Months-long Suffolk-state patrol saga still unresolved

Following County Executive Steve Levy 's months-long dispute with Albany over patrolling Suffolk's state-owned roads is a bit like watching the film "Groundhog Day," in which a man is forced to relive the same ...

We don't need to fund an entirely new police dep't. The troopers will have to expand: helicopter, detectives, crime scene, narcotics, support personnel, mechanics. pistol range, SWAT, vehicles. training officers, admin staff, juvenile, etc. Like the sherrifs dep't, they already have a boat. There's already to much duplication of services.

Levy is a twert. We won't save nothing. State taxes will go up in order for him to promote himself.

Seems like no one is patrolling the LIE lately. It's like a racetrack out there and God help you if you happen to be obeying the speed limit. Cars tailgate you if you're not going fast enough and zip past you barely clearing your car. Somebody better get back to patrolling.

Just remember the basics, slower traffic keep right and leave the left lane open for passers. 80 mph is safe as long as others are educated and not ignorant.

Let them all go. We do not need trooper or arrogant highway patrols. The Fire Department beats them to every accident and they work for free. So less people paying summonses and making All State richer. I see no reason to have the Hitler Youth on our highways any longer.

One thing that never made sense about the passing law - What if you're in the left lane and the guy in front of you is doing 45? How do you get around him? Use the left shoulder?

Suffolk needs like 2 or 3 cars for each HWY guy out their. They sure wrote the book on wasting tax money. Also the vast majority of emergency calls are for the Fire Dept. Fire can close the HWY down and handle everything until the local patrol car can come to do the paperwork. The volunteers love that stuff! They can closed that HWY with their chief the first responder cars alone. Dont need much state or local ploice.

This is not a new development - people drive like that fat a-h-o-l-e-s that they are regardless of the current Police issues.

By the way, the cops don't stop anybody anyway - unless you are driving 90+- they could care less about tailgating - lazy slobs

Balboni is a big bag of hot air. A complete do-nothing who fancies himself as some type of security czar. The state should begin to come up with the money to pay the troopers by getting rid of Balboni's position, his staff and perks. This is the same Mike Balboni who won reelection and then immediately joined Spitzer's administration in a scheme devised by the Democrats to get rid of an elected Republican senator and elect one of their own: Craig Johnson - and it worked.

Steve Levy is right on the mark with his position. Why should Suffolk Police be on the LIE when it is a state road and the state police patrol all other state roads. Levy seems to be the only one that ever speaks out for taxpayers and takes on the PBA. I am a Republican but Levy will always have my vote.

Good job spelling "an" wrong.

And if people did follow the "left lane is passing lane" rule, then the roads may be a bit safer. Still doesn't help if someone is going 80 in the middle land and would prefer the driver to move instead of going to the left lane and pass them.

But the fact is that if you're going slower in the left lane than people are in the other lanes, then you have no business being in that lane. Right lane is slow traffic/entering and exiting lane, middle lane is cruising lane, and left lane is passing lane. On a two-lane road, the right lane handles the responsibilities for both the right and middle lane.

No Suffolk cops are being fired so there is no money at all being saved! Instead we will pay EXTRA for the state PD.

I am glad that Levy will not blink on the States games. Not like that spinless guy in Nassau who turned 180. And yes the county does save money because of no overtime pay which will save on pension costs down the road.

Well, if Mr.Levy doesn't want Suffolk cops patrolling state roadways then I guess that means that they should be pulled off of all state roads in Suffolk...ie. Rt.25,Rt27a(that would be Montauk Hwy.),Rt.109,Rt.110,Rt.111,Rt. 112,Rt.231,Rt.347, and Rt.454.

Hey...great idea Stevie...now maybe I can get a cop to patrol my neighborhood. STEVE LEVY FOR GOVERNOR!!!

OH! One question Mr. Levy.....ummm...aren't we still paying the cops that you take of the LIE and Sunrise....I mean they still get paid whether they're in a patrol car in Islip or on the LIE or Sunrise....right??? Or are they getting fired and that's how you're going to save all of us money??

Can't wait to get up on that Expressway to see just how fast my car will go. Thanks for the savings Stevie...

Troopers should be on the highway. They patrol the Thruways upstate and should patrol the highways down here.

Suffolk cops should go back to the precints. More cops in the neighborhoods should make the public happy.

Suffolk PBA dont care about public safety they are just scared to lose turf to the Troopers.

Suffolk Sheriffs biggest waste of money ever. All they are supposed to do is transfer prisoners so why do they have a boat in Southampton? The Coast Guard and Bay Constables not enough? Why do they have motorcycles? How many prisoners can you move on a bike? Hey Steve you want to cut costs, check the Sheriffs Dept.

Levy's plan will save money you morons. Shifting HWY cops to precinct patrols cuts the number of officers that need to be hired to replace retiring precinct officers. In the short term, the cost will remain the same but since the HWY cops shifted to precinct service will be extra (b/c the PBA's generous minimum staffing levels are already achieved) a new hire will not be required for each retire. Lets think long term people. We pay state taxes just like everyone upstate so we deserve the same treatment. Nice to have a politician with balls enough to do the unpopular. BTW there were 6 HWY cops sitting 100' off the LIE eastbound shoulder at 5:20 this evening. Seeing that makes it haed to convince anyone that sending some to precincts will jeopardize safety. The PBA works for its members, not the public. Remember that.
