I had been in a relationship (found out to late was all one sided) with a soldier who claimed to be in the Military in Afghanistan. He claimed to be Sgt. Lawrence Marthins. He claimed to be from Baltimore. Had a three month relationship which grew from twice a week by e-mail to daily in the last 4-six weeks. A fraud , heartbreaker and a thief, low-life, etc, etc. Milked me out of close to four thousand dollars. He was to come to me on a unscheduled military leave and of course needed the funds for logistics, travel etc, etc. Even had me send the money through money mart to NATO-NATO.
DONT BE NAIVE LADIES, I thought he was really the real deal. The money I can earn again, my heart will be forever scared.
sorry to hear about your situation. Hope you help others avoid ppl like that

you'll need to go back and review a few things that have been posted. One everything you've been told is a lie, two the point is to convince you in order to extort you and lastly general officers in the military make enough money to be comfortable forever and have enough small minions to live in a castle without any help from anyone.

My favorite was cool_marine76- that is his yahoo screen name with a picture perfect body and horrible typing skills. This scammer is clamming to be a U.S Marine pilot deployed in Iraq, from Dallas Texas. U bet!!! This guy even has a fake Facebook page (James Frankline) Pixelated photo, no profile and he even killed off his parents in a plane crash 3 years ago (2012).
Question who you talk to if they take longer than 5 seconds to reply they are searching the Internet for the right answer. I surprised that the FBI is not involved in this, it is an internet crime. Do not send any money. Get suspicious about who you chat with on line and test them. In most cases they are not familiar with the military standards and can be caught in a lie right off.Think your being scammed reported to the FBI Internet Crime page on fib.gov .
If a military member does contact you via yahoo, Facebook , zooks or any other chat site find out everything you can about them but share nothing about yourself.

I too landed up talking to this guy with the ID cool_marine76@yahoo.com who claims to be a marine pilot posted in Iraq. As we talked I found out that he is fake. He is glib talker and you will fall easily...He calls himself James Frankline and says his parents died in a crash 3 yrs back and that he is all alone. Please be careful ladies!!! He is regularly online in yahoo chat rooms trying to find vulnerable people.

I recieved a letter from a Major Tom Miller, who is based in Camp Whitehorse in Afghanistan. He is soon to be retired, and is looking for a special someone to meet up with. He has an 11year old daughter living with his maid at his home in Dallas. He is widowed, and his mother (who died 15yrs ago) was German, and his father American. Apparently they met whilst working for UNICEF, got married briefly, had him, then divorced. He covers why he cannot phone me, due to the government realising that privacy wasn't protected. It is so well thought out, and covers everything from his birthdate to what he does in Afghanistan. The spelling on the other hand is very bad, which I thought from a Major, just didn't make sense. And the letter was headed.'Hello Dear'. So very generalistic, although he knew my name. So, anyway, replied, more or less telling this guy where to shove his intentions, and that I wasn't about to send any money, for any reason to him.Bet I don't hear anything back. Surprise, surprise.

It's always a good setup. But like you did, focusing on the parts of the story that brought out red flags and you pursued.
I hope more ppl read this thread and stay with the red flags while exposing these con artists

I too have been corresponding with a Maj. Kevin Dawson, I told him upfront that if I were to have to pay any money I could not help him, I was told that I would not have too. Now they want 630 pounds for insurance coverage before the package can be put on the plane, I was sure that this is scam, but as one other person said he sounded so serious about the whole transaction. He even sent a picture with the USAF emblem on it, what a hokes.
Thank you.

The unfortunate part about these petty crimes is that there are so many scam artists doin it. And the military wouldnt be able to dedicate full time personnel to it.
On the flip side. Almost 98% of what the scam artists ask money for is free of charge to any and all military personnel. Which in essence is the first hole in their plan.
The AF logo can pretty much be copied and duplicated any/everywhere. Good luck

I got a wierd phishing email from a supposed military guy. I indulged by responding that I live next to an Army base and I sent the email to my drinking buddy and friend the Colonel. That identity theft or stealing military honors or identity are federal felonies. That we take our men and women in uniform very seriously and finally, "Watch out for drones. They will splatter your bullshit."
I looked for a way to report this kind of email fraud to anyone in the military but could not find any appropriate contact online.

I own and run www.accentudate.com and we've seen similar behavior with some profiles portraying US soldiers. Turns out that some of them are Nigerian scammers asking for money. At first glance these profiles look legit but we've implemented a few checks that reliably detect and remove them.

It's unfortunate these people use our military to prey on others.
