Other Massey mines cited for ventilation problems

No lightening this time. I think Blankenship is on his way out. He is costing the company too much money. His arrogance has made him too many enemies.

Wouldn't that have been a balanced report if the writer had included other owners and cited whether or not they had ventilation problems.

Did Patriot Coal Federal Number 2 have ventilation problems? Did it have methane problems? Do you know anything about Patriot Federal No. 2?

Have you read this book? I haven't but it infers that mine ventilation is a pretty complex issue.

In order to save on costs, modern mining operations constantly strive toward optimizing the operating efficiency of their ventilation systems. Typical mine ventilation systems are represented by complex networks of hundreds of airways; the optimization of such complex 3-dimensional networks can only be studied using computer models. This paper presents an overview of mathematical models and techniques used in computer programming and of ventilation network models currently used in industry. The complex procedures used to develop, calibrate, refine and validate the ventilation network for a mine are also introduced. Limitations of ventilation computer modeling that must be taken into consideration when making engineering decisions and establishing multi-million dollar implementation programs for a mine ventilation system are discussed.

My cousin brought up something to me I had not thought about or knew about...She said the last mine accident was after the miners had been on vacation and this one after Easter...Were the miners working before Easter no spring break. I don't know I just keep thinking if they were not working maybe they cut the power off...I never heard miners getting spring break..School teachers. Someone that knows respond please.

You know Ralph, if he's not forced to resign or fired, then there is just no justice in this world. Everything cannot be laid at Blankenships door, I know, but the bulk of it can and until this greedy bully is taken out of the equation, no one will feel safe to talk, complain or open up about what's really going on in his operations. Its going to be interesting to see who wins this one, money or justice. Don't you agree?

Got that right. And no amount of defending Blankenship by informed citizen nor ANY other corporate employees for Massey will bring back the miners who were told to go into the dangerous mine or lose their jobs.

Blankenship needs to be facing negligent homicide charges.

There's always two sides to every issue & I belive it's fair to listen to more than huggers - I'm sorry, but your view is not exclusive.

When not in use, power circuits under-ground should be deenergized on idle days and idle shifts, except those used on transformers and recifiers.. please this is not a direct quote, correct me if i'm wrong.

He might as well resign, he's already been found guilty. The president even says so...along with the rest of the mining industry (although union mines will probably get an exemption)

Without knowing the facts, obama declares the coal industry and especially Massey "guilty" without bothering to get more information and putting any responsibility on MSHA, the federal agency responsible for overseeing operations and enforcing the laws at hand to close down mines if they posed dangers to miners.

I wouldn't worry about union mines, though. But if you work for a non-union mine - I'd be saving my money.

MSHA can't sit down there 24/7 and be expected to babysit Don B's mines.If your gonna own a mine ,you have to have the ability to know when to send them down and when not to.But instead massey always chooses to appeal their violations and keep them in litigation so that they don't even show up on reports that they are concluded to be a violation.It is not entirely MSHA's responsibility to always make sure a mine is running proerly.It has to begin and end with the people who own it.When you own a mine,you don't just own it and produce coal.You are responsible for ALL aspects of it,including making decisions between sending men in for production or trying to fix an ongoing problem.MSHA has several hundred different times they gave massey instructions on what to correct and instead massey argues them.Its not MSHA's job to correct it for them.

He once bragged in a company meeting(pep-rally also a do better talk) that he had people on his payroll in every state office from the Gov.office, state inspectors, evan the dmv. he may have been joking but he did not crack a smile after he said that. I believed him. I have not worked there in 4 years, this may have changed buy now. but I doubt it.

I think it's a shame though that folks who know very little about mining and how things operate, are jumping on the bandwagon to quickly hold a public hanging for Massey and Don Blankenship.

One thing I have noticed is that most of the posts have a few things in common, almost as it they all got an email with the talking points highlighted.

I'm reviewing a ton of comments this morning from a young "progressive" student at WVU. His comments are everywhere & his studies are listed as political science. Some of his favorites are Obama, Malcolm X, NPR, AFL-CIO, old political parties of Bull Nose and Rainbow Coalition (green party)

This is an example of "get out the message", because one commenter on his blog is lo and behold, the photographer involved in our local hugger's legal protest battle and temporary restraining order. If you read enough of these sites, you will see over and over again, the same people, the same organizations (RAN, Climate Zero, Coal River Mountain Watch etc) They are vey good at getting at "the message" or that should be "Their Message" because after some posts, the comments are closed. Wonder why?
