City. Don't say you're going to win a Big 10 Championship, just do it. The new coach must understand that it is unacceptable to repeat, ad nauseum, "we need to tackle better," we need to help the quarterback," "we need to do a better job as coaches." The new coach must understand that it is unacceptable for his players to kick the ball out of bounds to start games or following a score; to yell and scream at their head coach on the sidelines on network TV, to lack the discipline that causes them to land in jail and on the front pages of the news, resulting in distractions to his fellow teammates as they prepare to play the game. Brewster understood none of these points, and that is why he is no longer coaching a D-1 college football program.

Daily Horoscope for June 1

Scorpio

Watch out when dealing with other people early on, because it will be awfully easy to get bogged down in petty details. What's more, as the Moon moves into Scorpio later in the day, it's very subjective so you may find it quite hard to separate your emotions from your thoughts. This isn't a good day to discuss anything important, unless you want to go round in circles.
