I have a farm house that is being supplied with natural gas from my well. The company that owns part of the rights and services it is coming to do some work and drill to another pocket of gas. The owner of the company is trying to persuade me to quit using the free gas I have and go with propane or get hooked up to the gas company. He tells me how much more safe it will be and so on. I suspect he just wants less of the gas taken from the well for free use. I understand the whole mercaptan issue but that hasn't been a problem for me. Can someone tell me their opinion and experience on using well gas in their homes. I plan on building a new house on the property in a few years and would love to utilize it there as well. There are farmers around me who have been using local gas ( sand ) wells for years. I and a neighbor are in the process of hooking up to our wells as we have free gas also via the lease agreement.( 1,000 feet to well using 2 inch high pressure pipe from Industrial sales in Olathe Kansas at 64Cents a foot) Iplus welder to heat weld the conversions to black pipe. hear it can be finicky during the winter with any water in the lines etc, I think it has a lot to do with the well and how dependable it is. I do have a question on the odorizer. I need a dispenser.I have acontact number for King Tool and that appears to be the best place for a farm application size dispenser. Question is where can one get the Murcaptan? Appears to be $700.00 for 5 gallons which is way more than is needed. I am going for it given the costs of LP gas and probable ultimate rises in that area. Good Luck!( Do you use a water separator?) probably a good idea. |

Steve , if you have been using the well with no problems concerning supply , I would continue to do so.Your biggest concern should be the ability of the well to supply a reliable source of gas. This has already been done if you have been using. Your other concern should be a back up source of heat if they have to do work on the well and shut it down for a period of time. I agree with you that the company may have their interest as the greatest concern. If you are connected to the casing work on the line would not interfere with your supply. Work on the well would but that usually is for a short time.I would be interested to hear how he feels it would be so much safer. |

Donald, have you been around the wells? I know gas is suppose to be odorless, but I have never found one that was, maybe so in Kansas.I guess it is a personal choice but I wouldn't be too concerned with odor. Check with the neighbors that have been using the gas.Your .64 per ft. price seems so cheap I would check again.Last pipe we bought was closer to 2.00 per ft. We use plastic pipe for your type of applications and it is about .90 per ft.Com es in 500 ft. rolls. |

Bill; Yes my neighbor advised he paid $2.00 per foot two years ago. This is the same 500foot rolls used for gas well hookups.

post continued; Bill; I went ahead out of an abundance of caution and got a farm ranch style wick odorizer from King Company in Texas. They were helpful and I should be able to get small amounts of Mecaptan ( sp) also. I will take your advise however and have a back up heat source and this keeps coming up in my conversations with others. Seems a shame given the need I have to convert water heater, stove and furnace from LP to Natural gas jets. Thanks for the information.

If you are hooked to the wellhead and they need to work on the line you would not be interrupted, but if they had to work on the well your supply could be interrupted until they finish.Usually only a day or so but there are no guarantees.Some possibilities are one or two fuel oil or electric space heaters (remember you may never need them they are only insurance for winter)a wood burning stove, or a thru the wall propane heater. |
