It's nice that Paterson and Skelos are both against raising taxes. That's important, and it's a start. But it's only a start.

With mounting deficits, what has to happen is for spending to be cut, and we have seen time and time again that legislators like Skelos have no will to cut. Their expertise is spending, not cutting.

The days of free spending are over. Get cutting, or get out of the way.

We don't need layoffs, we need a permanent reduction in the size of the State, County, and Local governments. Get rid of the special taxing districts. Consolidate school districts and eliminate a hundred superintendents and their staffs etc etc..

The operative word is cuts. Raising taxes is not the answer. The Gov should have cut taxes upon assuming office after Spitzer.

Head for the lifeboats folks... it all coming down! I guess all that social services spending for people that have more time to breed than go to work seems like a big issue now.... or all those "poor" illegal aliens taking $$$ from our system, not paying taxes and milking us dry is a problem... or how about those mistreated "indians" selling cigarettes without taxes.... seems all these issues that weren't a big deal when things were good are SINKING us now! Wake up folks... those of us working to keep this system afloat are being laughed at... time to REVOLT!

Typical NYS/Albany move - we need to revolt or get out while the getting is... not so bad.

If the government would start enforcing immigration laws we might get out of this mess . Send the illegals home . We can no longer afford them not paying their fair share in taxes . They are a drain on our schools and our health care .I would love to know how many of the homes that are in foreclosure were owned by illegals?
I dread getting my school tax bill this year . The illegals have babies like rabbits and we have to pay to educate them.

I have an Idea. Fire about 200,000 people taking up absolutely useless positions, That should be a god start.

These State & Local Governments should be dragged into Court for RICO charges.

To bad we cant drag the Federal Government to Supreme court for the same charges

GET OUT OF NY..........FAST!

A Revolt is exactlty what this State & Country needs...but the popullation is to busy shoving Ipod Ear Buds in their ears & worying about where the Britney sex tape is. The system has turned most of us into Sheep waiting in flocks to be sheered. fuckindisgrace

(Reuters)- New York Gov. David Paterson on Friday pledged not to raise taxes, even as he predicted an increase in the state's budget deficit to $2 billion amid fallout from the credit crisis and recalled the legislature for a special session next month to address the economy.

Paterson, a Democrat, said he feared Wall Street, which accounts for one out of every five tax dollars in the state, could slash bonuses by 60 percent and capital gains tax collections could plunge by about 50 percent.

Paterson said Wall Street bonuses generate 30 percent of the state's taxes in the January to March quarter....

Sad how the state is so heavily dependent on bonuses that those d'bag banking and Wall Street folks earn for their masterful con job.

Brilliant, unfortunately they can’t; everyone who votes for these Cretans you see, is looking for a handout. It’s a great New York tradition that dates back to the Tammany Hall days, put everyone on the payroll, nothing seems to change, does it. That being the foundation of our local politics, I do agree however, with those that argue against giving any benefits to illegal’s. Although everyone’s afraid to calculate the cost, it must be in the billions. That would go a long way towards balancing the shortfall. As the unemployment rate goes even higher, it makes no sense to continue the policies that enable these interloper’s staying here. It’s time to end this madness. It’s time they go home.

I'm not for anyone losing their job, but how much would every government employee taking a 5% pay cut save?

Everyone still has a job, but just has a tad less to spend.

It is high time the cradle-to-grave-paid government employees share some of the burden.

All I hear is we will have to raise taxes to make up the difference, like it's a given. How about cutting costs!? When was the last time a NY government employee was fired or let go? In NYC We are paying teachers millions who are not even teaching!

A 5% pay cut for all govt employees easily solves the problem and keeps people with jobs.

It always seems like an almost natural act...tax revenue is down, raise tax rates...

And to all those haughty people who place posts here bragging about "just shut up and take it"...trust me, your time will come...
