I don't see how that remark could ever be considered funny. It does however, illustrate how some people down south in Virginia view the northern suburbs as some how being a "different" part of Virginia. It's as if to say there are "true" Virginians. It's part of the same problem as some people think some Americans are more American then others.

It's way past time for these politicians to just make the case for their own qualifications and stop trying to divide the country and disparage other Americans for their own political and personal gain.
