Beth,
I wish I could help you out more, but the only reason I can come up with is the cold long winter! But it's not like they're from California so I think they will be able to handle it if they do decide to move.
There are a thousand good reasons why Regina and Saskatchewan rocks! I've lived here my entire life I couldn't imagine moving away.
If you friends do decide to move, I suggest checking out my site www.JamesWruth.ca . it has a lot of information about regina and relocating. Plus, I'd be more than happy to make their relocation as seamless and stress free as possible.
All the best.

The indians here do the following:
1. throw dirty needles in my yard;
2. adult gang indian members ride their bikes in circles on my front lawn;
3. robbed me walking to the store;
4. robbed my child walking to school;
5. come to my door demanding heroin-even though I obviously don't sell any;
6. sell drugs openly on my street;
7. intimidate everyone in the neighborhood;
8. harrass everyone in the neighborhood;
9. smashed my vehicle windows in 3 times;
10. this has all happened when I have had no contact or dealings with them and there was no reason for this conduct.

Taxes and Utilities: higher than Vancouver.

Weather:-50 for months on end.

Mood: I am trying to keep upbeat.

I could go on..but what would be the point!

I am from vancouver and just temporarily moved to regina for a work term. I have to be honest, you cannot move from a well developed and large city to a small city like regina. You will be disappointed for sure. I am so tired of the laid back life here where nothing gets done. They took 3 months to repair a damn bridge and even streets! As well, there are plenty of bad drivers, not to mention incredibly bad parking! Transit is horrible in this city and you literally cant get around without a car. And also, transit doesnt work on stat holidays... never heard of that before or even experienced it. There is also no real recycling program for the residents here. Streets are horrible looking and houses are old. And for some reason, I see a lot of 20 year old moms! maybe because i live beside a school, but i counted atleast 10 highschool mothers walk past my house! thats horrible! I have never ever seen something like that in vancouver ever! I have no idea what these people have that influence them. Oh i forgot to mention, there is no nightlife.

I must say after reading several topics about Regina, I have no interest in moving to Regina at all.

I have good friends who are native and they also said to stay away from such areas. I'm not sure what the solution would be to aid the situation but maybe putting less attention on the natives might help. Crime rates a pretty high there. I like to live downtown in whichever city I live and willing to take risks... but in Regina it sounds guaranteed you will get robbed at some point. That's scary to think about.

I liked the idea of possibly going to a city that's relatively large and quiet. But being as small as it is and have so many problems, I don't think so.

If you want a friendly city, try Vancouver or Quebec.

Regina, hmmm... I just moved away from there:
1. High property tax:
For the services you get (and don't get), taxes are VERY high and they are on the way up. Water bills have gone up something asinine like 29% in the last 3 years and are set to go up another 30% in the next 3. The mayor, who was good at one point, has obviously recently had a brain aneurism as evidenced by his most recent idea: In order to do a recycling program, residents are going to have to pay a user fee to have garbage/recycling pick up.
2. Unaffordable housing
Regina, and SK in general used to brag about how affordable housing is, but that is no longer the case. Now, if you want a new bungalow in a newer area you will be paying $400K or more. And keep in mind the above, that you will be raped every year for property tax. And garbage pick-up in the near future.
3. Native problems:
Someone put it best already when they said that there is a "tension" in the air in Regina with respect to the native population. How should I put this. In Regina... the natives suck. If they aren't passed out under a tree surrounded by empty bottles of beer and lysol, they are stumbling back and forth between the nearest Shopper's drug mart or Liquor Store. The more energetic of the bunch can usually be found stabbing eachother with either a home made shiv or a screw driver of some variety. They have made a large section of the core area in Regina what the police refer to as a "no go zone." A personal friend of mine recently suffered a home invasion in which she fended them off by wedging herself against her bed and the door to her bedroom until the cops finally showed up. Incidentally, despite breaking into her home and attempting repeatedly to break down her bedroom door they weren't charged with home invasion (maybe they were just wanting to borrow some sugar?). Another friend of mine who played on my soccer team came here from New Zealand experienced North Central hospitality. His stay in Canada ended shortly after he decided to attend a little soiree in a North Central, where he was stabbed repeatedly and almost died. The mayor won't or can't do anything about this situation because he is a spineless coward. He recently made North Central Regina an "urban reserve" (because nothing represents Native culture like city living). Year after year he puts on this ridiculous show of outrage when Macleans comes out with their "Worst Neighbourhood in Canada", which is always North Central.
4. Road construction:
Summer in Regina, if you drive, is retaaaaaarded. In spring, when the ground finally thaws (July in Regina), an army of road construction crews f***ing dismantle every major road in town making it virtually impossible to get anywhere in a decent amount of time. This wouldn't be so bad if they finished say... 3/4 of the way through the summer, but they don't stop until snow flies. Also, if the road construction crews don't actually have time to dig up a road, their favourite thing to do is put down pylons so that a 3 lane road is choked down to a 1 lane road. No one with a hard hat is seen for weeks, but the pylons stay up and traffic is f**ked for that time.
5. F**k All to do:
Your options are:
- go drinking at a bar
- go drinking at a rider game
- go drinking at the casino
- go drinking at someones house
6. Jobs:
Your choice is to work for either the federal government, the City of Regina, or any number of Crown Corporations. Good luck getting in there though (nepotism) and if you do you will probably just bolt immediately.
7. The Riders:
Local sports team. For some reason, like a mob on the riot, virtually everyone in town has gone bat s**t crazy over the roughriders. I think it is directly attributable to the fact that watching them is about all there is to do in Regina. People who don't LOVE the riders are looked down upon and ostracized immediately. Actually, if you don't get s**t faced every weekend, you are looked down upon too.

The comments are unbelivable but true for the most part. I am First Nations and the truth is the rest of the population, unions ie teachers, health , policing etc..are all dependent on federal dollars which they get for the Indians and their problems, so we have the highest incarceration, foster care abductions,etc. cause everyone except the business owners are dependent on our pain,Billions of dollars come into the province to help us poor indians but they don't give us jobs, keep picking up our kids and throwing everyone in jail.however there are people who are truly disgusted with this type of governing.(blame the NDP they write better grant proposals than business)believe it or not the Saskatchewan party has hired more First Nations people and their is a genuine change in some attitudes we need more good people to come to our province to join the ones allready here!

Um,obviously from the posts you can see no one in Regina can keep things cute and funny.I know I can't either.You can't seem to relax and laugh in Regina unless you're a jerk laughing at the expense of someone else.Lots of bullies in Regina.And every race of people are racist,the racism is a vicious cycle going round and round between all the races,it can feel very intense.There really is alot of tension.Street harassment is very high.There is way to much traffic for a small place,and way too many people for such small shopping centres.Ugly gang graffiti all over.Lots of angry people.Lots of drunks.Very noisy place,even in residential areas.Has the highest rate of crime,gangs,domestic violence and diseases like Diabetes and MS.The medical system is pathetic.Yes,there are nice people but the many nasty people stand out more since it is a small place.

Okay first thing that's one thing about Regina everyone thinks there bloody right. And unfortunately I have lived here from b.c a few years ago. They all for some reason hate outsiders. They think they no every damn thing about b.c. They have to be the most retarded people to think this is a good place to live. If they want to brag about it Regina they can brag till they drop. One other thing so many people are so fucking fat it's not funny. I swear I thought I saw a ten ton walrus, no it was just a native women

I moved to Regina last summer. I did not see lot of negative things except that the winter and road conditions are really bad.

Further, I could not do some activities such as martial arts (group learning and practice), hiking, scrambling etc. Here is very boring; I am trying to learn something else such as horse riding or golfing, which I believe they are something you can do here.

I do not know racism but my child did tell me he and his mother went to a shopping center and someone asked them to leave this country because we are asian;Personally, I found most people did not believe I have a job or be qualified enough to live here becuase I speak english with a strong foreign accent. At meantime, I found many people did like me becuase I could be of assistace to them and their businesses.

As somebody mentioned probably most jobs are from provincial government, municipal government or crown cooperations. If you get an offer like this it should be fine, still, keep in mind you are hired because your qualifications but when you come here you will find most of your colleages have less than 20% of your qualifications but they got much better pay and much higher positions and you must work with some idiots and be ready to waste your time to teach them how to do their jobs. Most of them like politics more than to get the job done.

It is frustrating sometimes I would like to say. As an immigrant and having been living in many great cities in Canada, I do not really like here but I would like to follow dollars and opportunities. That's all about.
