There are two things untrue in this article.
1. Only one of the men who killed James Byrd was from Jasper. The other two were from elsewhere.
The one from Jasper was little more than a kid who was exposed to the others in prison.
2. The fence in the cemetery had been down for a long time...it was still there, but not standing. There was a group who went to the cemetery, put a section of the fence back in place and held a photo-op.
Also, the people of Jasper solved that crime immediately and held those responsible accountable.
And for the record...the crime was committed out on a rural county road, not in town as some have reported. To be fair, though, they did pick James Byrd up on a city street.
IMHO...the only racism alive in Jasper is of the reverse kind. And the EEOC evidently agrees because six white police officers have been given approval to sue the city because of the actions of the black City Councilpersons who hired an unqualified black man as Police Chief. That man then either fired or demoted 4 white officers.
And it didn't have to happen that way. There were two highly qualified black candidates passed over for the job.
But, the citizens of Jasper took care of this problem, also. They recalled two of the councilpersons. They overwhelmingly stood behind the Mayor in a recall vote. They then refused to put the old councilpersons back in office.
Now, the unqualified Police Chief has been fired and a retired Chief has been put into office as an interim choice. The search will begin again for a new chief.
Remember this...the population of the City of Jasper is about half black and half white with a small pecentage of other races represented.
