A growing number of American children are taking drugs for a wide range of chronic conditions related to childhood obesity, according to prescription data from three large organizations.

Parents need to start feeding thier kids the right way. If not they are plain and simply lazy parents. I mean the day any parent allows thier kids to be on any drug to combat thier laziness, is the day they should descide to have no more kids and have someone else take away thier rights as a parent.

I mean look at that mother that tried to sue Mc donaalds over her kids being over weight!!! She buys it and wants to blame them.

Parents need to buckle down and start being good parents. Not giving your kid everything they want isn't bad parenting, it's actually good. It sets boundaries as all kids should have.

Kids now adays are fat, disrespectful, and get bad grades because thier parents are too lazy to do the right thing. Meanwhile they take the easy way out by putting thier kids on drugs for weight and attitude issues, stand behind thier kids when they are disrepectful by not admitting thier kid is in the wrong and blaming all of the teachers for the kids not doing what they should be doing not to mention making sure thier kid does thier homework instead of playing video games.

Bad kids = bad parents.

Sorry - that won't work. These parents already know good food choices - they just do not make them. And their kids balloon up - usually like Mom and Dad - in no time at all.
The problem is not lack of education - it is lazy, uncaring, hillbilly parents.

Apparently the term "Unbiased" is not a goal of news reporting at ABJ. I'm getting tired of the bias in this newspaper.

The title of this article OUGHT to be,

"Doctors Lack Magic Wand to Create Responsible Parents" or

"Obese Parents Breed More Obese Eathing Habits into Their Children"

The pharmaceutical companies are hoping that we become a drug (prescription) dependent society. We are well on our way.

No, what we are well on our way toward is a POLITICIAN-DEPENDENT society--politicians who pander to the most IGNORANT and LAZY voters who will only put their hand out for something that requires NO WORK on their part.

Nobody holds a gun to a parent's head and forces them to pick up the prescription if they conclude the dr. ought to have a better approach.

Nobody forces a parent to make taxpayers pick up the tab for such prescriptions by putting the purchase on the Medicaid or Healthy Start card.

Nobody forces a parent to force fellow insurance premium payers to pick up such costs that across the board, raise everyone's premiums.

Nobody is stopping a parent from asking for other remedies, like EXERCISE!!.. that would mean "WORK"!!

Talk to public school H.S. physical education teachers and see what remedies they have if the students refuse to dress in shorts or tee shirt for class, because they want to SIT and do nothing.

P.E. teachers have told me that PARENTS will not back the teachers in getting their kids off their duffs and into the P.E. activities assigned. When the kids refuse to participate, the teachers can't do anything about it.

Talk to some family practice drs. or pediatricians and see how long they have cajoled and begged parents to model and instill better eating habits and exercise, before resorting to a pill that THE PARENT DEMANDS! Drs. often have no other remedy with child patients, because the parents won't do their job!!!

This all is due to nothing more than people wanting a free QUICK FIX, and doctors cannot go into homes and modify BEHAVIOR that took DECADES to form in the ignorant parents!!!

Groceries, gas for your car, gas for your home, electricity, water, rents or mortgages have never been exactly cheap and at this time in history, all the above are at all time highs.

Ohio minimum wage is $6.85 for non-tipped workers and $3.43 for tipped workers. With no insurance benefits or benefits with premiums so high there is no way they can be paid with such wages. These are the people who serve you in restaurants, serve you at Sheetz, make your little plastic containers, and so on. Two working parents would earn $2,192.00 gross pay in a 4-week month making non-tipped minimum wages.

Parents feed their children the cheapest foods out of necessity not by choice. Two loaves of bread, a pack of hot dog buns, hot dogs, bologna, eggs and PB & jelly will go a long way when a person is broke. These foods will also go a long way on calories, health issues and eating habits.

Clueless outsiders looking in could call any parent a “Bad parent” at some point in time. The old “Bad parents=bad children” is a bunch of crap. It is just another reason for individuals to look down their big noses at others. It may make you feel better about yourself to say such things about others, but it sure does not make you look any better.

States get a lot of money for children whom they remove from homes, for real reasons and “Just because” reasons. The Medicaid bills have been soaring from these removals because these children are not eligible for Medicaid when they are with their family, but are automatically eligible upon removal. These children are put into counseling, given drugs as if they were candy and a monthly payment. How much counseling and drugs do you suppose children would need who are removed from their loved ones because they were being fed the above items?

It is always amazing to me to see such judgmental people trying to look good. Guess what? You look like a clueless, pompous, self-righteous idiot.

Oh, those "evil doctors" .. "putting more kids on drugs". This story should be titled:

"Parents Willing to Spend More on Food for Obese children, but Nothing on Prescriptions .. Governments should give free prescriptions"

As long as somebody ELSE pays for these prescriptions, there's no incentive for the lazy parents to seek other less-costly solutions.

Plus, many of the obese children have obese parents who have modeled obesity as being "normal" all their lives. As long as the parents portray it as "normal", they're not going to change their kids' eating-loafing habits.

Sales of these medications for kids would not be increasing if Medicaid, Healthy Start and insurance companies and the parents themselves refused to pay for them.

BTW, getting a JOB that involves physical activity like walking and lifting and carrying things is a good way for teenagers to lose weight!

Trisha,
Sure, a pot roast, potatos, carrots, onions and peas would be cheaper. Wonder how much it actually costs for gas to run your oven for an hour or so? Wonder how far that dinner would stretch through the week?

Usually the poorer they come, the fatter they get. It is some wierd inversion of normality.

That's true and ya know why? The welfare system is giving way too much out to these people. I know a girl that had two kids and they were giving her over $600 on that direction card thing. Three people need that much? Hell I have a family of six and we spend about $00-$500 a month tops. And to boot she would sell $ off her card to get cash. Sickening.....

Parents need to stop being their kids pal and start being their parent. If you can't be a parent don't have kids.
