Mexico's 'maquiladora' labor system keeps workers in poverty

By day, Sergio Martinez labors in a modern air-conditioned factory a few miles from the Texas border, a human cog in the global supply chain that helps build pickups and tractor-trailer cabs.

I always find it interesting to read reports that say the economy of a certain country is number number one in growth, or one of the richest countries in the world. Obviously they re not talking about 90% or more on the common people in these statistics and reports. They are all skewed.

I hear about China and how their economy is. But I know people from China. They are talking about the rich and the Country of China, not the average person on the street.

Here in Mexico it is the same. Their is so much starvation and poverty that it is in sharp contrast to the reports. Reports say that people are coming back to Mexico because the economy is so much better and their are more jobs available. That is if you like to make $7 to $12 dollars a day and starve at the sametime. Things here in Mexico are also quite expensive contrary to popular belief. People here go on shopping sprees to the border and El Paso to buy electronics and other things. Because overall things are cheaper in the USA.

Utilities here are off the charts compared to the incomes. The richest man in the world, Carlos Slim charges exorbitant prices for cell phone use.

In the USA jobs pay less now. Costs of things keep going up, as wages stagnate. Higher paying jobs are getting harder to find. Medical insurance is getting too expensive to attain. With many companies taking away the benefits. Houses are glutting the market and construction is slow. But not for the government.

In most countries, if you have a government job, whether it be City or State you can do better. These people seem to take care of their own. They have better job protection, better benefits and better retirement packages. They have a constant supply of money for these jobs at the expense of taxpayers.

If you go by the stock market it does not show the plight of the common man. It is all construed to the Rich and the people in Government.

As one person here in Mexico said if you want a better job in Mexico, it is who you know that has power that can get you a better job, and especially in Government. In many cases what you know does not get you far. Sometimes it depends on how much ass you are willing to kiss or the bribes you are willing to pay.

It is better to live in the USA even with all the problems they have. But it is getting worse daily. Especially with the greedy US companies shipping out the higher paying jobs to places like these low paying maquiladoras in Mexico. These people that work in these places are starving. Too much greed!
