Is it me or does anyone else suspect that City Worker's kids have purple hair, tattoos and body piercings?

Oh well, CW, the MickyD's always needs workers. Plus, your kids will be able to get some free food every now and then.

It's kinda hard to dress to impress when your employer cannot control the climate of a building, 98 degrees one day 46 degrees the next. Or when the elevators often do not work properly and you may have to hike 9 floors, or the floors are filthy and other items are in disrepair (yea I'm talking about the city buildings) Your working environment sets the tone. It's all about morale. If big companies are so put out why don't they quit giving their CEO big bonuses and starting giving clothing allowances to their employees. Dressing to kill takes BIG BUCKS! Right now everyone is spending their wages on GAS. Or better yet provide employees with a uniform and quit crying
You raise some good points, as this building also seems to range from COLD to HOT depending on the day, so how do you dress for it??

And dressing to kill does take big bucks. Most people can't afford Joseph A. Bank and Brooks Brothers when they're paid $30k and spending $4/gallon for gas.

Sounds like someone went to Petty/Winwood last night! We were there as well and got SOAKED! Still a great show! I could have listened to Petty all night long, but was a little disappointed he catered to the kids with new tunes. Would like to have heard more of his old tunes. Still a killer show!!
Nope, wasn't there. I just like good lookin femailians in the workplace!

Woulda liked to have seen TP though. TPatHB put on an excellent live show. Saw them once before...

Never seen Stevie... I would have gone just to see him.

Whether they do or not, they are students, NOT employees. If they want a "conformity" job later on, they can "conform" then.

Sorry, I don't subscribe to the August routine of some people: "school starts in 2 weeks so you need to go to bed early starting now to get used to it". Nope--you start going to bed early the night before school begins.

And both these cases, "now is now" and "then is then".

Er, it's called a sweater. You take one to work and leave it in your office or cubicle. That way, when it is 46 degrees, you can put it on. When it is 98 degrees, you don't. Maybe you were at the tattoo and piercing shop on the day they taught that lesson?

The only thing that matters is their ability to do the job. I don't care if my financial advisor wears a Cleveland Browns uniform (or blue jeans & sandals) if he's getting me big returns on my invested funds. Or--is he a competent doctor, roofer, teacher?---the judgement is made by actions and results, not what they are wearing.
Sorry City Worker, but I expect my Dr. or my financial advisor to be dressed as a professional and wear the proper attire when acting in his capacity as an advisor...we all know that whether it is shirt & tie or flannel & jeans they can be thieves..as a society (rebels aside) at whole there is a reflection/appearance of each respective position that accords a certain level of respect....I cannot take someone too seriously if they have tatoo's,piercings or just plain poor hygiene as my finacial adviser, doctor or sales clerk for that matter...call me narrow minded, or call me an old codger (I'm 50)I expect sensibilities...although,like Mr. B. Meister we do have a few young females in our firm who dress rather suggestively, I somehow don't seem to mind as much....

There isn't anythin' more comical than watchin' a young professional come to a job interview, in wrinkled slacks, unbuttoned shirt and a bedhead hairdo, with a look of complete confusion as to why he doesn't seem to be able to get the sort of postions he's qualified for.
Employees, when unsure of the policy, should check with their employer before wearin' some of their more garish attire to work.
And don't forget those who's bodies are literally filled with tattoos.

OK---so now we have determined our differences. The appearance, or facade, is what matters most to you, regardless of the competancy of the person. To me, how good is his work(as a financial planner, medical professional, electrician, dry cleaner)---and that's all the matters. I don't give a xxxx what he or she dresses like---to use a really old cliche(you said you are 50, so you'll know it), "you can't judge a book by it's cover". And that's all clothing is, a facade.

your mentality is why kids run around looking like slobs. you must be one of the parents who doesn't want to upset their angel. and yes I do feel the need to tell others how to live when I have to watch stupid people walk down the sidewalk holding the crotch of their pants because they are falling down all the while I have to stare at their underwear. have some pride.

I always thought attending school and learning how to succeed was an important part of preparing for adult life.

It's not about spending 7 hours a day playing with your buddies, seeing who can moronically one-up everyone else on the tattoo and tongue-piercing scale.

You know what might be a good idea? Instead of the private schools being the ones with strict dress codes and uniforms, they should switch to an "anything goes" policy. And the public schools should be the ones with the uniforms and strict dress codes and strong educators. If you want your child to develop as a renegade with criminal tendencies, you send them to the private school. And pay out the wazoo for exercising your right to destroy your child's life.

Kids will always be kids. They will all want to "be different" than their parents and do their own thing. How stupid they must feel, though, when they realize that they are conforming to an asinine "look" and mindset which is accomplishing nothing more than preparing them for a life of living on $8/hour jobs... that is if they can find an employer who will even have them.

There's a Quizno's here in Austin, Texas on the northbound frontage road of highway 183 near the Arboretum. A few years ago, a boy there waited on me who had "the look". The four earrings in each ear. The tattoos on the neck and arms. A face just made for radio. The purple and red, spiky hair. I'll never stop in there again. It's not only the boy, it's the management that would hire such a boy. Stupidity runs amok.

As an employer, when I see an applicant dressed well (clothes from Goodwill or Dress For Less can certainly make one well-dressed), I see someone who has at least recognized the benefits of presenting themselves as a classy, focused, willing-to-learn candidate.

When I see anything including 4 earrings per ear, lip rings, multiple tattoos, and red/blue hair, I see someone who most likely will not be focused on performing well on the job. I see a job candidate who obviously does not have parents. I see a person whom I would be embarrassed to put in front of a client.

You want to dress that way? You want your kids to dress that way? Fine with me. I'm not about to impose my tastes and morality upon you. But at the end of the day, you are making my job as an employer MUCH easier in deciding among the job applicants who come through my door.

Those who dress decently and are well-groomed thank you very much!

This should be an eye opener for all you freedom of expression people that immediately start jumping up and down when a school considers a dress code. Wake up... what you wear directly impacts on how you are perceived. A 19 year old should not have to be told how to dress for a job. I can only assume she was one of the kids that constantly wore flip flops and jeans that showed her butt crack while in highschool. and had parents that didn't want to infringe on their little angel's freedom of expression. good job with that parenting. wake up america and parents...teach your children right from wrong and please teach them how to dress. I know this is a shocker but you are in charge.

Wow, big leap there...how could you possibly have gathered from my comments that appearance/facade was my highest priority when working in a professional capacity regardless of compentancy...let me guess, you harbor a deep resentment of higher authorities within your institution (can't say I blame you...COA has some real winners)....I beleive the topic centered on inappropriate attire, and yes, I expect my advisors (health, wealth or otherwise the sales clerk)to be dressed accordingly to thier position !

Totally agree.

Perhaps include a parenting class, beginning in 9th or 10th grade. One class every year through high school.

I'd have no complaints about this. Of course, the absentee parents will complain about it, saying that such a class will brainwash their children into beliefs and moral compasses which don't agree with theirs. And that is nothing more than B.S.

Maybe those adults who would complain should self-examine why they are so limited in their thinking, to demand control of their children's opportunities to learn and appreciate multiple sides of the issues.

Schools DO have dress codes. Unfortunately, too many have taken those codes to the extremes because of lack of common sense (among other things) and schools now have to explicitly spell out what is no longer allowed.

Nobody is telling you how to live your lives. SO stop with the dramatics City Drama Queen. And as far as schools having dress codes, that is their right. Obviously you can't see the bigger picture. All you see is what is typical of people like you -- thinking you're always being told what to do. Kids have NO say. They're minors.
