Similar old stories (about hidden towns) are widespread all over Europe.

In Estonia, such stories are often related to pagan worshipping (and sacrificing) on local sacred hills during the summer solstice. The stem / root related to such activities and places is/was 'leto / litha / lietuva / leden / leego / lidna / linda / linn', nowadays having different meanings of summer / summer solstice / fire/fiery, castle-hill, hill which became the birthplace of a city, town.

One had to attend a summer solstice gathering at the same place for 7 consecutive years, and on the 7th year the hidden city revealed itself.

In such stories, the city is usually hidden on top or inside of the hill.

There are other stories about vanishing towns unrelated to hills, but related to lakes.
There are other stories about traveling lakes.

One of the placenames of Tallinn is Lindanise / Lidnan-ase, one interpretation of which is 'a hill which is a place of a town'. The hill is Toompea hill. In other legends, Toompea hill is the grave of Old Kalev - the father of the estonian epic hero Kalevipoeg / Son of Kalev. The hill was created by Kalev's wife Linda.

"Lake Svyatovskoe in the Tambov region that likely is of meteoritic origin. They say that it is bottomless (ropes with a load never get to the bottom), and that many fishermen found their death there."

Svyato (in russian)= syvä/ süva / sügav / sügavik / süvik (in estonian / finnish)= deep / abyss

The 'deep' is deep both in the direct and indirect (incl. meditational) meaning.

sügav uni = deep sleep

River Svir / Syväri.
Lake Syväri.

Water has always been a holy element to humans or is this writer saying russian water is even holier than the Red sea. LOLZ. Although russians and baltic-finns used it in banya and sauna because its healthy that way.
