Motorsports Notebook: Sickness couldn't derail Newman

You want to see Dale Earnhardt Jr. and Jeff Gordon, Tony Stewart and Bobby Labonte, all of them go head-to-head every week Ryan Newman knew he was getting a cold last Sunday as he prepared to race in the Daytona 500. But he didn't tell anybody. 'I never said the first thing to anybody because that changes their attitude about the driver,' Newman said Friday at Auto Club Speedway. 'If you say the car is loose or not driving well, they just think it's because you're not feeling good.' He wound up having to nurse his ailment through a week's worth of media appearances after his win in the 500, but felt like he was on the road to recovery after some rest after arriving in Southern California.
