Canadians call case of Harper allowing a Canadian woman held in Mexico jail for 2 years 'troubling'

A pair of parliamentarians return to Canada Thursday with Mexican officials' assurances they will try to "fast track" the court case of a Canadian woman imprisoned in a Guadalajara jail.

as Jailed Canadian woman calls MPs' visit to Mexican prison a 'dog-and-pony show'

8 hrs ago | The Canadian Press

- A Canadian woman imprisoned in a Mexican jail says a visit by a pair of Conservative MPs was nothing more than a "dog-and-pony show." A tearful Brenda Martin says she thinks Tory MPs Jason Kenney and Rick Norlock met with her for political gain now that her case is garnering more media attention. But she says she's not optimistic she'll be freed and begged Prime Minister Stephen Harper to "save my life." Kenney and Norlock met this week with senior officials at the Mexican attorney general's office, the foreign ministry and the prison to discuss the woman's plight. Mexican authorities have detained Martin, 51, since February 2006 on allegations of money laundering and participating in a criminal conspiracy in connection with an investment scam involving her former boss. Martin insists she knew nothing of the Internet scheme that bilked 15,000 investors out of nearly US$60 million - a claim her former employer has backed in a sworn affidavit.
