New owner of SouthBay Pavilion plans movie theater

Sounds like Fred Sands has the money to be able to ignore the promoters of the Boulevards and Mayor Jim Dear. I hope we haven't sold bonds yet. Right on, Fred Sands.

Thanks for the article. Are the lights on?! Maybe now the City Council will realize that "The Boulevards" was a bad deal to begin with. These officials has paid out all of our tax dollars to a FARSE OF A DEAL, a trash dump, a toxic and explosive burial ground. With all the fake bells in whistle Tetra Tech and LNR claims they have in place, no one WITH ANY REAL BUSINESS SENSE will WAIST, REPEAT WAIST their money.

Thank you Fred Sands for saying what the few citizens of Carson who were not afraid to speak up has said.

Contrary to what our "City Leader" has said about the few citizens who care enough to speak up; we do want our city to "go foward", but without waisting tax payers dollars and causing a lost to the city in terms of money and possible lives.

Mr. Sands can we please try to encourage in addition to the movie theatre the following:
Bed Bath & Beyond, Trader Joe's, Red Lobster & please try to encourage another major department store to come back.

Once last request (I feel you are listening), please DO NOT RENEW the lease of the "1 Dollar Book Store". This is an embarrassement to the Mall and the residents of Carson. WE DESERVE BETTER.

This is more evidence of the MONEY PROBLEMS Hopkins and crew (LNR) have. These people are desperate for money, always have been. They came into this deal stating, where will we get the money? Some people pay attention to channel 35 and the showing of the "joyful" ground breaking ribbon cutting ceremony. Guess what, you can bet they will come to Carson City Council again. What will the city put up for collateral this time......City Hall, the Community Center is already gone. The sad thing is, this may happen because of pay to play. These people who claims they are representatives of the city (people) are only representatives of their own pockets. Their decisions are based on who will fund their campaign.

They came into this deal stating, where will we get the money?

Meaning they came into "The Boulevards" deal, knowing they did not have the money.

The city fathers of Carson love mobile home parks (rent control - then "buy out" rules of the worthless coaches if closing a park). How about a city run mobile home park on the old landfill?

City pays to move the old coaches to new park. Frees up the old parks for landlords to do whatever with property: Condos, house, apartments, or commercial (NEW property tax base for the city!).

I agree and oh how I agree with Money Problems, Lights On, Yesss and Blow the Whistle!! Our leaders will just keep throwing money at the pile of dirt and in return someones pockets will probably be filled. Carson is known for "pay to play" and it continues the games.
We'll be here to tell you - "told you so".
I really doubt that Mayor Dear will be able to play games with the likes of Mr. Sands.

I don't think this is "trash talking", Mr. Graves. Money talks and Mr. Sands' reputation is not just the typical small time, local cities dealings type of action. This man is big...I say LNR have to now compete against the "Giant" and not just the local Carson residents "Goliath".

I would love to meet with Mr. Sand's, as it is reported that he goes out into the community he is investing in and ask the residents what they desire. This is a very smart business move. This will ensure the customerbase necessary to keep his profits flowing.

Mr. Fred Sands don't have to trash talk because he is "one of the TOP 25 CEOs OF THE DECADE'.......and known for being 'one of the most inspiring success stories in real estate history."

As a Carson, CA resident I wish him continous success and welcome him!

For what? i used to go to the mall as a kid, worked there for several years as a young teen-to-adult. FINALLY there are a couple of places worth patronizing (old navy, children's place, etc.) but outside of eating glorified fast food at lunch time, there is nothing of any real QUALITY. not every black man likes to wear a wanna-be gangster t-shirt or gaudy suits (orange, purple, whatever).
i'm hoping for the best because for years, it was little more than a spruced-up indoor swap meet. that's why everyone ran to lakewood, del amo or the galleria.

hey i would love a theater and more eating options. that'd be terrific. but, no offense, what's the need for a multi-level parking garage. there's not enough people that go to the mall yet for any need to construct such a blight. i always find parking without any problem and am never that far away. even i usually get lucky when i go to ikea on the weekends (which i avoid if at all possible).

besides, a little walking doesn't hurt.

If Sands is right and the development isn't built there will not be sufficient property taxes to pay the $120 million in bonds the city is going to issue. Sands is probably right since the developers asked the city to front the money for remediation since they could not get a bank to finance the project. The city had to pledge the community center to completely fund the developers request. Only councilmembers Santarina and Holmes expr ssed concern and asked for additional information. Dear, Raber, and Gibson pushed the vote. I guess Holmes and Santarina were right to express concern. This sounds like what happened in Gardena under Dear's brothers mayorship.

No wonder the council needed a utility tax to keep the city going. With this kind of leadership you can kiss the utility tax good bye and Gardena here we come!

FINALLY! however, carson residents have seen more than their fair share of big talk from developers or city honchos and see nothing back up the smoke blown up our a s s. remember it was years ago when there was talk of magic opening a theater but the city was scared of people from compton coming over. and let's not even bring up the stadium issue and how the city looked like total idiots, though i'm glad that didn't go through.(REALLY, AN NFL STADIUM IN CARSON??)

meanwhile, a nice little shopping center is built just north of the 91 freeway in compton with big retailers and a restaurant.

either build a nice outlet mall on the dump site or nothing at all and bring the theater and another decent restaurant and shots to southbay. how would a brand-name outlet (not a swap meet) mall not work. there isn't one any closer to this part of so cal than the citadel.

i've lived in carson most of my life and know the city for what it is. most of us are solid, working class, law-abiding citizens who just want a few more options for our spending dollar so we don't have to run off to other nearby cities.

i'll believe all this when i see it.

A few typos don't matter, what matters are the statements. I too would like to see the SB Pavilion developed more.

You know most of these people sound like those idiots who belong to the Concerned Citizens of Carson. Rita Boggs, Robert Leslie, Diane Thomas, Vera (don't hit me, Bail me out) DeWitt, Mike (loser mayor) Mitoma and Pat (thin me out) Helerude. They are opposed to everything with no suggestions for something in our future.

I believe the Boulevards project will be built. The site is already taking shape. And, by the way, Don Dear didn't break Gardena, Mas Fukai did along with Steven Bradford. Don didn't have the majority vote. Our city council is doing the right thing. Mr. Sands sounds like he knows what he is doing. One thing though, Steve Hopkins is also a mall expert who knows what he is doing. Just look at the changes there. Also the people I spoke of were always opposed to a hotel on that site.

I was a young man when I bought my home in Carson. I agree, but our current council members never voted in favor of an NFL stadium, just the Home Depot Center, which is great for our city. The NFL stadium was Sweeney's baby and he is in prison.

I'm tired of having to drive to Redondo or Torrance just to get some basic shopping done or watch a movie! It's ridiculous. I love living in Carson and I have always considered the only inconvenience.

I'm excited to see future developments. North Carson in general is on the verge of becoming a great neighborhood!

Redondo and Torrance would also be happy if you did not have to leave Carson to do your shopping.
