Those of us that are not teachers didn't go onto a public post and cry about what some news station did on your profession. If you all just went about your normal day just like the rest of the world this entire post would be a mute point.
There weren't a bunch of Cops, Firefighters, Sanitation workers, Carpenter's, Lawyers, Doctors, Nurses, Physician Assistants, Secretaries, Administrative Assistants, Engineers, Railroad workers, Restaurant waiters, Chiefs, bartenders, Computer technicians, politicians, dog catchers, DPW workers, State workers, County workers, Local Govt workers, strippers, hookers and cigar salesmen that came onto a public post to say how insulted and disrespected, or that they dont get the respect from anyone, oh always me crying and whining.
The only profession that did that was TEACHERS!!!!!
So, although many of you have valid points, dont expect us "other" workers to not respond.
When you Teachers Attacked and cont. to make statements like "why dont they pick on the road crews, sanitation workers, firefighters, etc is what caused all this backlash towards Teachers.
Again, ALL other workers do what Teachers do such as work late, get sick from co workers, some are Instructors that teach and grade and make tests, etc and no one is complaining except you Teachers.
So, as the old story goes that I said before... If you point your finger at someone, you have 3 pointing right back at you.
"moot" : of little practical value
"mute" : silent

try the second one on for size.....

Is it truly a surprise that teachers in urban districts are out more than in suburban districts? Think of the day-to-day problems in each school, the conflicts in each school, and the stresses involved. In the suburbs, you might have to deal with ONE child who forgot his homework as the most difficult discipline problem. In urban schools, teachers deal with knives, guns, drugs, and endless hostility from students.

I see a big nasty culture war emerging, and it has to do with the intellectuals vs the uneducated, which i presume, have nothing agianst being uneducated. Well, not everyone thinks like the illiterate, hateful, and of course, the christian. I know that youre probably a christian. Youre probably thinking, what does that have to do with this article? Ill tell you what, christians hate education, thats what this is about. You dont have to tell me, i already know your religion and your agenda.

LOL

It's a "moot" point, rocket scientist. "Mute" is what you should be.

VALIDATION AGAIN… Just as I have been saying all along… You three have VALIDATED exactly why you are despise by taxpayers and parents.

It is hoped that someone that reads this that lives I YOUR school districts can identify who these masterful Teachers are before they actually take their anger out on an innocent child.

I’m HAPPY that my kids don’t go to school where you teach.

But, in closing… Again, thanks for validating just how angry some of you teachers are which is the basis of this entire post from the beginning to end.

And THIS is EXACTLY why all of us Taxpayers will unite against Teachers and tenure.

Case closed!!!

Absent teachers affect learning Rampant teacher absenteeism also costs school districts hundreds of thousands of dollars each year for substitutes who, in New York, do not need a teaching certificate or any teacher training.

IF A TEACHER IS ABSENT WHY SHOULD US TAXPAYERS PAY THOUSANDS OF XTRA DOLLERS AS IF OUR TAXES ARENT ENOUGH. LET YOUR UNION PAY FOR YOUR SICK DAYS OUT OF THIER STRIKE FUND.

YAH RIGHT!!! IF THE TEACHERS UNON HAD TO PAY SICK PAY FOR TEACHERS, THEN PERHAPS THE UNION ITSELF WOULD CRACK DOWN ON THESE SCAMERS WHO COST US A TON OF $$$$$.

"There's a certain sense within the school that sets a cultural norm that you're only absent for real reasons and in other schools the sense is that at long as I'm abiding by the contract that we have it's okay," Educational Psychology Professor James Allen said.

For the month of December, an average of 8.2 percent of Albany teachers were absent every school day. Troy is at the top again with a December absentee rate of 8.6 percent, but in Schenectady only 3.3 percent.

WHAT'S A MATTER, CANT YOU WAIT UNTIL SCHOOL LET'S OUT FOR CHRISTMAS SHIPPING OR AT LEAST DO IT ON WEEKENDS!

Things do happen in every district, but not every district has Albany and Troy's rampant absenteeism. Albany's absentee rate reached 10 percent or higher three times. In Troy, they reached double digits on 11 days, twice coming just shy of 14 percent.

WOW!!!!!

And it's probably no surprise the most popular day to call in sick for teachers in all districts, just like workers in all jobs, is Friday.

YES, IT'S NO SURPRISE AT ALL AND WE TAXPAYERS ALL WOUNDER WHY!!!!

Why do you assume that the people who corrected your spelling and grammar errors are teachers? Others are horrified by your rage and ignorance as well. And how do you make the leap from someone expressing a rational opinion in this forum to "taking out their anger" on your kids. You are the one with the anger problem, my friend, it's all over your posts. Just one more erroneous assumption to villify teachers. Don't you remember what you were taught about assuming?

Then we have the nerve to wonder why our children arent learning ..........NO STABILITY ......meaning that the children cant learn should the regular teacher not be there to enforce her own lesson plans. Come on we all know how it is when we all were in school our children are no different. When there is a substitute its free time! What child you know doesnt run all over the substitute? These teachers need to face some kind of penalties for taking so many days off. This could very much explain the reasons why these children are failing so miserably. Watch the report cards on the schools its ridiculous. IMO

PLEASE EDUCATE ME WHAT WAS RATIONAL ABOUT ALL OF YOU AND THE REST OF THE TEACHERS POSTS???

You see, if someone is "angry" and expresses their opinion about teachers you teachers, once again, try to control how "MY" opinion differs by calling me angry. Please tell me, what's wrong with anger? Is it something bad? You Teachers are a fine example of anger as all of you were and are angry right from the very beginning when you started this post. So, do some homework on yourselves also. Oh, I almost forgot, you blame us parants and Taxpayers as you always do and when we express opinions and facts you respond back saying that we make "erroneous assumption to villify teachers". Perhaps you should take a closer look in the mirror on who you attacked from the beginning which is any and all other workers and professions.

Don't I have the freedom as an American to express my anger? Don't I as a Taxpayer have the freedom to express my displeasure with "some not all" teachers? Don't I as parent have the freedom to express my anger at how Teachers are100% GUILTY OF POLITICAL INDOCTRINATION?

I asked this question many posts ago and still hear crickets!!!

WHY did YOUR School “force” MY kids to watch an Anti American Movie from the biggest Liberal Al Gore ‘An Inconvenient Truth’?????? WHY did all of YOU teachers allow this trash of a lie movie to be shown to millions of children telling them that America is killing Polar Bears??? WHY??? Again, I don’t send MY kids to school to be brainwashed and political indoctrination by Anti American Liberals who pose as Teachers. So, please tell me exactly “WHY” this movie was FORCED on my kids and then when they come home crying telling me please daddy, don’t kill the Polar Bears and YOU teachers have the balls to say that you’re not “partially” the problem?? The School system is guilty of political indoctrination of American children and all of you know it!!!

So, I can tell you this… If I was a teacher and had done MY homework about that propaganda movie I would have taken the RESPONSIBILITY understanding that I am a Teacher with a Masters Degree and would have stood up and said NOT to show this movie because there is NO FACTS or REBUTTALS!!!! So, since Teachers DID NOT stand up against this false information it is 100% proven that Teachers actually knew that this was a bad movie but failed as Teachers to stand up and say NO because it helped their Liberal cause, or that they 100% wanted this movie to be shown to LIE to the children because they ARE Liberals and what better way to move forward the Liberal Agenda then to brainwash kids at a young age!!!

Teachers ARE 100% GUILTY OF POLITICAL INDOCTRINATION.
And you wonder WHY we Parents and Taxpayers complain at you Teachers. BUT, you ALSO seem to not read all of my post as I have nothing but praise for all the good teachers that do what they are supposed to which is to educate not Indoctrinate…

And you wounder WHY we parants and Taxpayers complain???????

Teachers Agree: Bad Apples Stay
A study conducted by Public Agenda in 2003 polled 1,345 schoolteachers on a variety of education issues, including the role that tenure played in their schools. When asked “does tenure mean that a teacher has worked hard and proved themselves to be very good at what they do?” 58 percent of the teachers polled answered that no, tenure “does not necessarily” mean that. In a related question, 78 percent said a few (or more) teachers in their schools “fail to do a good job and are simply going through the motions.”

The Union Tax on Firing Bad Teachers
So why don’t districts try to terminate more of their poor performers? The sad answer is that teachers unions have made the process prohibitively expensive and time-consuming. In Illinois, Reeder found, it costs an average of $219,504 in legal fees alone to get a termination case past all the union-supported hurdles. Columbus, Ohio’s own teachers union president admitted to the Associated Press that firing a tenured teacher can cost as much as $50,000. In New York State, the average is $128,941 (Education Week reports that in New York City, the average is $163,142). A spokesman for Idaho school administrators told local press that districts have been known to spend “$100,000 or $200,000” in litigation costs just to get rid of a bad teacher.

AND IN NEW YORK STATE...

In New York, after 3 years, public school teachers receive what's commonly called "tenure," a special employment protection that teachers unions defend. As the below federal statistics indicate, tenured teachers (as opposed to less-senior "probationary" teachers) are practically impossible to fire.

Here are the steps I need to take to become a teacher in New York:

1. Get a Bachelor's Degree.
2. Get a Master's Degree.
3. Take and pass the New York State Content Specialty Test, the New York State Liberal Arts and Sciences Test, and the New York State Assessment of Teaching Skills, Written. All cost $88.
4. Get fingerprinted.$100.
5. Apply for an initial license that expires in five years.
6. Take a child abuse reporting course. Every year.
7. After aquiring a teaching position, apply for a provisional license that will have to be reviewed and reapplied for every few years.
8. Continue to take professional development courses(120 hours per year) every year, some at my expense.
9. Apply for tenure, which is a veryyyyyyyyy long process involving portfolio work, evaluations by principals, superintendants, etc.

But don't worry, after all this, then teachers can slack off whenever we want because we have tenure which makes us invincible. Forget steps 1-8.

As a substitute teacher, I'm fighting against this attitude every single day. I can assure that while I am in the classroom, it is NOT a free day. I follow the teacher's lesson plans and if there aren't any, I am completely capable of creating my own. Albany is in the process of creating a substitute teacher training program, in which there is a standard procedure for teachers to follow when creating plans for substitute and for substitutes to learn the ropes for each school across all grade levels to assure that we maximize learning while the regular teacher is out.

As for children, "running all over the substitute." Well, yes, children do test the limits when the regular teacher is out. However, are you reinforcing this behavior with your own child? Do you perpetuate this behavior by having a lower expectation for a substitute teacher? Children who are taught to teach ALL adults with respect, regardless if they are a substitute teacher, classroom teacher, lunch aide, etc., do not act up. Children who are taught to see substitutes as "inadequate" and therefore prey to be walked on, will act accordingly.

What is the total number of teachers in each district? What is the total number of students? Did anyone consider the working conditions? How many are district mandated days for out of school conferences or standardized test correction? Do the numbers of absence dates include Long Term Illness or Maternity Leaves?
Answer these questions too.

Now that I think a bit more, I once read that TEACHERS are Second to Doctors in the exposure to illness. Have you ever seen a sick child in school? Teachers are exposed to hundreds of children per day. I bet all of us have either gone to school sick or sent sick children to school.
