It's only a matter of time, the mill will close. Who really cares if 1000 rednecks and their families are out of work. Those rednecks don't give a hoot about anyone except themselves, as evidenced by their insistence that if you don't love the biggest polluter in WNC then you can just go somewhere else. Screw them, shut it down for the rest of us.

maybe we should close the paper mill and start a nuclear power plant, with a dump site next to it. Maybe kids would grow feet on their heads. all those empty buildings would be ideal for nude bar, or a meth lab. will the madnes ever stop, no.

It's already slated to be ramped down in 2009. It will be a shell of its former self. Many of the top management are bailing out of that place. The writing is one the wall. Next year you'll see 900 workers scurrying for low-buck jobs and rampant crime in Canton. At least it might smell better.

Where did you hear that the mill was to be shut down in 2009? Could you post a link to where you found this information or explain whom you heard this from?

Thanks!

One portion of a community should not taint the entire communities air and water to make a living. Fundamentally it is wrong. Only 1000 people/families to rely on the mill for income and the whole community suffers. It should be a crime. Close the mill NOW!! I'm not sure of the cancer rates historically, but i know in the past Canton, NC was known as "Widowville", due to the high cancer related death rates of husbands

Fortunatley I dont live within city limits so the smell is only a factor if I choose to do shopping in Canton. Waynesville and Asheville are near by. 20-25min. Overall I would not want to live any where else. Haywood county is Absolutely beautiful, but the air and water pollution has to go. UNC put out an report recently about the air quality in WNC and it was scary. They were linking the increase in depression and suicide in the area to the mill SINCE the millions of dollars of upgrades to the air and water filter systems. As a community we need to attract the tourist dollar and the first start will have to be closing and cleaning up the mill.

To keep relying on the mill for income is lazy. There, I said it. The fact that report after report comes out stating the obvious facts regarding unacceptable air and water quality and the town STILL does nothing to think of alternative revenue sources is absolutely ridiculous. How about the outdoor recreation industry??? Canton is a visually stunning place in a proximity to natural attractions that other towns would die for. The potential for Canton is unbelievable, but the unwillingness to break away from the mill that has been around for 100 years is strangling it.
Its like a girlfriend/boyfriend that you know is not good for you. Don't just stay in the relationship because its familiar folks.

Hello, the people in canton are just like any other hard working person, blame the mill, not the people wanting to support their families....There is new technology that would reduce the polluntants in the air and water, but YOUR government wont make the big companies change it. Or if the government makes it too strict they pack up an pollute china....the world is round it would still come back to us. How much paper do you use a day?????

My family has lived in Clyde and Canton since before the mill, and nobody has ever heard of this "widowville" BS

Sadly people who make up crap like this get taken seriously by some.
