Trent University students had the chance last night to put their questions about climate change to the president of Guyana, a world leader who was recently named Time magazine's "Hero of the Environment."

Bharrat Jagdeo, who spoke to The Examinerprior to his question- and-answer discussion, said the public needs to put vocal pressure on world leaders to take immediate action on climate change.

His discussion, entitled Saving The World's Forests Today, was open to Trent students and members of the community. It was held in the Champlain College Great Hall.

Jagdeo, 35, is one of the youngest heads of government in the world and has led the country since 1999. Prior to becoming president he was finance minister.

Trent is the first of three universities he is visiting this week. He'll be at York University and University of Toronto today. The speaking tour is meant to raise awareness and spark discussion on climate change issues.

Jagdeo said the global economic crisis of the past year has put many environmental discussions on the back burner.

"Climate change has a much bigger systemic impact," he said. "The effects will be catastrophic."

While billions of dollars have been set aside to save banks and financial institutions to pull the world out of the recession, Jagdeo said the vault is usually empty when money is needed for climate change strategies.

"To some extent the financial crisis flew climate change out the window," he said. "But I think (the recession) has been used as an excuse.

"There needs to be public pressure and political will for there to be mass action."

Aggressive strict new targets to cut greenhouse-gas emissions need to be reached by all countries, he said.

He's hopeful the United Nations Climate Conference in Copenhagen in December will yield a successor to the Kyoto Protocol, a global greenhouse-gas treaty ratified by dozens of countries, including Canada, but not the United States.

For the most part, all world leaders have accepted the science of climate change and have acknowledged the devastating impact it will cause if not addressed, he said.

"It's less costly to do something now," he said.

But still the effects of climate change are happening faster than scientists originally predicted, he said.

"Polar ice cap melting was supposed to happen in 2020. It's happening now," he said.

Jagdeo said farmers in developing countries are experiencing the devastating impact by the loss of crops.

"The farmers in Guyana have seen a complete change in their weather pattern. They have never seen so much rain," he said. "We lose 10% of GDP from flooding. There are hectares of crops, such as rice, completely ruined."

Jagdeo said a cap and trade system allows for a greater incentive for renewable energy.

President Jagdeo has been committed in making the LCDS plan work, every Guyanese should take this into consideration and see the effort and assist in just supporting it...

Guyana continues to receive kudos internationally for its leadership role in the fight centered on its draft Low Carbon Development Strategy (LCDS) which hinges largely on forest preservation and avoiding deforestation.

Ecuador’s president is in London this week to promote a unique proposal: pay his country around $ 4 billion not to drill for oil in a pristine Amazon reserve.

Germany and Spain have expressed interest in Rafael Correa’s idea, which environmentalists say could set a precedent in the fi ght against global warming by lowering the high cost to poor countries of going green.

Correa is scheduled to meet with British MPs today to discuss the proposal.

The June 2008 deadline for this proposal to save Yasuní has been extended, but time is running out and the oil companies are poised, ready to drill.

“ This is the fi rst time the government of a major oilproducing country has voluntarily offered to forego lucrative oil extraction in order to help combat climate change,” Matt Finer, a staff scientist for Save America’s Forests and author of a study on Correa’s initiative, said.( Excerpt from: Al Jazeera)

The president of Guyana neds to address the Human Rights Violations, Cocaine exportation and concomittant corruption in his country.
That is a worthwhile step of change of climate in the country.

So you rather experience hurricane's rain storms, intense rain fall, floods, snow, the cold etc for a little electricity???

Preserving our forest and being against deforestation, this is what is gonna stair Guyana far from all the natural disasters you can possibly think about. In 2005 a little rain fell and we had a little flood that went down in minutes and you people were crying out, imagine if you had hurricanes to deal with!
