If you haven't heard by now, effective immediately across the nation, US Xpress is getting rid of all their Solo Driver's by forcing them to team with someone, or clean out their trucks and go home. And, to add insult to injury, they are no longer training students anywhere until after the 1st of the year, but there will be no Student Orientation west of the Mississippi from now on.

Hmmmm, that's funny... when I visited the US Xpress Medway OH terminal recently they had orientation going on for new hires. I'm a Solo Dedicated Driver for them, over 4.5 years running. Nobody's forcing me to team up. I saw students being trained in early January 2009 on the Medway practice lot. They did paycuts to upper management, and had hourly employees work 4 less hours per week. Drivers still earn the same. Talk about gossip. US Xpress opened up new terminals in Ellenwood GA, and Olive Branch MS over the past year. Nice too. Now last year in the fall they were offering $5000 bonuses to teams who both signed up with HAZMAT endorsements. July 1st 2008 they started 2 cents per mile extra HAZMAT load pay. USX bought new International Tractors late last year in addition to Petes, Volvos, Kenworths and Freightliners. Hmmmm. It seems that tadfw needs a hardhat cuz the sky is falling.

I work for US Xpress in the OTR long haul division and I run team. I will tell you when I was hired in April 2008 that I had to sign a paper saying I would only run team with the company. I went to US Xpress because I wanted to run team in newer vehicles with low mileage. I also knew that my wife might possibly run with me at some point so the Automatic trucks made that easy for her to adapt to truck driving. I know they are not hiring in the western region as of now FEB 6, 2009. They reduced pay on the upper management level people, the drivers pay is the same. I have been getting my Team with Hazmat bonus pay every 90 days as promised and my mileage pay increased as well. From what I am told at the Colton, CA. yard hiring will resume in March-April time frame. Also I am riding in style in a brand new 2009 Peterbuilt with less than 100k miles. Myself of my team has put every mile on this truck. US Xpress has been a great company to work for in my opinion. I work hard for them and they in return work hard for me. They did make some of their western regional solo drivers team up because they simply did not have enough freight to support all of the Western 11 drivers out there. My trainer runs OTR solo and has not had a service interruption at all. I thought it was pretty nice of the company to at least offer the drivers who were western 11 a chance to team up before being laid off. Oh well I guess I have a different perspective on having a job when 7.7% of the country is out looking for work.

My brother-in-law signed on with them two years ago. He was informed he could driver alone.
His first time out with the trainor he had to deal with drama of the guys personal life then was abandoned in Texas.
His first time out he was dispatched to go pickup a truck that a disgruntled driver left at a truck stop when he quit. He found feces spread all over the interior of the cab and trash throughout.
The dispatcher wanted him to drive over 500 miles in that condition. Thank god he refused and said he would take it to the closests detail shop, but wasn't going to take it any further in that condition.
Needless to say, after that experience, he was told he needed to become an owner operator for US Xpress and he was going to purchase the truck he just put in the shop. He refused. After that, he was taken off driving as a single and it became mandatory to drive as a team. That worked out well until the other driver fell off the truck and broke his shoulder. Of course the company only wanted to give him a bus ticket to get home to see a doctor...
After that, it only got worse. Sitting for days waiting for loads at truckstops and too many other horror stories for this forum. Thank goodness he finally left when his last check was for a little over $200 after being gone for four weeks.
Slave labor, I say. No wonder there's a driver shortage. When companies like this treat their employees like dirt, they are going to have a heck of a time when CSA 2010 comes into effect. I wonder if the shareholders are aware of the practices of US Xpress? I think if they did, they would pull up stakes and put their money into a company that has more respect for their employees.

Usx is a terrible company mismanaged from top to bottom. From low wages to no hometime it amazes me that they are in business. Whatever you do don't work here.

How can you tell if a recruiter is lying to you? His lips are moving! That would be a funny joke, except it is true and NOT FUNNY!

is there any way you can drive a tractor trailer without going OTR. i've been seeing a lot of bad stories about OTR and i worked OTR for 3 months but i left to pursue a different job.
ive applied to Pepsi and i got to a face to face interview but didn't get the job. one pepsi driver told they hired with just a cdl a.
do you have to do otr for 1 year to get a local job or can you get lucky with a local company.

You don't have to drive OTR to get a local job as long as you have some type of experience. Just ask alot of questions to whatever company you decide to go with and remember you might be working as long of hours for less pay than an OTR driver who has weekends off.

Wow, we're a team and was with US for 4 years. We should have stayed. We fell for the "grass is greener on the other side" routine. We drove for another LARGE co. out of Joplin and was quite disappointed. The equipment was very unreliable. We came off OTR to drive local on the southeast coast. Hubby found work, I have not. We are excited about returning to USX. Pay was never an issue, the equipment was top-notch and those still remain my main concern. "We're gonna lock up the house and hit the road!" Somehow I don't think it will leave our blood. We can all b!t<# and gripe all we want to, but trucking is trucking. WE ALL know the drill. The grass may be greener...but it's still just as hard to mow. Good luck drivers, and everyone b-safe out there!, 10

I first started driving 20 years ago and it was with a very large company lasted there 3 years worked for an owner-op for the last 15 until he went out of business, now where I live trucking jobs a scarce so basically u.s. Xpress was one of my few options I have been here 2 yrs now and I expected the worst but it has been amazing I get home every weekend at least for a 34 hour restart, no problems with miles or respect. When I first started they gave me an older volvo that was always in the shop I told my fm something had to change or I was gonna quit 2 weeks later I was put in a brand new 2001 freightliner. I have never been asked to lease or team although the do call quite often wanting me to train. One thing you have to remember is It's all in how u make it. You get nowhere with a bad attitude (not saying that you all did) just most drivers walk around with a chip on there shoulder. Its like a good marriage a lil give and take. Best of luck to you all
