U.S. offers new cleanup jobs at ex-nuclear plant in Piketon

Full story: Columbus Dispatch

The U.S. Department of Energy is offering hundreds of new nuclear site cleanup jobs to southern Ohio workers and a second chance for USEC to win a $2 billion federal loan guarantee after department officials today said a planned uranium enrichment plant in Piketon isn't yet technically or financially ready.

Well I hope to see this project move along sooner rather than later, but later seems to be inevitable now. I am not familiar enough with the project to know whether it would have been financially feasible, but we need to start projects like this very soon if we are to have any chance of reducing fossil fuel emissions while still maintaining the same quality of life.

The dept of energy is offering hundreds of cleanup jobs. What about the 5ooo jobs that would have been created? OBAMA would rather give the project to the French.

Let's see, 500-700 permanent jobs that will last a generation or more or 900 temporary ones that will last 3-4 years(meant to end just as Obama is reelected). A 2 billion dollar investment as opposed to a 45 million dollar investment. Isn't the gov't responsible for spending that money to clean up the site regardless? The math above ain't all that hard to figure out. Sounds like your local and state politicians are attempting to sell you a bill of goods as well. Hope you all remember this when the next elections come around but I have little hope you will.

Good grief, how much more damage can these losers do? This is totally outrageous. I hope those people in Southern Ohio who voted for their native son for Governor and this snake oil salesman we have for President are taking notes on how much Obama and Strickland have done to "help" them.

It truely is refreshing to see I am not the only one who sees through this sham. Obviously, this $$pitance$$ trade for the demise of USEC is the DOE's way of saving face. They are the ones making this incredibly horrific choice of giving the 2B loan guarantee to the French (Oh and they will since USEC and the French are the only 2 contenders). We will be at their mercy for fuel just as we are to the middle east for oil. The DOE is a disgrace to the government and to the country. Look up treason in the dictionary; it says "betrayal of country". Everyone of them should be brought up on charges for this heinous act. Trust this, the ACP IS BEYOND shovel ready, USEC HAS proven the technology and USEC has sold >50% of the production from the unfinished plant (can you say financial stability). I see this as nothing more than politics at work; Someone in government will get rich and it will cost the american workers in southern Ohio their livlihoods. That's about as polite as I can be at the moment.

Your headline makes one think at first glance that the DOE is really doing something to help the people of southern Ohio. Why not emphasize the lost jobs and broken promises. Where are all the union big shots when you need them?

Keep electing dumbocrats to office, and keep sending jobs out of the state and country. Not to mention our tax dollars, lose jobs, lose tax income, raise taxes for those that are left until they are gone too. Don't work, don't worry be happy! Obama will take care of us all, just like he is with health care, which we won't need since we won't be able to eat!

"Cleanup" jobs, eh? That's total horse crap. Those "cleanup" jobs are low-paying, dead-end jobs. You literally work yourself out of a job. When the "cleanup" is done, where do you go? Back to the unemployment line, that's where.

Ohio doesn't need any more dead-end jobs. We need good, well-paying jobs that utilize a skilled workforce and provide stable, long-term employment. That is what drives an innovative, technologically advanced economy. The enrichment plant would have provided those. Temp jobs for nuclear janitors won't.

Then again, Ohio voted for Obama and you reap what you sow. After all, are you telling me, this isn't quite...

Hopenchange?(only if you are hoping for unemployment)

Change You Can Believe In?(only if you believe in going broke)

Yes We Can?(go on unemployment)

Well, you people voted for this clown, now you're stuck with him. Deal with it. And I hope you find a lot of "change" while on unemployment.

Obama wants to do for the price of electricity what OPEC did for the price of oil. The Obama Energy Tax will increase the price of electricity especially in states like Ohio that rely upon low cost coal for electricity production.

In Spain, which has been aggressively pursuing renewable energy for over 10 years, windmills double the price of electricity and solar panels increase the price six fold. Further for every "Green Job" created, 2 jobs are lost in other industries as the high price of electricity drives jobs overseas. 50,000 jobs were created in Spain at a cost in government subsidies of $500,000 per job. Of these only 10,000 are permanent; the rest are related to the construction of additional windmills. Since the Spanish government can no longer afford these subsidies, the 40,000 "Green Jobs" have been lost.

Uranium enrichment produces long term high paying jobs that will provide fuel for low cost nuclear power. Not that it makes any difference, but nuclear power does not produce CO2. Why don't the Greens want low cost clean energy? It sins against their religious convictions.
