Tackling Quebec's algae problem 53 minutes ago

“We are saying, 'The regulations are already in place...Give us time to apply them and absorb the cost of doing so. Let us analyze the results and then we'll see if we need more.'”

Most Quebecers have long returned home from cottage country and the summer's worst environmental problem is quickly fading from the headlines and from our collective consciousness. via Montreal Gazette

Pretty Soon We'll Be Back Up to Cottage Country &
then this problem will Be Fresh Again on our Minds

There was a one-day meeting in Ste. Adele that was to bring together lake ecosystem experts, municipal and provincial politicians, river and lakeside cottage and homeowners, the provincial farmers union and some regional environment groups.

Summer 2007 maybe officially over, but the cyanobacteria, more commonly known as blue-green algae, is still blooming hardily in other parts of Canada too.

At last count, 156 of Quebec province's lakes and rivers were affected.

That's up from 50 in 2005 and 107 in 2006.

This is not a new problem.

The algae has always been present in Quebec,

but over the last decade,

it has flourished out of control scientists say,

because of an excess of nutrients in the water,

mainly phosphorus ( which maybe also be Coming by the Winds Too ), nitrogen and carbon.

Unless action is taken quickly,

the problem will only get worse, experts say.

The minister has promised a new plan of action will emerge from the meeting Last Year...

I agree with controlling the use of phosphates. It is just one of many triggers of the blue green algae. Actually we had developed a cure for the bluegreen algae crisis, it works every time, but the science is not peer reviewable. We apply an invisible field to the water without adding any chemicals or elements. We can do this in pipes or to whole rivers and lakes, there is no effect on marine life. jhsbusiness@yahoo.com
