1 It isn't so much that they can cover up so much as the government let's them slide. They ALREADY have laws on the books to shut them down and plenty of violations to do it. This has been going on for over thirty years. |

1 Politicians like Dan Onorato (who is announcing his run for Governor of Pa.) needs the union, namely the USW to help get him into office. He has the power to call for clean air standards for the Mon Valley and will not do it. He might ruffle the feathers of the polluters like USS. After all, ones political aspirations should ALWAYS come before the health of the public. |

1 Careful my friend....Those bums are liable to get the idea that you are one of those "job killers" heading a "conspiracy to break the union". Never mind that the American steel industry was ruined largely by their efforts -- and laziness -- that they are themselves THE "job killer" of the MonValley and that the only REAL "conspiracy" is the union itself. These essential point is that the MonValley is locked in, the economy locked down and all MODERN industry locked out ..... so that government of the bums, by the bums and for the bums may continue there even if it has vanished from the rest of America. |

1 So the MonValley remains locked in, its economy locked down and any MODERN industry locked out in order that government of the bums, by the bums and for the bums may continue in the MonValley while the rest of the world moves ahead. And....the bums don't even live here! The MonValley would actually be better off under a foreign army of occupation! What do those bums contribute -- poison gas, the black lung, a social and political black eye and an occasional dead body. The USS/USW needs a swastika for their flag and as their logo a skull and crossbones |

1 AMEN! Foreign competitors did NOT defeat the steel industry. They rejected modern technology as a "job killer" and a "conspiracy to break the union" which of course the USW HAD to oppose as a "matter of principle". One has to wonder what sort of principles those bums ascribe to! The problem is exactly the same as was faced by T-rex, the neanderthal man and, more recently the American Indian -- they are paying the price for being backward! There is however one difference. Those other unhappy groups found themselves in that situation by events that were beyond their control. USS/USW CREATED this disaster and did so KNOWINGLY. Not content with that, these bums are now determined to take the whole MonValley down with them. Once again.....one has to wonder just what sort of principles these people believe in or represent.....perhaps "BUMS" is far to kind a word for them! |

1 How would USS cover something like this up??? A 32 year old family man lost his life. All I have to say is taht there was an explosion on USS property that, despite the cause, was THEIR responsibility. They are responsibile for keeping all areas safe, and they are also responsible for ensuring that the workers and contractors employeed are safe. This contractor was doing his job when his life was abruptly stolen. It is imperative the USS is held fully responsible for this devastating tragedy. |

1 I've a MUCH better idea. Eliminate the foreign import quotas, protective tarriffs and government subsidies, quit letting US Steel operate 24/7 in violation of EPA AND OSHA regulations and stop these silly fines. If they cannot meet government and industry standards shut them down until they do. If they cannot compete with foreign steel because the USW insists on fantasizing about "job killers" and "conspiracies" they should go out of business. What the hell good is it having steel plants that are obsolete and can't compete anyhow? Why should the American people get stuck with the check for keeping these old dumps on life support so these overpaid bums can make believe they have real jobs? Why should customers "buy American" if that means passing up quality goods at competitive prices to pay top dollar for shoddy trash? Face it! This old dump with its obsolete labor intensive technology, outdated and depreciated equipment that should have all been on the scrap heap twenty years ago is nothing but one huge aqccident waiting to happen. Its continued reliance on a breakdown maintenance program -- also labor intensive -- ASSURES that these accidents will regularly and frequently occur. Even under conditions of "normal" operation, the Clairton Coke Works operates far beyond EPA limits. This however is of no concern US Steel personnel. Most of them don't even live here. Preferring to simply commute, pollute and steal the loot, they contribute nothing to the economy of the MonValley or its tax base. They prefer to "live some place nice"; their families are not at risk; their kids are not going to die. So on it goes.....US Steel contributes nothing to the MonValley except poison gas, the black lung and the occasional corpse. AND ITS ALL FOR NOTHING!!! |

3 They DIDN'T cover it up. They were fined $7000! That's like a parking ticket for you and me. IF the victims have insurance it will pay of course -- but that's no skin off US Steel's nose. Lawsuit? US Steel can keep it tied up in the courts for years. The cost? Hey, they've already budgeted for this sort of thing; factored it in as part of their cost of doing business. Since they are surviving on governments subsidies, patronage and fiat already, why should they care about that either. The real problem is exactly the same as with any repeat offender -- fines don't do any good. Jail time? That won't work. You can't jail a corporation. If you lock up a few executives, there assistants will take over, they will be out on bail the same day and a battery of lawyers will tie things up in court for years. There is only way left. Shut them down, blow up these old dumps and put these overpaid bums on welfare. That WILL stop the pollution as well as the legalized murder and save the government substantial sums. Without the pollution from the old dumps of US Steel, modern industrial plants -- safer, clean, efficient and profitable -- will at least be able to get construction permits and operating licences. With such industries we are likely to get a better class of people to than these bums from US Steel and these thugs from the USW. Nothing will guarantee success -- but what have we got to lose. These old dumps contribute nothing to the local economy or tax base anyhow. The specter of economic damage that US Steel and the USW has always threatened and continues to threaten the MonValley has in fact already occurred. The reason it continues is because no effort has been made to displace these bums -- much less to REPLACE them. So throw these old dumps and these neanderthals on the scrap heap. Get rid of them and give the rest of the MonValley a chance. ANYTHING'S BETTER THAN WHAT WE'VE GOT NOW!!!! |

1 Off shore steel is usually manufactured in the worst possible conditions, little safety, labor or enviromental concerns. They spend 7% of the cost of the steel on enviromental controls. The North American facilities spend almost 20%.Our plants can compete, given a level playing field, most foreign steel plants are heavily subsidised. You might want to do some research or reading so you have an informed opinion and don't look foolish. |

2 and what is it you do for a living rasputin?maybe we should do away with your way of life'for the better of mon valley'I'm sure what you do could be done in china alot cheaper too..you are a glaring example of wanting everything you percieve as dirty manufactured offshore..remember though for this economy to work consumers must consume and that can only be done if we are employed.you enjoy all the modern convience becuase of the past work of neanderthals |

1 Bravo!!! Now tell me why you fail against Germany, Japan, Korea and every one BESIDES these offshore plants. Tell me why with these alleged expenditures you still operate outside environmental limits 24/7. Explain why modern technologies so successful with foreign manufacturers must be rejected in favor of obsolete, labor-intensive ones. Why breakdown maintenance is the preferried mode over reliability based techniques. Sure you can compete with a "level playing field" -- providing the "levelling" is done in favor of obsolete technology and equipment, supportted by breakdown maintenance and the absence of capital investment. So all your success requires the the absence of progress, foreign competition and free trade. That's a real perscription for success in the global economy. |

4 Except with MODERN Coke plants this can be done in a clean, sfae efficient and profitable manner in Germany, Japan, Korea, Canada, Mexico and elsewhere. Use of obsolete technologies, facilities and equipment isw not inherently meritorious merely because it is more labor-intensive -- quite the contrary, only more expensive and less efficient. As for the consumers, why should they be expected to pass on quality products at competitive prices in order to pay top dollar for shoddy trash? The MonValley itself gets no benefit either. Since those people prefer to "live some place nice" -- whatever that means -- they make no contribution to the local economy or tax base. They prefer simply to commute to pollute and steal the loot. The MonValley would get a better deal from a foreign army of occupation than US Steel and the USW -- unless of course they converted it into a chemical weapons range. ONE MORE EXAMPLE OF HOW ANYTHING'S BETTER |

1 would love to see these "modern coke ovens" you speak of in Canada or Mexico..Mon valley in fact is the place where the newest most moderen coking facility is to be completed in 2010 so you should be happy[that building permit was supposed to be for the lake Erie works but us steal took it down there |

2 Bravo....except they already had one building permit that they are not even using. They won't use this one either. The claim that this old dump or any of these facilities have been modernizes is equalily foolish as their inability to compete with Japan, Germany and Korea demonstrates. Even the cokers in our own refineries out perform it! In the 1980s foreign steelmakers hit you over the head with a two-by-four. Ronald Reagan, one of the best friends American industry ever had, warned you to modernize THEN -- and you did nothing. In the 1990s. Bill Clinton, the advocate of the global economy, warned you to make the switch -- you preferred old technologies assets and equipment. It really doesn't matter if you get the message from conservative Republicans or liberal Democrats -- the response is ALWAYS the same. All we ever get from US Steel is vague promises and corporate poor-mouthing; from the USW whining about "job killers" and "conspiracies" |

1 In 2005 two years before US Steel,s buying of the Canadian Stelco they were lobbying Congress for ''BUY AMERICAN''interesting because the so called need for this did,nt arise until the American made Global crisis of 2008 . That is interesting in itself since this is a huge conglomerate that does not run their vast Steelmaking enterprise on a day to day basis but on long term plans and long term Company goals. There are a variety of ''Foreign ''owners that run the Canadian Steel Industry today and throughout the Global Crisis not one of them found it necessary to totally shut down their Canadian facilities but opted for less harmful options for their workers and the Communities they are as ''THEY ''tell us when they want something PARTNERS. These other Foreign owners also thought it wise a show of ''good faith'' and important as good PARTNERS with Canada to live up to THEIR agreements with the Canadian Government . US Steel still has Lake Erie[Nanticoke]shut down . Now they like to explain it as a''LABOUR DISPUTE''but what they did after making a BILLION Dollars plus last year and settling with their American workers giving them raises and huge signing bonus,s offered the CANADIAN workers the most insulting contract they could full of with concessions and demands with Pensioners taking a beating no one could vote for. AH here comes the ''BUY AMERICAN''plan .While they are down after being offered garbage the CANADIAN orders are being produced in the GOOD OLE USA and shipped back to Canada. All the while the Stelco Hilton works COLD MILL is down because their work comes from , you got it LAKE ERIE which they have shut down due again to a garbage offer and HAMILTONS work is being done, guess where? The USA there,s BUY AMERICAN again. They can cry about not getting a fair trial all they want and they can tie up the case in litigation for as long as they want, this was still a calculated plan and US Steel are bully,s world wide . They werent harmed, they planned it |

1 BRAVO!!! I am beginning to think that foreigners like you are better Americans than those bums at US Steel and the USW. I suppose it is of little consolation to tell you that they do not treat their own people any better. The problem is the same as with any other repeat or habitual felon. Obviously it is not practical to jail a corporation -- but execution certain is an option! The US government can remove the import quotas, protective tarriffs and subsidies by executive order. Plants that are habitual offenders in violation of government regulations and industry standards can likewise be closed down also by executive order. This does not require any new legislation or adjudication. President Obama can get rid of these bums tommorrow -- he doesn't need "cap and trade" on this one! Close these old dumps and consign them to the wrecking ball. Throw the executives in jail. Put the bums on welfare and make them look for real jobs. This has been going on for thirty years; it's time to end it. |

Follow-up comment.....US Steel SHOULD get out of Canada -- and the United States. |
