match.com scam? or is she real? conartist?

i'm new to online dating and i just ran across a very curious girl. she sent me a message on match.com professing interest in me and how much she liked my profile. and she suggest i might email her to her yahoo address instead of through match.com .

after reading that initial match.com message, i tried clicking on her profile but it is unavailable (though her thumbnail pic still shows up in my "connections" page).

but i'm curious...her first message was very nice...the thumbnail looks good (from what i can see). so i email her yahoo address. we learn abit about eachother. she say she was born in the states. grew up in the UK. now resides in the same state as me in a city an hour or so away. she's modeling right now in nigeria...but is coming back home in one week. she plans to quit modeling.

we've exchanged 7-8 long emails in the last 2 weeks or so. and she's coming back home in one week. and wants to meet me when she gets back. no signs of typical scams...like mentions of money or tragedy or anything like that.

the thing that makes me suspicious is that her grammar is a bit off every once in a while...she's fallen for me far to quickly...she attributed some said things to me that i never said...one email contained a portion of stuff that was plagarized and used as her own...

what do you guys think? should i meet this person? or will that just wind me up in a body bag?

i wrote a book on online dating, a story about online players, and how i tracked one down. anyway, first of all, as a rule, 1) if it seems too good to be true, forget about it, 2) if you have any suspicions at all, forget about it, 3) if it is anyone in the UK forget about it - the UK is scam central, London especially. I went to london on a fact finding mission and was blown away at the extensive amount of con artists that reside there - they come from all over the world, nigeria in particular. london aint the same as it used to be.

it sounds to me like you should just click 'delete'..

I had the exact same mail a couple of months back. I deleted it, obvious scam.

Do not contact her...There are numerous scams out there just like the one you described. She or he> who knows? will ask you to cash a money order,deposit it in your bank then wire her/him the money!!! By the time the bank finds out the money order is a fake she will have already had spent the money!!!

Guys, glad I decided to do some research after receiving an email like the one described above. I did fall for it and respond using my yahoo address, however, I have a generic one that I use for non-trusted sites and such. The scenario you have described is very similar to what so far has happened. The London thing is the same, the grammer being off, and pictures of this young woman show her as being WAY too good looking (I think) to be trolling around Match.com or any other dating site. Glad I'm listening to my intuition - and reading your posts!!

In would RUN!! I fell for somehting similar and he sent me counterfiet money orders. I brought them to the poast office and they would not cash them so dont fall for it!

Simply put...as one person here said...if it is too good to be true...it is too good to be true. This is not a new problem. The internet just allows easier access to this. I have profiles on some sites that are the same as my yahoo address (I do that intentionally) and I get these all the time. First they say hello then they ring you to get your attention.

It is nothing but a scam. If the person has the poor use of words (and not from Kentucky) just kidding. Then they are trying to put their words into English...RUN.

Some of these people are good in that some don't rush you...like the original post said...several weeks. That is because she has a number of fish on the hook...and gaining your confidence by not seeming to be in a rush...RUN LIKE HELL.

Simply put, if the say there are away on business...or whatever...either don't respond or tell them to enjoy their time there....then RUN LIKE HELL. They will do anything to seperate you from your money...and unfortunatly...there's enough people that get taken on this.

Trust your instincts which seem to be telling you that something is off. I've done online dating and am actually engaged to someone I met online so I do believe it can work but you have to be wary. I never spoke by personal email or phone unless I have had multiple emails and then I showed it to friends. If I did meet a man somewhere, I always made it public and let someone know. A big clue...if they don't talk about family or friends locally...

dude I have just received the same email we exchanged and she now wants to send me a money order to cash and then western union the money to her, it is only a matter of time, Nigeria is one of the top scams artist on email. Sorry but drop her no matter how good looking the pictures seem to be.

I just want people to know that if you meet a girl on the intranet and she is over seas and in a modeling agency and she needs you to cash a money morder and western union the money to her DO not do it it is a scam and by the time the money order gets cashed and you send her the money the bank then will find it a fake and then you will half to pay back the money, guys we need to stick together hey no matter how good looking she is do not cash the money orders and how can someone trust you in just a week or two any how, does not make sence.

I just met a woman who was beautiful, a Christian, and was working for UNICEF in Nigeria. I started getting suspicious when she would contradict herself, and she couldn't tell me where in Italy she grew up in. Two weeks into it, she all of a sudden wants to spend the rest of her life with me, but needs some money to pay for her hotel in Nigeria. Well, UNICEF is a United Nations thing and my sister used to work for them in another part of the world, and the sure as heck don't stay in hotels on their own dime.

Be careful guys, these people have no shame in using your personality and your religion against you. Keep your wallets close!

I work at a financial institution and am responsible for our internet access and respond to all incoming emails as well. Beware! We are constantly getting emails such as what you have received from individuals using broken english. We even have customers who have fallen for the money order scam and lost thousands of dollars as a result. As was said in earlier comments....if it seems too good to be true it probably is. TRUST YOUR INSTINCTS!

I just got an email from someone posing to be from Cleveland Wisconsin. Oh but she was away at a modeling job in west Africa. The best part was the sob story in the beginning of her email. "Oh i am a native american brought up on an orphanage because my parents were killed in a plane crash". Oh man that was the best. And yes like many comments before me. The misspellings were too frequent to be real. My instincts were right. Good luck out there and be careful.

You keep using "she" to describe the probable scammer. Let's be clear, it is far more likely that this is a man and it is most certainly not the person in the picture. I've had a couple of these things from Russia and now I think I've got one from Peru. Anyone know if there is a situation with scammers in Peru?
