Donít stand in way of 1st-class restaurants

Jan 17, 2012 | Posted by: Marie Callender | Full story: www.register-herald.com

Donít stand in way of 1st-class restaurants I noticed in Mondayís paper that a hearing is scheduled today for public comment or input to the building of an Olive Garden in Beckley at the Raleigh Mall.

My question is: Why the public input? There has never in my knowledge been a hearing before any other restaurant was given a permit to open for business. Why and who is it that is trying to stop the Olive Garden and Red Lobster from coming to Beckley? Are they afraid it will put them out of business or take away from them? It seems that someone is trying very hard to keep a first-class restaurant from coming to Beckley.

Beckley is in need of restaurants of this caliber where you can get a good meal without music so loud you canít hear someone across the table from you talking. Want my input? Let them start construction ASAP.

James Bostic, Beckley

simple....someone on a board or committee has a restaurant and is using their authority to control the competition, This is how America works now. The rich get richer and the rest get screwed.

I never heard of this either.

All you have to do is look at who owns similar restaurants and find out of they have ol' buddies in high places and there's your answer.

This single OG would create 60-80 new jobs, and another decent place to eat. But ppl here don't want anything new.

Your assumption is correct. Present businesses have been blocking Olive Garden for a long time. Other, food operations, have also had trouble opening in Beckley as well. They get hassled and run into road blocks, such as delayed permits being granted, etc... Those with power and money ARE in control. This small town is unreal!

With the scout camp coming soon, there will be more demand for restaurants, stores and hotels.

There is no way Dicks would have came here if it wasn't for that.

Get ready for more stuff coming in, up 19 to Oak Hill, too.

You typically see hearings for public comment in residential areas, of which the Raleigh Mall is certainly not one.

well then, why not suggest this area becomes a music and film shooting area for the film industry? We can coinside with this and the coal mines, just as long as SOME people see that the world changes, even this area, sorry pill heads, your time of ruling with breaking into peoples houses are over, welcome to WV 2012

I think we need to start putting bans on all new restaurants until a lot of people lose weight and learn to start feeding their kids correctly. We need to have a law to make it illegal for restaurants to have drive thru windows except for REAL handicapped people and being over weight is not a handicap. We need to have scooters at stores for real handicapped people, if your so fat you take the scooter in the grocery store than you need to walk, not ride and eat. Handicap parking spots are for sick and real disabled people. Eating until your 50 to 700 pounds over weight is not being handicapped, it is being a glutton. It always makes me laugh when people say it's not my fault I have a bad thyroid, bullshit, eating 1 pound of food does not turn into 10 pounds of weight. I do understand being depressed and other such problems makes it hard sometimes but how does being a fat slob and not being able to walk make anything better ever?
LOL I can't wait until all the fat people on here read this and get mad, this is going to be funny. There is nothing wrong with being a bigger person and they are just as pretty and as much loved and appreciated as everyone else. The people I am talking about are the fat ones on the fat scooter at wal-mart, you know who you are.

I've always been the normal weight for my height, but have always been referred to as skinny when I'm not. I bet you're much worse in person than you are on Topix, but it sure isn't anything to be laughing about.

Before you start spouting off you gotta be smart enough to do some research and understand facts. It has to do with the fact that the company that has both OG and RL do not franchise, they are corporately owned and this changes some of the procedures for building requirements and local zoning issues. The companies that do this often initiate the local meetings themselves. What's really wrong with the country today is morons looking for any reason to bitch about stuff they know nothing about.

When I think of a first class restaurant I don't think of Olive Garden, or Red Lobster. Sure they are a nice place to get some decent food, but first class they are not. I have no problem with them coming to Beckley. But do we really need another restauraunt? Personally, I would like some more upscale stores to shop at. I would love to have a mall the size of the one in Charelston or maybe even larger, I think it would be great for the local economy to have something like that here. For those of you excited about the new Olive Garden enjoy.:)

I seen that story in the paper also. It said that 'Olive Garden' has been trying to get on open in Beckley for 15years!!!! I just cannot believe they have been trying for that long and Beckley hasn't allowed it, but then again....I CAN BELIEVE it! Something needs to be done, no wonder people move away from here...more businesses will not open untill others open also, and not this stupid stuff that opens for 6months then closes.

ALLOW OLIVE GARDEN AND ANYTHING ELSE WANTING TO COME TO BECKLEY, OAKHILL,FAYETTEVILLE AREAS!!!!
